Jan 31, 2021 Sean and Kellie Ruane of Howland are announcing the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Michaela Nicole, to John James Graham, son of James and Claudia Graham of Cortland. Miss Ruane is a 2010 graduate of Howland High School and received a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology and audiology from Kent State University in 2014. She graduated from Cleveland State University in 2016 with a master’s degree in psychology, and a specialty in school psychology in 2017. Miss Ruane is employed as a school psychologist with the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Dr. Graham graduated valedictorian in 2006 from Lakeview High School. He graduated summa cum laude in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences with a minor in chemistry from the University of Akron. Jan 29, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN Mark J. Allen, born July 9, 1957, in Youngstown, took his final breath on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, in San Jose, Costa Rica, Central America, where he had resided for more than 20 years. At the time of his death, Mark was 63 years old. Mark spent his formative years in Warren. Born with a debilitating eye disease, Mark developed a passion for learning and loved to read. Mark was a former member of Howland United Methodist Church, where he belonged to the Boy Scouts of America. A top graduate in his 1976 Howland High School class, he was active in several clubs and activities, while in school. He went on to further his education, graduating from Ohio Northern University in 1980. Moving to Anaheim, Calif., Mark remained in the greater Los Angeles vicinity, for many years, working in various occupations until making the move to Costa Rica. Jan 24, 2021 HOWLAND Howland High School has recognized its students and teachers for their achievements, character and service to others. Now, the school is expanding those efforts to showcase positive community partnerships. “We feel this is not only a great opportunity to recognize local businesses, but also provide a platform to establish positive dialogue and educate our business community about our students and school environment,” high school Principal Joseph Simko said. Jan 24, 2021 HOWLAND John Thomas Knoske, of Howland, died unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, at his home. He was 65 years old. John was born in Warren on July 25, 1955, to William and Jean Vine Knoske, the fourth of seven children. After graduating from Howland High School, he attended the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he studied abstract painting. He later studied photography, and leaves behind a private but impressive portfolio of fine art photographs. With his older brothers, he founded the Three Brothers Bakery, which did business in Champion for 16 years. He went on to work at GM Lordstown on the assembly line, where he retired in 2018. ....

WARREN Eric Thompson’s comedy and magic show has taken him all over the world, including Cuba, Africa, China and across Latin America. “It’s a visual thing so the story doesn’t translate, but the act of magic does,” Thompson, 58, said. He sometimes works with a translator when performing abroad, but that complicated the timing of jokes. Still, the show has been performed in six languages and in more than two dozen nations on five continents. Thompson developed an interest in magic as a child in Howland. ....
