Albatrossity – Spring 2021 in Flyover Country #1 Christopher Mathews – An eruption in Iceland BillinGlendaleCA – Elma – South American Fauna I bumped one of our regular submitters that I had scheduled for Tuesday (sorry Steve!) so we could have recent pics on the active volcano. They were submitted just a day or two ago, but it’s very timely, hence being moved to the front of the line. Also, is anyone else planning to send in Paris pics? Albatrossity I have several more sets of pics from Brazil, and I am slowly working to get those selected and organized for future On The Road submissions. But right now winter has just moved out and made room for spring, birds are moving, flowers are popping, and it just seems like time for the 2021 version of Spring in Flyover Country. Brazil can wait! ....
Albatrossity Because I take way too many pictures of hawks, I sometimes get contacted by hawk researchers to get more details about some of the bird images I post on FaceBook or on eBird. This is a great way for me to learn more about the birds and the folks who study them. One of those contacts led to a small adventure in late February, when I had the privilege of accompanying Bryce Robinson and Luke Decicco, of the Red-tailed Hawk Project, on an expedition to trap, tag, and perhaps put transmitters on some of our winter-resident dark hawks. Bryce is a graduate student at Cornell, and Luke is a graduate student at the University of Kansas, just down the river from my town of Manhattan KS. They are interested, like lots of others, in the multitude of plumage variations in Red-tailed Hawks, and are working to figure out the summer breeding locations for some of the dark redtails who winter here on the Great Plains. You can read more about the project here. ....
Manhattan KSJanuary 8, 2021 Many opportunities for seeing winter birds in Flyover Country or elsewhere are available if you have a bird feeder, and even more are available if you have water for them to drink or bathe in. Cedar Waxwings ( Bombycilla cedrorum) have been scarce so far here this winter (an untimely freeze last spring hit the cedar fruits just as they were starting to develop). But a small flock paid a visit one afternoon, and I got a photo through the kitchen window. Quivira NWRJanuary 4, 2021 Wildlife refuges like Quivira NWR in central KS may not be as birdy in the winter as they are in the spring and fall, but they are also not as busy. So you can take your time and wait for the birds to adjust to your presence without another vehicle coming up behind you. I watched and waited while this young Great Blue Heron ( ....
red-tailed hawk Sat Nov 29 2014 at 13:50:16 Buteo jamaicensis, also colloquially called chickenhawk despite its preference for mammalian prey over domestic fowl, is the most widespread, populous, and versatile member of Falconiformes in the United States. The red-tail s range extends well into Canada and Alaska, Panama and the West Indies, and it succeeds similarly well in high and low altitude biomes, humid and arid biomes, urban zones and forests and open plains. Only the peregrine falcon can boast residence in more discrete types of habitat than the red-tail, and the peregrine certainly does not have the same population numbers or number of subspecies, colour morphs, and taxonomically significant variations. Peregrines also tend to follow a far more restricted diet, preying chiefly on pigeons and small waterfowl. If there is a rodent, rabbit, non-venomous reptile, road-killed raccoon, or complacent pigeon anywhere in the States, within a mile there is a red-tailed hawk ....
