Today In Johnson City History: May 6


May 6, 1840: The Whig reported on a recent death in the community. “Died at the residence of her Mother (sic), Mrs. Aiken, of Washington co. (sic) Tenn., on Sunday morning (indecipherable), Mrs. Eliza J. Carter, in her 42nd year of age.”
The Whig was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1840.
May 6, 1886: The Comet reported, “Messrs. Crandall & Shuler have arrived in Johnson City and have opened the Bank of Johnson City, in the west room under Jobe’s Hall. A fire-proof (sic) vault is being erected and inside of it will be placed a splendid Hall’s burglar proof steel safe, with a time lock. The gentlemen who will conduct the banking business came to this community with the highest recommendations. They have plenty of capital and are now ready for business. The bank will be a great convenience to Johnson City and will no doubt prove to be a paying institution.” ....

March 16, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported recent Washington County election results. S.T. Shipley was elected Sheriff. Maj. James E. Deacons was elected Circuit Court Clerk, while John F. Grisham was selected County Court Clerk. Capt. George McPherson was elected trustee, J.J. Yeager was elected revenue collector, and Lt. G.W. Douglas was elected register.
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time.
March 16, 1892: The Comet reported several items of interest to readers. “Dr. Bolton’s new residence is almost finished. It is very pretty.”

Jan. 30, 1896: The Comet reported that the Sultan of Turkey had recently allowed Miss Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, to distribute relief supplies in Armenia.
Jan. 30, 1898: Dr. Edward Thurston Brading was born in Johnson City. He was a veteran of World War I and practiced medicine in Johnson City for over three decades. Dr. Brading was a member of the Johnson City School Board, First Presbyterian Church, and the Rotary Club.
Jan. 30, 1915: The Chatta-nooga Daily Times, with a Johnson City dateline, reported about events that would soon be taking place at the circuit court in Jonesboro, which was spelled that way in 1915. “Circuit court will convene in Jonesboro Monday. This will be a very important term. There are seventy-two criminal and twelve civil cases on the docket. Among those are twenty cases of boot-legging (sic). The case of the State vs. Tom Bitner, charged with the murder of Ben Broyles at Limestone more than one year ago, and Deadrick S ....

Jan. 16, 1890: The Comet advised readers, “Study the history of current events; make careful comparisons of the fluctuations in price, in demand and in supply, in order to guide your own operations.”
Jan. 16, 1902: The Comet opined, “If Rev. R.J. Cooke does not soon take back what he said about the Daughters of the Confederacy inspiring anarchy there won’t be enough left of him to make a good roast.”
Jan. 16, 1914: The Chattanooga Daily Times reported on a tragic fire in Johnson City.
“‘Biltless,’ the handsome home of Col. Cy H. Lyle, editor of the Johnson City Comet, was completely destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon. The house was built fourteen years ago, and cost $20,000. Malcolm Lyle, a young son of Mr. Lyle, put some shucks on the fire in the sitting room and sparks from these fell on the roof. The furniture was saved. Only $2,500 insurance was carried on the property.” ....
