A new fund established at the Community Foundation of Portage & District in memory of Geno Romanow, long time Equipment Manager of the Portage Terriers, is being announced today to mark the 1-year anniversary of his passing on May 8th. And although not a lot of hockey has
been played over the past year due to the pandemic, the loss of Geno Romanow is still felt deeply by many.
Geno Romanow fell in love with hockey and the Portage Terriers during the 1973/74 Centennial Cup Championship season. The following year, he joined the Portage Terriers Junior A Board and the Junior B Terriers, where he quickly picked up the skills of being an equipment manager. Geno could never remember exactly what year he moved up to the Junior A’s. For 40+ seasons he crafted his skill of skate sharpening, knowledge of all hockey equipment and became a friend to every ....

In early 2020, Honour 150, presented by Canada Life, invited Manitobans to recognize 150 people from across the province who give back to the community and enrich the places in which we live, work, play, and come together in unity and four outstanding citizens from Portage la Prairie made the cut as Charlie Clifford, Ferne Green, Yvette Cuthbert and Auna Marie Brown.

Charlie Clifford’s relatives, teachers, and councillors in his youth inspired him to give back to Portage La Prairie, despite experiencing many hardships.
Clifford is a retired teacher and principal who has devoted himself tirelessly to advocating for and improving the health, safety, and well-being of his community through the Canadian Mental Health Association, the First Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity, Sunset Palliative Care, and many other organizations. ....

Portage Croppers answer call for cards

It started as a challenge to Winnipeggers to create a Christmas card for someone they don’t know, and a helpful group of Portagers took it up the call for their region.
The cards were to be distributed to people in the hospital over the holidays through the Alzheimer Society after the organization put the challenge out to all the Alzheimer Society Manitoba staff to do the same.

“After talking with Chris Dumont, the Executive Director of the Herman Prior Activity Centre, where the local Alzheimer Society has recently located to, she said that a Scrapbooking Group that she belongs to, called Cross Country Croppers here in Portage la Prairie, would love to be a part of this,” said Donna Frost, Regional Coordinator ASM. ....
