NEW YORK (AP) T.J. Oshie had a hat trick, Vitek Vanecek made 19 saves and the Washington Capitals beat the depleted New York Rangers 4-2 in a fight-filled game Wednesday night.
Oshie beat Alexandar Georgiev 12 seconds into the middle period with a shot from the right circle with Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich in the penalty box.
Oshie scored again at 8:26 of the second again with Buchnevich penalized for a high-sticking major his 20th goal of the season.
Oshie, whose father died this week, completed his hat trick with an empty net goal at 18:20 of the third. ....

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Tomas Hertl had two goals and an assist in his 500th career NHL game and Erik Karlsson scored a go-ahead goal in the third period to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 comeback victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night.
Evander Kane added three assists and Josef Korenar made 30 saves as San Jose scored three unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0. It was an inspired effort two nights after the Sharks lost to Colorado and were eliminated from the playoff chase. ....

NEW YORK (AP) Daniel Sprong’s tiebreaking goal early in the third period propelled the Washington Capitals to a 6-3 victory over the fading New York Rangers, who were knocked out of playoff contention Monday night.
Nic Dowd, Conor Sheary, Garnet Hathaway, Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson also scored for the Capitals as they snapped a two-game skid. Vitek Vanecek made 23 saves to earn the 19th win of his rookie season.
“It’s a gutsy win,” Capitals defenseman John Carlson said after returning from a two-game absence. “These are important points, important games for us as a team. I think there were a lot of guys battling extra hard. It wasn’t the easiest of games the way it played out. I liked the way we stuck with it, overcame some adversity throughout different points of the game.” ....

Northwestern has decided to promote longtime deputy athletic director Mike Polisky replace Jim Phillips as athletic director, The Chicago Tribune reported on Sunday.
A Chicago-area native, Polisky joined Northwestern’s athletic department in 2010 after working for the Arena Football League’s Chicago Rush and American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves. He worked closely with Phillips in branding and strategy and helped develop the “Chicago’s Big Ten Team” marketing campaign.
Phillips had been Northwestern’s AD since 2008, leading the athletic department through a period of success in competition and growth in facilities before he was hired as ACC commissioner in December. During his tenure the Wildcats won Big Ten division titles in football; the men’s basketball team made its first NCAA tournament appearance; and women’s lacrosse won three national ....

Robert Rooba signs one-year contract with KHL team Severstal

Estonian hockey player Robert Rooba signed a one-year contract with Russian hockey club Severstal Cherepovets after his terrific season in the Finnish Liiga.
Last season, Severstal Cherepovets finished sixth in the regular season of the second strongest hockey league in the world but was bounced from the KHL play-offs in the first round.
Rooba had the best season of his career last season, scoring 30 goals for his Jyväskylä side in the Finnish top-flight Liiga. The Estonian finished second for the season in goals and told ERR after the season that he is awaiting interest from outside of Finland.
I will be honest, I have been in Finland for quite some time now but have never received such attention before. It has been a very positive surprise. Unfortunately, an Estonian hockey player is still an exotic sight, but also that I am not some young NHL hopeful, who people would have expected this out of.
