Hong Kong yesterday passed a new immigration law that includes powers to stop people entering or leaving the territory.
The bill sailed through the Hong Kong Legislative Council.
Rights advocates, lawyers and some business figures have sounded the alarm over provisions within the bill, including one that allows the territory’s immigration officials to bar people from boarding planes to and from Hong Kong.

Beijing, Apr 14 (Prensa Latina) Hong Kong s Legislative Council on Wednesday began the debates on the reforms to the electoral mechanism, approved by the National People s Congress of China (Parliament) to strengthen the implementation of the One country, two systems principle.
HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam expressed hope that the lawmakers will also support the project in late May to then give way to the organization of local elections, scheduled for December.

China has made significant electoral changes recently in Hong Kong.
ACT Party leader David Seymour has compared the Labour Government to the Chinese Communist Party in social media posts critical of local government moves in Tauranga.
Tauranga City Council commissioners - installed by the Government after significant governance issues were last year found at the Council - on Monday voted to establish a Māori ward.
