The Day - New Norwich calendar marks dozens of key dates for cultures around the world - News from southeastern Connecticut


Norwich  Norwich teachers wondering why a certain student isn’t in school on Feb. 12 or April 14 now can consult a special calendar posted on the school system website to see if there’s an important national or religious holiday on that date important to the student’s family.
It’s not the official school holiday or vacation calendar, but Norwich school officials and Global City Norwich have teamed up to create a cultural calendar denoting dozens of significant events to people of different cultures and nationalities worldwide.
The 2021 cultural calendar starts with Haitian Independence Day on Jan. 1 and runs through Kwanzaa Dec. 26 through Jan. 2. So far, 49 dates are listed, including 21 independence days  five Central American nations share Sept. 15 as their independence days. ....

Brooklyn community comes together in a different way for Haitian Independence Day

Jan. 1 wasn t just the start to 2021 - it s also Haitian Independence Day, and Brooklyn residents gathered for a celebratory Mass.
The annual Feast Day celebration traditionally means a packed church, as each parish in the Brooklyn Diocese joins together to reflect. But this year, in-person attendance was limited.
Father Hilaire Belizaire says each parish ended up sending to representatives to the Mass.
And while the celebration couldn t bring everyone together physically, they still felt connected.
It is not only our Independence Day, it is our Thanksgiving Day, we remember the past, we remember our ancestors, we remember the history, we remember our roots, where we come from, says Monsieur Pierre-André Pierre. ....

For Haitians, soup joumou is synonymous with freedom. The story goes that during French colonial rule of Haiti, enslaved Africans were forced by their oppressors to cultivate squash for this dish but were not allowed to eat it. When Haitians won their independence on Jan. 1, 1804, they ate soup joumou to celebrate. The formula varies slightly from family to family, but usually includes calabaza squash, beef marinated in a bright epis seasoning of onions, peppers and herbs, an assortment of other vegetables and pasta. This classic version is adapted from “Let’s Speak Haitian Food: Stories from the Haitian Diaspora on Cuisine, Community and Culture” by Cindy Similien, a Haitian-American author and community advocate. The inclusion of both vermicelli and homemade dumplings adds a springy bite and thickens the brot ....

That holidays are marked by food is a (very delicious) given. But every culture, every community, every family has its own traditional dishes and for Bianca Sanon, the Miami-based sommelier curating this month’s Eater Wine Club wines, that beloved holiday dish is soup joumou.
Soup joumou is a pumpkin-based soup typically eaten to mark Haitian Independence Day, when Haiti gained its independence from French colonial rule, which happens to be January 1. “The story I was told as a child is that we eat pumpkin soup because it was the soup that only the slave masters were allowed to eat, and enslaved people were forbidden to eat it,” says Sanon, who grew up in South Florida in a Haitian-American family. “So, to celebrate independence, the first meal the freed Haitians ate was this soup.” ....
