Wyoming's Pony Express Is Still Riding

The original Pony express riders may be long gone, but a group of Wyoming riders carry on the tradition to this day. Click this link to visit their website.
Stephanie Goulart is a member of the Pony Express riders, a group that has been ridding the old trail for 15 years, though doing it a bit slower than the original ridders.
“We have 25 riders,
” Goulart said before the ride.
“I think we’re expecting maybe six riders. We have collection boxes on all the post offices in Goshen and Platte County. The people will deposit their Valentines into those boxes and we collect the boxes and we stamp the letters with the stamp that says, ‘carried horseback.’ And then we gather here and throw mail on everybody and carry it from here to Hartville.” (Platt County Record Times) ....

Masks, other precautions needed even after COVID-19 vaccination

More than 34,000 Stark County residents have received at least the first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine.
But they shouldn t throw away those masks quite yet. Local health departments are encouraging vaccinated folks to continue practicing social distancing, washing their hands, wearing a mask, and avoiding crowds until more people have a chance to get the shot.
The vaccine is not a free pass, said Chris Cugini, communication specialist with the Stark County Health Department.
Even though the county s latest COVID-19 data is promising, this is still a critical time, he said.
We realize how difficult this has been for so many people, but we ve all made those sacrifices, and we don t want to ruin those sacrifices we ve made, he added. ....

Sommers represents the fourth generation to lead the company, which traces its origin to Sol Miller, a Hartville area farmer who in 1939 decided to open a livestock auction. After the auction was established, Miller s wife Soloma opened a lunch counter in the barn. They later allowed vendors to open a flea market.
Sol and Soloma s son, Howard R. Miller Sr., began managing the auction after his father died in 1958 and bought the business in 1962. He later bought a hardware store, opened a restaurant and tried other businesses. Some worked and some didn t.

Stark Health Dept. holds first COVID-19 vaccine clinic for seniors

PLAIN TWP. At least an hour before the first shot was even ready, folks began arriving at the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities headquarters eager to get the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Stark County Health Department scheduled the 420 doses each going to someone 80 years old or older for fixed times throughout the day. That didn t stop people from arriving early to secure a place in line.
Mary Powell, 87, of Jackson Township, was the first to go, rolling up the sleeves of her purple blouse and baring her shoulder for nurse Shannon Gahagan.
Powell expected the shot to hurt. She d watched others get the vaccine on TV and noticed how large the needle looked. But she didn t feel anything at all. ....
