The International Space Station as it plies its rarefied orbit
Outer space is rapidly becoming Outer Space, Inc., as the rise of private launch providers is making it increasingly easy to turn a buck in an industry that was once exclusively a not-for-profit government operation. The commercialization of low-Earth orbit took a big step forward yesterday, with NASA’s announcement that the space agency has inked a deal with Houston-based Axiom Space, in which Axiom will fly the first purely commercial crew to the International Space Station (ISS) and pay NASA handsomely for the privilege. ....

NASA and Houston-based Axiom Space have signed a mission order setting the stage for four civilians to visit the International Space Station early next year, the first fully commercial flight to the orbiting lab complex, agency managers said Monday.
Axiom s AX-1 mission and an upcoming charity-driven flight to low-Earth orbit, both aboard SpaceX Crew Dragon capsules, represent a renaissance in U.S. human spaceflight, said Phil McAlister, NASA s director of commercial spaceflight development.
I think that s the perfect word for what we re experiencing, he said of the growing commercial space market, which includes the anticipated certification of Boeing s CST-100 Starliner and upcoming sub-orbital flights by Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic. This is a real inflection point, I think, with human spac ....

Larry Connor preps for dive to depths of Mariana Trench

Cincinnati Enquirer
CINCINNATI  With only nine months left until he pilots a history making mission to space, real estate investor and philanthropist Larry Connor has another groundbreaking piece of exploration to take care of. He is scheduled to make two dives to the deepest part of the ocean at more than 35,000 feet.
Connor said he plans to explore both the Challenger Deep and the Sirena Deep in the Mariana Trench, located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam, he told the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network.
The hadal zone, or the area of the ocean below 20,000 feet, is considered the last frontier of exploration on Earth. “Hadal exploration” is exploration at depths beneath 20,000 feet, or 6,000 meters.  ....
