In a splendidly colorful and vibrant spring orchestrated by a fortuitous alignment of weather circumstances, the innocuously named “fig buttercup” is having the time of its life, decorating stream banks, hillsides, and yards with flowers “bright as the sun, himself,” in the words of William Wordsworth.
A 19th-century poet’s endorsement notwithstanding, Mark Gormel, horticultural coordinator at the Brandywine Conservancy, and other plant specialists around the country wouldn’t mind if this particular buttercup, known more properly as the lesser celandine, disappeared like yesterday. ....

Local farmer pivots farm business to create firepit starters after economic toll from COVID-19

Local tenant farmer Tama Matsuoka Wong has partnered with the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) to sell wild cedar firestarters in order to maintain her farm assessment, when her business of supply restaurants with speciality ingredients took a hit due to COVID-19. 
Prior to the pandemic, Wong farmed and foraged at the Marshall’s Corner (formerly known as Thompson) Preserve. Employing sustainable practices, Wong harvested and sold unique organic plants as specialty ingredients to high end restaurants in New York City. When the pandemic hit, Tama lost her customers overnight as restaurants shut down, according to a prepared statement.  ....

New Jersey may be known as the Garden State, but residents with green thumbs hoping to cultivate healthy, vibrant flower beds or lush, luxuriant lawns face numerous challenges. How numerous? Hillsborough’s Duke Farms, which calls itself “a model of environmental stewardship in the 21st century, has identified 55 species of invasive plants on its property, which encompasses 810 acres of woodlands and 464 acres of grassland bird habitat.
Folks whose experience with flowers may begin and end with cut carnations bought at the supermarket or bouquets purchased from a local shop may not understand the danger presented by invasive plant species, which often look quite attractive. Beauty in this case is definitely petal deep: invasive species also known as non-native or introduced species negatively alter their new environments, adversely affecting invaded habitats and bioregions. ....
