Community garden project helping Columbus children stay away from violence

COLUMBUS (WCMH) Over at the Highland Youth Garden, teenagers are taught not only how to grow plants and food, but also to build relationships with those around them.
The summer-long initiative, funded by the city of Columbus, aims to stop violent crime involving young people.
“And we’re also providing them real training in gardening, but also food justice issues, career exploration, job skill,” said Shelly Casto, executive director for the Highland Youth Garden.
These lessons are already having a positive impact on teens.
Like 14-year-old Katlyn Robinson, who said at her age, being able to give back to her community, is something she feels she can be proud of. ....

A visit to Debra Knapke’s Northwest Columbus garden is always filled with valuable lessons. Just ask her former Columbus State University horticulture students now in prime green jobs throughout the region. 
Jared Hughes, owner of Groovy Plants Ranch in Marengo, recalls a class with Knapke when he naively took home a patch of her prickly pear cactus for his new succulent business. He ended up finding cacti hairs all over the interior of his new truck for days after that. Charlie Richardson, the lead gardener at Highland Youth Garden in the Hilltop, remembers class field trips to Knapke’s garden that helped bring the plants’ scientific names to life.  ....

Debate over 'CPD' chopper flight takes some attention from youth grants


Columbus Public Safety Director Ned Pettus said Monday that he has instructed interim Police Chief Mike Woods to ensure that a police helicopter pilot who spelled out CPD in an early-morning Saturday flight over a residential area on the East Side is appropriately addressed.
I will ensure that the results of his review are made available to both city council and the mayor s office, and will include an outline of any corrective actions undertaken, Pettus told Columbus City Council during a meeting Monday evening.
Commander Robert Sagle, who oversees the helicopter unit, apologized for the time and attention this has caused when the city has much more important things to focus on. ....
