Getting vaccinated can help younger Hoosiers resume normalcy, protect others

INDIANAPOLIS â Why should young people, who are at low risk themselves of getting seriously ill or dying of COVID-19, get vaccinated?
Ask health officials and theyâll say itâs not just about protecting themselves from illness, but itâs a step toward reclaiming their pre-pandemic lifestyle and a way to protect their loved ones, both the very young and the very old.
Ask the Millennials and Gen Zâers who are already getting the vaccine themselves and, well, theyâll tell you pretty much the same thing.
âWe know so many people who are very thankful and excited to protect themselves and others. Few negative or undecided persons. The sooner we are all protected, the sooner get back to normal,â said Grace Caswell, an under-40 who works with the local St. Martinâs Healthcare organization. She was fully vaccinated earlier this year but her husband recently signed up for his first shot, too. ....

COVID-19 cases increase as vaccine eligibility opens

INDIANAPOLIS – Even as COVID-19 vaccine eligibility opened up to all Hoosiers age 16 and older, Kris Box, the state health commissioner, cautioned that COVID-19 cases continued to spread and Hoosiers still need to wear masks and socially distance.
“Unfortunately, right now the (COVID-19) variants are picking up steam,” Box said. “Our proximity to Michigan, which is one of the stop states for the B.1.1.7 (United Kingdom) variant, is also a concern.”
Michigan has the second-highest reported number of B.1.1.7 cases in the country behind Florida, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cases in Michigan rose most among the younger populations, Box said, indicating the need for younger residents to get vaccinated to avoid a similar jump in case numbers. Indiana’s case numbers of started to slightly increase again even as 21% of Indiana’s population is fully vaccinated. ....

Hoosiers Age 16 and Older Eligible for Covid-19 Vaccine

INDIANAPOLIS (March 31, 2021) â Hoosiers ages 16 and older are now eligible to sign up for a free COVID-19 vaccine, the Indiana Department of Health announced today. The expansion makes more than 1.3 million additional individuals eligible for vaccine.
âWith this expansion in age group, more than 5.4 million Hoosiers are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine,â said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG. âI encourage everyone who is eligible to sign up for an appointment so that we can take the next step toward putting this pandemic behind us.â
With todayâs expansion, the state has now made COVID-19 vaccines available to every Hoosier for whom the vaccine is currently authorized. The stateâs focus will remain on providing equitable access to vaccine and providing current and accurate information so that Hoosiers can be informed about their options. ....
