While on the set of “In the Heights,” screenwriter Quiara Alegría Hudes wanted to make sure every detail about every character was right, down to their shoes.
For the scenes set at the salon owned by Daniela (Daphne Rubin-Vega), some of the movie’s executives wanted hypersexualized salon workers, asking if the production team could find a “Latina bombshell” — perpetuating “this very limited version of what Latino beauty looks like,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright recalled in an interview. ....

The organization behind the annual Golden Globes Awards show is hiring a chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer to address a public relations crisis stemming from the revelation that the group has no black people in its voting membership.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also said it would clean up some of its business practices by putting restrictions on gifts members receive from studios. In the past, members regularly accepted overseas junket trips and other studio freebies that were commonly viewed within the industry as bribes for votes. ....

LOS ANGELES, April 22, 2021 (BSS/AFP) – Actors of color are favorites in each category, and two female directors are nominated for the first time this year’s Oscars could set new benchmarks for diversity, thanks to long-brewing industry changes as well as Covid-19’s transformation of Hollywood, experts say.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has drastically reformed its membership in recent years, admitting large batches of new Oscars voters each year who better reflect society’s diversity, after much criticism for its mainly white, male base.
“I think that this Oscars will be forever remembered as the one where changes in the voting body made six years ago in the wake of #OscarsSoWhite has delivered on a promise by the Academy to reform itself,” Black US actor Dwayne Barnes (“Menace II Society”) wrote in a column for industry site Deadline. ....
