Panera Bread scheduled to open next month in Wilkes-Barre Twp.

The long-awaited Panera Bread in Wilkes-Barre Twp. Commons is scheduled to open June 2, Wilkes-Barre Twp. Zoning Officer Tom Zedolik said Tuesday.
Zedolik completed a final inspection and issued a certificate of occupancy Tuesday for the stand-alone Panera Bread with a drive-thru.
A sign in front of the new Panera Bread says âopening soon, hiring now.â It is opening nearly three years after a tornado destroyed the restaurant and other businesses in the strip mall.
Zedolik said he spoke with the manager and he told him they have hired enough people to open but they continue to do interviews.
Job openings were posted online for a team manager, salad and sandwich maker, overnight baker and cashiers. ....

Are you familiar with how and when our township was formed? I am taking the opportunity to brief my township readers on some facts on how Wilkes-Barre Twp. got its name and when it was formed.
The township was one of the original townships, named in honor of John Wilkes and Isaac BarrÃ©, two British Parliament members who supported colonial America and fought for our freedom while they served in the British Parliament.
The township was formed in 1774 when it stretched from the Susquehanna River to the Lehigh River and included present day Wilkes-Barre City, Laurel Run Borough, Bear Creek Twp. and Buck Twp. In 1849, Moses Tammany departed from Ireland and upon his arrival in our area, he acquired most of the land that is now Wilkes-Barre Twp. for $12,000. Coal companies purchased many parcels of this land that contained the finest and purest anthracite coal deposits in the world. ....

Crash on I-81 injures four

Four people were sent to a local hospital after a crash on Interstate 81 near Wilkes-Barre.

Troopers say two cars and a tractor-trailer collided around 6 p.m. on Sunday in the southbound lanes of I-81, near the Highland Park Boulevard exit in Wilkes-Barre Township.
The cars ended up in the median.
Each car had two people inside.
All four people were taken to a nearby hospital but there is no word on the extent of their injuries.
Traffic was backed up for about a mile while crews cleaned up the wreck.
State police are still investigating the crash. ....
