Mass. Bill Spurred By Harvard Alum Would Mandate Fire Safety Training at All Schools, Universities | News

A bill in the Massachusetts State Legislature spearheaded by a Harvard alum would require all students enrolled in the state’s schools and colleges — including Harvard — to complete fire safety training.
The bill — which would mandate a fire safety curriculum and proficiency assessment to gauge student mastery of the material — was introduced in February by State Representative Marjorie C. Decker and State Senator Sal N. DiDomenico in their respective chambers, both Democrats who represent Harvard’s district. As of March 29, the bill has been referred to the committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security for further consideration.
The legislation originated in advocacy by Lauren K. Gibbs ’77, who lost her daughter Margalit “Mara” Gibbs, a student at Reed College in Portland, Ore., in an off-campus fire in February 2017. The fire started in an apartment Mara Gibbs shared with two roommates and after being awakened by the heat a ....

Harvard Advises Affiliates to Stop Use of Hand Sanitizers Containing Benzene | News

Harvard Environmental Health and Safety, a department of Campus Services, advised University affiliates to suspend use of hand sanitizers containing the human carcinogen benzene, including one brand purchased by Harvard, in a Monday email.
The guidance comes after pharmaceutical testing company Valisure published a March 24 citizen petition identifying brands of hand sanitizer that it found contain benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer in humans.
Though temporary U.S. Food and Drug Administration policies during the Covid-19 pandemic currently permit the concentration of up to two parts per million of benzene in hand sanitizer products, HEHS Managing Director William VanSchalkwyk issued a notice in the email to Harvard affiliates to forgo use of hand sanitizers containing any detectable amount of benzene based on Valisure’s data. ....

Harvard University Dining Services to Close Four Facilities, Lay Off Employees | News

Harvard will permanently close four University Dining Services facilities and lay off the employees at each location, according to Harvard Campus Services spokesperson Michael D. Conner.
The four operations impacted include the Heights restaurant in Smith Campus Center, CGIS Café in the Center for Government and International Studies, the Observatory Cart, and the Culinary Support Group kitchen. The CSG kitchen serves as the central kitchen for HUDS, providing the various soups, sauces, salads, and pastas used across all of Harvard’s dining halls.
The announcement entails the layoff of 17 workers at the CSG kitchen, a point of contention for many HUDS workers, some of whom are already facing potential layoffs after Executive Vice President Katherine N. Lapp announced last month that the University would stop compensating contracted workers whose work had been idled by the pandemic. ....
