Descendant of H.H. Holmes Reveals What He Found at Serial Killer's Gravesite in Delaware County

This is where Mudgett and others say the mystery begins.
According to newspaper accounts, Holmes was marched to the gallows at Moyamensing Prison where he was hanged. The prison was located on 1400 South 10th Street in Philadelphia before it closed in 1963 and was demolished in 1968. Holmes’ body was eventually interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon. Holmes requested his casket be encased in concrete so no one would steal his body. However, an 1898 newspaper article sparked the conspiracy theory that Holmes somehow escaped death at Moyamensing and ended up in South America.
Fast-forward to 2017 with Mudgett standing in what many believe to be the grave of his murderous relative. Descendants of Holmes were granted permission by a Delaware County judge to exhume the remains.

Survivor.
And, of course, the first dude to murder a bunch of people. That dude happened to be New Hampshire-born, Herman Webster Mudgett who later changed his name to H. H. Holmes.
New Hampshire Life
Holmes was born in Gilmanton in 1861 and started out a mostly normal New Hampshire life. Well, besides the eerie foreshadowing of future endeavors when, as a child, Holmes harmed animals and chalked it up to his interest in pursuing medicine and practicing on the creatures according to Biography.com

How serial killer H.H. Holmes was executed - Chicago Sun-Times

AP
As published in the Chicago Daily News, sister publication of the Chicago Sun-Times:
No one can say for certain just how many people Chicago-based serial killer H.H. Holmes murdered. On the day of his execution on May 7, 1896, in Philadelphia, Holmes had already confessed to 27 murders, though as Erik Larson, author of “The Devil in the White City,” concluded: “Exactly how many people he killed will never be known.”
The Chicago Daily News published an account of the killer’s death after he was sentenced to hang for the murder of his associate and co-conspirator Benjamin Pitezel.
Holmes, an alias for Herman Webster Mudgett, arrived in Chicago in 1885 and took an interest in a drugstore at 63rd and Wallace, Larson wrote. After conning the owner out of the property, he built a three-story building on the land across from the drugstore with retail space on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors. Later dubbed the “murder castle,” the building had trapdoors, secret rooms and a kiln — really a crematorium — in the basement.
