President donald trump takes aim at a Left Wing Group involved in the protests outlining plans to declare and teeth a terrorist organization. And a test of wills police and National Guard on standby as curfews come into effect in cities in more than 20 states. Well theres an uneasy peace across the u. S. As protesters continue to make their feelings known about the death and Police Custody of an unarmed black man its provoked widespread anger but so far no repeat of violent demonstrations over the past days people have gathered again in minneapolis where this all started did announce the death of george floyd he was killed by a white Police Officer who knelt on his neck for almost 9 minutes last monday but the National Guard has now been mobilized in several states to help contain the violence nightly curfews have been imposed on theres already a heavy Police Presence on the streets of many major. Cities in washington d. C. Hundreds of gathered outside the white house President Trump has come under fire for his continued critical comments about the protests but john hendren joins us live now from minneapolis john so we saw all these extra 1000 troops being brought into the city last night tell us whats been happening on the streets today. Well in the daytime theyre not out and theyre not really needed because the protests in the daytime are relatively peaceful you can see here people have created a circle of flowers at the site where george for later died over there under the red stoplight that that is where he lay as police lay on his back and what is going to happen is during the day weve had peaceful protests in the evening after her few things tend to get a little more raucous so that curfew begins at 8 pm thats about an hour from now local time and it is after that last night that the presence of the National Guard was really felt now theyre not the frontline troops what what they do with with a fountain of them now added a total of 1700. 00 they troll the perimeters they escort fire trucks that sort of thing that frees up the police to control the crowds and the police have been unable to do that for several nights so youve seen fires and looting late at night but last night an hour after curfew the police moved in heavy heavy use of tear gas and rubber bullets we got a whiff of that and saw some of those rubber pellets whiz past us as that happened took about 15 minutes for them to clear a space where thousands of protesters had gathered and then police pretty much held that night from there on there were no large gatherings that we could see or that we saw reported after that so the presence of the National Guard has really apparently made a difference the governor was embarrassed the other night and he said he was overwhelmed that he didnt want to see that happen again clearly. And those police as i say dear were really aggressive all right so many. States of curfew of people like you then to adhere to the stay off the streets or. In short you know weve been told by protesters that they will be out in the street theyll be out probably in the fountains as they have been before the question is whether the police can do what they did the night before and control them some of the protesters have told us that one of the one of the things that they have done when there is destruction of business ive asked a few people why does that happen and they say theyve tried to target major corporations not Small Businesses and that theyre trying to send a message and they believe its been kind of affective in this sense an officer was was arrested and charged with murder in relatively record time just a few days after george ford was killed usually those things take weeks but of course independent businesses have been hit i did see protesters stop someone who was targeting a building where there were apartments above there were some organized leaders who came in and stopped that from happening but some of those independent businesses have been hit we spoke to one and this is what she had to say. The fire when i saw 2 nights ago it was just it was a trek it was like a trauma that was just like checked again for me you know and i have put that away in my life long long time ago and right away i told my mom this is a war zone this feels just like a war zone right now me and my sisters and my brothers and my mom have been out in our business for the past 4 nights asking people this is black owned business please dont destroy this is a minority business please dont do this to us and john there are allegations that activists and agitates us from outside of the city a coming in to stoke on the rest so what are you seeing and hearing. Well there could be some of that going on in the governor initially said that it was outside agitators in his words who had come in but in fact the Police Released numbers and 80 percent of the people who have been arrested according to the police themselves are minnesotans and about 20 percent have been from out of state so that gives you an idea of whats going on here events like this do tend to draw people from out of state whether those people are organized protesters or not we simply dont know the answer to that but most of the people out here most of the people we talked to say they are from minnesota many athletes who are from this area so thats what were seeing right now interestingly enough george boyd is being buried not here but according to the mayor of Houston Texas that is where his Memorial Services will be held that is because thats where he considered a home having moved from here his family havent released details about that john but thats what we are to talk to john hendren day in minneapolis john thank you. Meanwhile in atlanta 2 Police Officers have been fired for using Excessive Force on protesters the citys police chief said members of her force cant be allowed to act with impunity i think is Law Enforcement if we are ever going to get. Out of this face that we are in today we have to recognize that our behaviors cannot consistently be pardoned because we are Law Enforcement. These these are good guys i know them as individuals ive worked