Beloved Blacksburg cancer doctor reflects on 35 years of advances in care

âYou are not going to die.â
Jana Cranwell has a vivid memory of the day she heard those words.
âI can still hear his voice,â she said of Dr. Harry McCoy, the Blacksburg oncologist who delivered the good news. âI can see his face.â
It was 2012 and Cranwell had just had surgery for breast cancer when she found McCoy.
âOne thing I had known about him before I talked to him was that he told the truth,â Cranwell said. âIf you were dying in two weeks, he would tell you.â
She first heard of McCoy when he treated her husbandâs aunt, who died of terminal cancer. It was McCoy who told her she had only weeks to live. ....

Changing diet and exercise can make chemotherapy more effective in youth with leukemia
Overweight children and adolescents receiving chemotherapy for treatment of leukemia are less successful battling the disease compared to their lean peers. Now, research conducted at the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute at Children s Hospital Los Angeles indicates that modest changes in diet and exercise can greatly increase survival in youth treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common childhood cancer.
To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that by limiting calories and increasing exercise we can make chemotherapy more effective in eliminating leukemia cells within the first month of therapy, decreasing the chances of disease relapse in children and adolescents. ....

Researchers Find Ribosome Assembly Essential for Stem Cell Regeneration
Researchers at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have identified genes responsible for hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) regeneration via the assembly of the ribosome, the protein factories in cells that translate mRNA sequences into amino acid sequences. The findings, which were published in Cell Stem Cell, highlight the importance of proper ribosome assembly in stem cell regeneration and identify possible targets for future therapies for ribosomopathies, childhood disorders that lead to bone marrow failure (BMF).
