Sipekne'katik to receive $2.7M for 20 affordable housing units

Ottawa has announced $2.73 million to build affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness in one of the largest Mi kmaw communities in Nova Scotia.
The 20-unit project in the Sipekne katik First Nation will be constructed through the federal rapid housing initiative, with half of the units targeted to women and children.

Scotiabank Centre renovations transform facility's appearance

According to Halifax Mayor Mike Savage, Scotiabank Centre has been a catalyst for downtown growth and development over the 43 years since it first opened.
A lot of people didn’t think it made sense to build the stadium downtown, said Savage. It was the right place to have it.
Savage also said Scotiabank Centre has also played a defining role in downtown business and tourism.
In recent years, the formerly named Halifax Metro Centre has benefitted from its partnership with Scotiabank, which has helped re-define the facility and pave the way for much needed and on-going upgrades and renovations. ....

As hardworking taxpayers tightened their belts last year to cope with pay cuts and job losses, Toronto’s municipal employees were busy cashing in bigger paycheques with your tax dollars.
The City of Toronto currently employs 34,603 workers. Last year, only 104 of them didn’t get a raise. That means over 99.6% of Toronto municipal employees got a pay hike.

Small business owners fear for business survival

Café owner Ian Macleod has a message for the Premier of Nova Scotia.
Send the help we really need, said Macleod, who has been in business for 18 months and has struggled through pandemic restrictions that have crushed his bottom line.
Each wave has made things a little bit worse, said Macleod.
Macleod s cafe has received government financial assistance.
I got the 75 per cent rent subsidy, said Macleod. So I was on the hook for 25, the landlord was on the hook for 25, and the government did 50.
Macleod has also twice received government aid, which covered 15 percent of his February sales, which he pointed out was his slowest month. ....
