At least three persons were killed while three others managed to escape during an ambush on Monday (April 25, 2022).(Photo courtesy of Samar police provincial office) TACLOBAN CITY - At least three persons were killed while three others managed to escape an ambush in Calbayog City, Samar on Monday, just three days after a candidate was fatally shot in the same city. One of those who died on the spot was Mart Vicentino, 34, village secretary of San Antonio village in Calbayog, but a resident of Palale village in Sta. Margarita, Samar, police said. The two other fatalities were Germa Wahingon, 22 and Nilda de Pedro, 48, both residents of Camperito village in Sta. Margarita, Samar. Initial reports sent to reporters early Tuesday disclosed the victims were onboard a "habal-habal" (improvised two-wheeled single motorcycle) driven by Vicentino and traversing a narrow road in San Jose village, Calbayog City around 9 a.m. on Monday. When the motorcycle reached the curved portion of the road, an unidentified group of armed men, fired at the motorcycle, hitting Vicentino. After the first burst of gunfire, the armed men checked the body of Vicentino and shot him multiple times. The two other fatalities were killed during the attack while three other passengers managed to scamper to safety. The police identified the survivors as Remedios Diaz, 57; Lerma Dulay, 29; and Julita Casaljay, 68, all residents of Camperito village. The armed men grabbed a black bag from one of the victims and fled on foot towards the elevated portion of the village. Policemen have yet to know the contents of the bag and the motive behind the ambush. The incident happened just three days after a fatal shooting in Calbayog City of a candidate for the town council of Lope De Vega, Northern Samar. The victim Domingo Alvarez, a resident of Magsaysay village, Lope De Vega, Northern Samar was shot by an identified assailant in Oquendo-Catarman Road in Capacuhan village, Calbayog City around 8 p.m. on April 22. The victim is a former member of the Lope De Vega town council and running for the same position in this year's elections. Calbayog, a city in Samar province has been the site of several killings. Among the most publicized incidents was the fatal attack on Mayor Ronaldo Aquino and five others on March 8, 2021. Another known incident was the death of Pampanga-based journalist Jesus Malabanan on Dec. 8, 2021, who was shot in the head inside his store in San Joaquin village, Tinambacan District in Calbayog by "riding-in-tandem" gunmen.
