Letters: Shame on Alister Jack for stirring up needless conflict

ALLAN Thompson (Letters, July 2) complains that the Scottish Government is fabricating grievances over the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty which the UK already signed up to in the 1990s. May I remind Mr Thompson that the Scottish bill incorporating this into domestic law in Scotland was passed unanimously in the Scottish Parliament in March, where its passage proved uncontentious.
Far from the SNP-led Scottish Government fabricating grievances, the boot is I’m afraid firmly on the other foot: it is the Scotland Office under Alister Jack which is unnecessarily fomenting conflict between the UK and the Scottish governments. Mr Jack is attempting to curtail the rights of the Scottish Parliament to legislate on child welfare in Scotland. We must ask ourselves why the UK Government would wish to challenge legislation in Scotland affecting children’s UN rights when it has already signed up to the treaty? Unless it wishes to dilute the UN treaty rights of S ....

Letters: We deserve so much better than an SNP that is running on empty

FULL marks to Tom Gordon for rightly describing the SNP’s latest power-grab claim as “lazy garbage,” which it certainly is ( The SNP’s latest ‘power grab’ claim is lazy garbage , The Herald, July 1). Moreover, this latest manifestation of bleating and moaning by the Scottish Government is symptomatic of a wider malaise.
As your correspondent John McCallum (Letters, June 30) helpfully points out, the SNP is not sustained in power at Holyrood by virtue of its efficiency, efficacy, economy or equity (the four E s of public policy evaluation) but by the promise of the Jam Tomorrow of independence. Likewise, the SNP’s dominance of Westminster seats was founded on promises to “Stop Brexit” and to Lock Johnson Out of No 10”. Both of which were impossible in the first place and indeed have proven to be cynical vote-grabbing gimmicks. ....

Letters: If the Flamingo Land plans for Loch Lomond fail again, where will the jobs come from?

YOU report today that Green MSP Ross Greer objects to the revamped plans from the Flamingo Land company to build a leisure facility on a brownfield site in Balloch ( Flamingo Land flies in with new tourist resort for Loch Lomond , The Herald, June 3).
Mr Greer objected to the previous application by the company, which would have both created local jobs and generated income for the area and warns the applicant that the 55,000 people who objected the last time haven’t gone away.
In the quotes you attribute to him his language comes across as entrenched and somewhat passive-aggressive. It creates the impression that there is little room for manoeuvre in his stance on this issue. ....