with one for over 20 years. But they made that level of mistake that cannot be rolled back all right so lets see some pictures now of the incident in question a group of riot police swarmed around a car and arrested a couple inside local reporters who shot the video say police broke the window and flattened the tires the couple dont appear to be resisting but despite this they were forcibly pulled out of the car and hunk of on the ground lets join the live in Miami Florida a and b. So whats the latest there regarding the arrest of 5 policemen over that incident in atlanta from last night. Well it seems to be a pretty swift action and condemnation on the point of the leaders in atlanta we heard from the men earlier in the chief of police who said look this is simply not acceptable Law Enforcement officers are not above the law and if you watch the video it certainly looks like Excessive Force one of the policeman slashing the tie with a knife one of the passengers inside being tasered and theyve taken pretty quick action 2 of those offices have been fired the other 3 are on desk duty as i assume that an investigation will begin and this is the kind of thing that people are looking for in their leaders right now thats how sensitive this situation is but it seems like in atlanta at least where there were over 100 arrests on saturday night and it was some sporadic looting and clashes between protesters and police they have taken very quick action whether that will settle things down in the state of georgia where a mob or a was of course killed by 2 white men just a few weeks ago who seemed to corral him on themselves and then the local authorities really washed their hands of the whole thing but once again it was video that changed everything i read a quote earlier that that seems to ring true that racism hasnt gone away its just simply being filmed now that is quite a crucial thing to what were seeing going on across the country but for atlanta or at least which is a very important africanamerican city the authorities there said look this is enough if Police Officers take these kinds of actions and is seen to be Excessive Force they will face consequences so so thats the situation then the in atlanta lets talk about Miami Florida where you are and yesterday we saw violence and unrest on the streets so just bring us up to date whats happening today on the. Well the curfew is now in place there and its been in place for the for the last few minutes but ive heard reports there are hundreds perhaps even thousands of people in downtown miami who last night surrounded the main Police Station here and said at least one car on fire those people will need to disperse and not to get arrested because there were 56 arrests a last night most of those people were arrested for disobeying the curfew in Fort Lauderdale weve got a similar situation with a few 100 protesters there facing off against police but one report suggests that a Police Officer actually took the need and the protesters were really excited about but i about what he did there but lets think about the significance of that calling captain nick who is a professional american football was criticized widely by the right wing in this country for taking the need touring games he was called unpatriotic many other people saw that as differently saw him using his position of power to to really. Rail against Police Brutality he suffered consequences for that his athletic great was basically over but here we have a Police Officer in the state of florida taking a knee while facing protesters and the protesters seem to like that a great deal the National Guard here is also being called out but not deployed yet this states governor on to santa seems to be putting them in strategic positions if and when they are needed but things certainly seem to be a bit more peaceful here in florida tonight and of course this is the state where Trayvon Martin was gunned down 8 years ago by a selfappointed Neighborhood Watch captain George Zimmerman who was found guilty of carrying out that crime. And that was what really launched the black lives Matter Movement so all of this really resonates with the Africanamerican Community here in this state and of course hes not the only one whos been gunned down by a Police Officer in this state cory jones who pulled over on the side of the road was also shot and then of course a model break in georgia just a few weeks ago thats a case that still unfolding but the anger here is certainly still continuing although it seems to be at the moment a little more peaceful than it was last night all right under gallica there live for us from Miami Florida andy thank you for that. Or lets go to new york theres been criticism of the Police Response often calm was seen running demonstrators on saturday the citys mayor bill de blasio says an investigation will take place and it is not the way things are supposed to be there will be a full investigation into discipline as necessary there will be but do not present only one side of the picture i looked at those videos i saw people converging on the Police Vehicle i saw people throwing things at the Police Vehicle that is not peaceful protests so lets not kid ourselves if you anyone else was inside that Police Vehicle surrounded by people you would have had a really tough decision to make you cant stay there you cant get out of the vehicle you have to get yourself and the vehicle out of the situation safely for all. Of us on the joins us live now from new york. Police heavy handedness in new york earlier today with the man we just saw him bill de blasio weighing in what more can you tell us. Thats right there is a lot of criticism of the new york Police Actions on friday and saturday nights here in new york not only that course that incident you saw there with the police. S. U. V. Seemed to sort of plow through some protesters theres been other incidents where hes cases on a social media that weve seen of police indiscriminately pepper spraying protesters as well in one case even pulling down a protesters mask and spray painting them and then what would happen here so as youre