An investment fund managed by two Western Michigan University professors, and affiliated with the university s Haworth College of Business, has held a first close of $21 million for what is targeted to be a $50 million buyout fund, and it has also closed on its first acquisition, a manufacturing firm in the Chicago area.
Doug Lepisto, the managing partner of Kalamazoo-based Sleeping Giant Capital LLC, which manages the fund, said that under terms of the sale, details won t be disclosed until the CEO updates employees and customers. He said that he would like eventually to move the company to western Michigan and that a replacement CEO has been selected. ....

KALAMAZOO, Mich. Western Michigan University will grant more than 2,400 degrees to students during virtual commencement ceremonies
Saturday, May 1. On that date, visit the commencement website for a link to watch programs throughout the day for the University s seven colleges and WMUx. There will be 1,840 degrees awarded at the bachelor s level, nearly 560 at the master s level, two specialist degrees and 32 at the doctoral level.
All programs will be shown in Eastern Standard Time:

WMU students take third place in national advertising competition

KALAMAZOO, Mich. A team of advertising and promotion students from Western Michigan University s Haworth College of Business placed third in its division of the American Advertising Federation s National Student Advertising Competition. Led by
Dr. Karen M. Lancendorfer, professor of marketing and director of the advertising and promotion program, and assisted by
Greg Gerfen, instructor of marketing, the team competed in District 6, which is considered a mega-district due to the high number of collegiate teams competing for the chance to move forward to the finals. This is the fifth time in six years that a team from WMU has placed in the top three. ....

Change in budget and demand led to WMU major and minor removal

Western Michigan Universityâs Board of Trustees voted to remove a major and minor for the upcoming academic year during their Thursday, March 18 meeting. Satish Deshpande, dean of the Haworth College of Business, said the removal was in response to the marketplace.
âWhen you come into a program, you want a state of the art program where thereâs a demand in the marketplace,â Deshpande said. âItâs like selling products. You could be selling the best VCRs out there, but the market doesnât want VCRs anymore. Theyâve moved on to other things.â
The Health Informatics and Information Management (HiiM) major and the Automotive Systems minor were the programs removed for next year. Desphande said changes like these in programs are a healthy sign of an institution.Â ....
