Smithfield Foods stops slaughtering pigs at U.S. hometown plant

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processor, will stop slaughtering pigs in America’s so-called ham capital, where the company was founded 85 years ago.
The end of slaughtering in Smithfield, Virginia, is the latest reconfiguration for the company’s namesake plant and follows a months-long internal review of its East Coast operations, Smithfield Foods said in a statement.
The company, owned by Hong Kong-listed WH Group Ltd, is shifting slaughtering to some of its 47 other U.S. facilities and spending $5 million to upgrade the Virginia plant to produce more packaged bacon, ham and other pork products, said Kiera Lombardo, chief administrative officer. ....

Smithfield Foods suspends federal campaign donations after U.S. Capitol riot

CHICAGO, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork processor, said on Monday it paused all federal campaign contributions until more facts are known about last week’s riot at the U.S. Capitol.
The Smithfield, Virginia-based company, which is owned by Hong Kong-listed WH Group Ltd, said it was “horrified by the recent violence at the U.S. Capitol.” (Reporting by Tom Polansek Editing by Chris Reese) ....

Smithfield Foods Shakes Up Leadership Team

Smithfield Foods gave its leadership team a brisk shake on Thursday, including naming a new chief supply chain officer.
The moves were announced by Smithfield president David Organ, who took the helm in November following the retirement of Kenneth Smith as president and CEO.
Headquartered in Smithfield, Va., Smithfield Foods is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based WH Group Ltd. It employs about 40,000 people in the U.S. and 14,000 in Europe, with such brands as Nathan’s Famous and Eckrich joining its namesake brand in its portfolio.
Scott Saunders was named chief supply chain officer, elevated from executive VP, U.S. supply chain, and president, fresh pork division. Prior to joining Smithfield, he served as chief financial officer at John Morrell Food Group, and began his career at Hormel Foods. ....