seeing now theres a protest that was happening here in. Union square and thats why youre seeing some people walking from a camera. Walking from the camera you can see is a lot of a lot of anger right now. As people are peacefully protesting they just had a protest in union square behind me and now some about a couple 100 protesters are moving down the street but as you can tell this here and union square was where a lot of the worst of it took place with some rioting and some burning of some police cars but as you can see for the most part its been very peaceful all day d in new york the police have shown much much more restraint that he saw the last 2 nights and thats an interesting point you make gay because as you were telling us hundreds of people were arrested last night in the city so what level of policing and security could we see in the coming hours. Yet its been its nightfall is about to hit here in new york city but so far what weve seen and weve been out all day for the most part is weve seen a much much smaller Police Presence yes police around you see them right behind me there theyre just following this group of protesters but theyre not taking any sort of strong aggressive action now just a couple hours ago we saw a huge protest right in the heart of times square take a look at that. In one of the most famous spots in all of america time square and protesters are out in force thousands of them out here making their voices heard you can see them its young people its old its white brown you getting a whole crosssection of new york city here they are angry and they are calling for justice and they are taking their message out to all parts of new york city including here right by times square on saturday you saw protests in all the 5 major boroughs the new york city were seeing protests on sunday as well it is mostly very very peaceful here but the crowds as you can see are absolutely huge some of the largest crowds we have seen. For protests ever in new york city. And gave just very quickly new york is still the epicenter of the coronavirus the city supposed to be shut down but now you have this rather strange confluence of protests amid the lockdown. You know thats right its important to point out that new york city is still the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States this city is still technically on lockdown believe it or not but most protesters we talked to say that you know what theres something more important in their view. Coronaviruses here right now they feel that has to be put to the side as they go to the streets to fight for justice all right thank you for that all right lets cross to washington d. C. And talk to mike hanna president tweeting earlier about designating on t. V. Thats the far left radical group is a terrorist organization but can he do this because theres no domestic statute that allows for. Indeed no he cannot to declare it a terrorist organization as you say it cannot be applied to a domestic. Faction also very difficult to define and as an organization as such its more like an umbrella which covers a number of allied forces who are basically as the name suggests fascist this was also explained by the attorney general bill barr the made very clear that this was not going to happen in the terms of what president trans tweet was however what the attorney general was doing was directing the joint Terrorism Task force to investigate the violence that occurred during the protests and in that investigation elements of 24. 00 would be investigated as well but the president simply cannot declare the body. As a terrorist organization meanwhile were hearing that there are more protests near near the white house so we are less on the police so there was well what have you been hearing. Indeed yes well the demonstrators have been separated from the white house by quite a lengthy distance more than 200 meters with the park in front of the White House Park being closed to the public there are lines of police lines of National Guardsmen who been deployed and then of course is the secret service to do the internal perimeter as well as of course park police and metropolitan police the demonstrations being largely peaceful throughout the day about an hour ago there was a tense standoff between protesters and police the protesters on their way to join the fast bulk of demonstrators near the white house however things that mean going generally peacefully but washingtons mayor continued to make remarks about the president s comments and this is what she had to say. I think that the president has a role to play nationally in calming. The the iraq that we see in cities across america and i think that lead. He has to not incite violence and thats what we would expect and mike we understand former Vice President joe biden has also been tweeting what was he been saying. Well Vice President biden went too long to one of the protest site sit in a wilmington notably he was wearing a mask unlike his contender in the president ial election later this year but significantly to whether intentionally or by accident he knelt down while talking to one of the protesters now in his tweet he says that we have got to listen to the protesters as i am doing here it was clearly a conscious decision to tweet this particular photograph now this is very significant to potentially if this is an intentional act by the Vice President he is in a sense mimicking the taking the knee that was done by black athletes in protest against Police Brutality in previous years and certainly the image that the Vice President chose to tweet out will certainly spark reaction among people who would recognize it as a ping directly those actions taken by a black athletes against Police Brutality it was something that the President Donald Trump was absolutely vehemently opposed to and certainly this is likely to provoke some reaction from the white house might let me get a final thought from you Bigger Picture now how is this playing out politically for the president i mean hes at odds as you were telling us earlier with many of the states and local governors and mayors over the protests