Three years ago, at almost 30 years old, Melanie Kifer took a low-wage job in fast food.
A McDonald s in Johnstown paid the Mundys Corner mother of three a starting rate of $7.65 an hour 40 cents above minimum wage. She got a little more than the minimum because she had previous experience at the fast-food chain.
But that wasn t enough to help her keep a car on the road or food on the table for her kids. ....

A shallow labor pool is forcing one central Pennsylvania restaurant owner to take drastic measures.
Starting May 2, Yak N Yeti owner Tenzin Norbu said he’s temporarily closing his Himalayan restaurant at 213 N. Third St. in New Cumberland so he can follow through with plans to open a third restaurant in Lancaster. He also operates a Yak N Yeti in Carlisle, which will remain open. ....

AMBER, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT THESE INCIDENT AMBER: JEREMY, POLICE SOURCES CONFIRM THAT THREE MINORS WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER TWO SHOOTINGS THAT OCCURRED TODAY IN THE CITY THE FIRST HAPPENED HERE ALONG THE 2100 BLOCK OF BROOKWOOD STREET. AS YOU CAN SEE OFFICERS FROM BOTH HARRISBURG POLICE A CAPITOL POLICE WERE AT THE SCENE INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT RESIDENT TELL ME THIS HAPPENED AROUND 2:00 P.M. AND POLICE CONFIRM TWO JUVINILLES WER INVOLVED. BOTH WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. LATER IN THE DAY, ANOTHER SHOOTING HAPPENED A FEW MILES AWAY IN THE CITY. POLICE TELL ME THIS ONE WAS IN THE AREA OF 14TH AND MARKET STREETS. IT’S BEEN CONFIRMED BY POLICE THAT ANOTHER JUVINI ....

Court rejects appeal in police chase, shooting convictions

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) A state appeals court has rejected an appeal by a man serving a 28- to 60-year prison term on convictions including shooting at a police officer during a high-speed car chase in Pennsylvania six years ago. Now-26-year-old Shawn McCoy was convicted of robbery, assault on a law enforcement officer, illegal gun possession, criminal conspiracy and escape in the April 2015 chase following an armed robbery near a Harrisburg cafe. Jurors in Dauphin County acquitted him of attempted murder and aggravated assault. PennLive.com reports that a Superior Court panel on Monday rejected the defense contention that McCoy's lawyer should have asked a judge to instruct the jury on the testimony of witnesses with a record of crimes involving lying. The appeals court said such an instruction would have made no difference because jurors were well aware of the criminal history of the witness, and anyway other evidence linked McCoy to the crimes. ....

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) It is the case that Kevin Brobson cannot get out of his head: the National Rifle Association and gun owners couldn’t get Pennsylvania’s courts to consider their lawsuits challenging firearms restrictions in cities.
Brobson, now running for a seat on Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, is a key figure in an expanding fight over gun laws that is drawing out in the Legislature, the state’s highest court and the state’s biggest cities.
The fight over gun control is also featuring prominently in the three-way Republican primary race for the state Supreme Court seat, as Brobson and the two other candidates show off endorsements by gun-rights groups, attend the groups’ meetings or point to pro-gun decisions they made from the bench. ....
