Factors of flight and repatriation: The example of Greek Brain Drainers living in the United Kingdom

During the Greek Crisis a new wave of migration took place, related to young Greek scientists and professionals (Brain drainers). This study utilizes the qualitative collection and analysis of 31 narrative interviews with Greek Brain Drainers living and working in the United Kingdom, in an effort to examine, understand and interpret the factors that contribute to both their escape and their return home.
The present study argues that both the factors that contribute to the flight and the intention (or even hesitation) to return home, are related to: a) macro-factors related to the socio-political-economic situation of Greece and b) cultural factors (related to prevailing Greek mentalities beyond the period or the influence of the Greek Crisis). ....

US, Greek Scientists Say Santorini Volcano Could Erupt Again

ATHENS American and Greek scientists working together to create a geomorphologic map for the tourist hot spot of Santorini to “enhance hazard assessments” on the southeastern Aegean island said it’s “at high risk for volcanically- and seismically-induced hazards.”
The scientists, whose paper on the subject was published in the Journal of Maps on March 2, applied planetary geologic mapping methods to submarine data to create an onshore-offshore geomorphologic map of the Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo Volcanic Group, said Kathimerini.
“Submarine geomorphologic maps are used to provide geologic context and spatial information on landforms and related geo-hazards for risk management,” their abstract said. ....

Like the rest of the world, the Greek economy has entered into another deep economic recession in 2020. While the economy appeared to be on a modest recovery from its ‘great depression’ of 2010-2016, it was hit by a new major international economic shock due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Greece appears to have experienced a very deep recession in 2020 and even under optimistic assumptions, a full recovery will take some time beyond 2021.
