As a law enforcement veteran and parent of school-age children, I can rest easy knowing they and their classmates can learn in a safe environment.
For this, I credit and thank, our faculty and administration, and local school resource officers, whose job it is to keep our kids safe.
However, such a safe school atmosphere may soon give way to political grandstanding, as those in public office look to create new bureaucracies and red tape for our schools, jeopardizing the safety of Connecticut’s children. ....

Smoky condition forces UConn to close building in Hartford

The main building at the University of Connecticut’s Hartford campus was closed for cleaning Monday after an equipment malfunction sent smoke throughout the building, a university spokesperson said.
A problem with the building’s air-handling system caused an internal belt to melt shortly after 2 a.m., filling the building with smoke and a burnt rubber smell, UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said in a news release.
No injuries were reported and there was no significant damage to the building, Reitz said, but the building was closed Monday for specialized cleaning to remove the smoky smell and clean soot from the walls. ....
