Mark Istanbul Convention’s 10th Anniversary with Action
(Berlin) – Council of Europe member states should reinforce efforts to combat violence against women by swiftly ratifying and carrying out a landmark regional convention on women’s rights, Human Rights Watch said today.
Human Rights Watch released two videos today that explain the convention and highlight its importance. Governments should take urgent steps to counter misinformation about the convention and to fight dangerous myths and discriminatory stereotypes that undermine work to curb violence against women.

Ten years after of the landmark declaration of the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention on women’s rights, a significant number of countries in Central and Eastern Europe have yet to ratify the treaty. Others are considering pulling out.
Council of Europe member states should reinforce efforts to combat violence against women by swiftly ratifying and carrying out a landmark regional convention on women’s rights, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Human Rights Watch (HRW) says Council of Europe member states should reinforce efforts to combat violence against women by quickly ratifying and implementing a regional treaty on women’s rights that the group said has faced “unprecedented backlash” in a number of countries.
HRW made the call in a statement on May 10, the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, known as the Istanbul Convention. ....

ΑΤΗΕΝS Proposed legislation in Greece to give divorced parents an equal say in child-raising didn t take into consideration how it could jeopardize women and children and victims of domestic violence, Human Rights Watch complained.
The measure was put forth by the ruling New Democracy which controls Parliament, where it will likely be voted upon this month over the warnings fro the activists who said it could lead to lengthy court battles for exceptions. ....

(Athens) – A bill to amend child custody provisions in Greece’s civil code disregards risks for domestic violence victims that would put women and children in jeopardy, Human Rights Watch said today.
The bill, Reforms regarding parent-child relations and other family law issues,” is expected to be introduced in parliament in early May 2021. It would redefine the “best interests of the child” in Greek law and presume equal shared custody of children in cases of separation or divorce. Any exceptions, including in cases of domestic violence, would require a potentially lengthy court process. The proposed changes contravene international ....
