Mazda Motor Corp. said Thursday its global production will be cut by 7,000 vehicles in February from its initial plan, as it will not be able to procure enough chips for key safety and environmental technology amid a global shortage.
The automaker will review its production plan for the fiscal year through March 2021 to factor in the impact of the chip supply crunch, Mazda chief executive Akira Marumoto said at a news conference on its latest earnings report. ....

Indictment of ex-minister Takamori Yoshikawa puts Suga in tight spot

Osaka – Former agriculture minister Takamori Yoshikawa was indicted Friday by prosecutors without arrest for alleged bribery charges, after receiving ¥5 million from the former president of Akita Foods, a Hiroshima Prefecture-based egg producer, over several years.
Yoshikawa, 70, resigned as a Lower House member in late December over the scandal, citing health reasons, and has also left the Liberal Democratic Party.
The controversy is a political blow for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s government, and is likely to be the subject of inquiries by opposition parties when the Diet convenes on Monday.

Tokyo prosecutors will soon indict a former agriculture minister on a bribery charge over 5 million yen ($48,000) he received from a major egg producing company, sources said.
Takamori Yoshikawa, 70, will be indicted without arrest or being taken into custody because he underwent a heart operation at the end of 2020 and has since been in a hospital, the sources said.
Prosecutors suspect Yoshikawa received a total 18 million yen over the past six years from a former top executive of Akita Foods Co., a Hiroshima Prefecture-based egg producer. ....