hes facing heavy criticism of the administrations coded 1000 response and now we have these nationwide protests. Indeed President Trump has been dealing with a series of crises and his critics contend that he was actually trying to deflect attention from the crises by stirring another one he did come under immense criticism for his handling of the pandemic many arguing that he acted far too late and that he opened up many areas far too early the fact for example that he refuses to wear a mask in public being pointed down highlighted by the fact that the Vice President biden his president ial contender does wear a mask when he goes out into public and all these elements are coming together and whats significant too is the local base of the criticism of the president its not necessarily the state governors whove been pointing fingers at him its the mayors of cities Like Washington d. C. Here and like chicago who have been passing unprecedented criticism on the president for his handling of the latest crisis and in particular for the comments that he has made during this ongoing crisis among them that would appear implying that his supporters should come and join the demonstrations as a counter effect to the protesters so certainly there may well be political damage for donald trump arising out of his actions during this ongoing crisis all right our mike hanna there in washington d. C. Mike thank you so lets move from the east coast of the u. S. To the west coast talk to rob reynolds hes live for us in Los Angeles Rob so the california governor governor has declared a state of emergency hes activated the National Guard in los angeles where you are so to talk us through whats been happening today rob. There in the focus of attention this day has been in the Beachside Community of santa monica this is a separate jurisdiction from the city of los angeles itself the hundreds of Peaceful Protesters marched chanted knelt in the street for many hours during the 1st part of the day but in the past hour police have been deploying plastic bullets smoke bombs and moving forward moving those protesters out of the area of downtown santa monica there was some looting and ransacking of stores we saw aerial photographs from local Television News helicopters showing people running out of shoe stores and Clothing Stores and Jewelry Stores with armfuls of goods jumping into cars and driving away we now see that the one building fire is being fought by Santa Monica Fire Department Officers and theres a car on fire separately in another city in this vast urban area derren long beach which is the main port on the west coast of the United States theres reports now of widespread looting at a Shopping Mall in long beach so that is also a disturbing thing the National Guard. Is in los angeles they arrived last night it is possible that the presence of the National Guard as a backup to the los angeles and other Jurisdictional Police departments could have some impact as the entire county now remarkably and a county of 10000000 people the largest in the United States is being put under curfew yeah and as you were as you were saying to us rob but there was considerable looting and violence yesterday now we have the National Guard in today is that like it to inflame the situation on the streets whats whats the feeling going into the night i was shortly. Does it seem that the National Guard is taking a very forward position at this point their job they say and Authorities Say is to back up the police so that the police can control crowds. Stop violence stop ransacking and so on so its not like a military occupation so they say i think theres theres something that no one i dont think has as pointed out and its related to your conversation with gabe a few minutes ago you know normally in times of civil unrest people will demonstrate out of strong conviction in this case over the case of george floyd and Police Brutality Structural Racism in the United States in general but after some time in normal times that is people need to go back to their jobs they dont want to lose their jobs by you know spending all their time demonstrating students dont want to fail their classes so they need to go back gradually normal life re asserts itself of course now we are in something very different from normal life when millions of millions of people have lost their jobs theres no school theres no classes the College Students and young people who may be making up a significant proportion of those who are taking to the streets out of conviction and protest dont have anything else to do so that is something i think that we need to one ask about when this could end and could it be prolonged by the very fact that there is so much joblessness and and interruption in daily life in the United States in every city all right robin is live for us there in Los Angeles Rob thank you for that well the justice for jones Floyd Campaign has gone global with people in london also showing their support. Thousands of protesters gathered outside the u. S. Embassy some held signs reading the United Kingdom is not innocent the rally was organized by the local chapter black lives matter other events are planned elsewhere across the United Kingdom aljazeera as many in baba reports from outside the u. S. Embassy in london. Before sundays protest here in london the citys mayor city can put out a tweet reminding people that coronavirus was still around or that they should stay home if possible that wasnt a direct reference to the demonstration but what happened was people werent deterred by any perceived risk they turned out in their many many hundreds in Trafalgar Square in the center of london. Chanting things like no justice no peace like lives matter say my name george floyd all things which we heard in the us some of them kneeling down they were eventually moved on by police and made their way through westminster past downing street the official residence of Prime Minister Boris Johnson a small group there chanted against him accusing him of being racist for his perceived use of racist language in the past they then made their way here to the us embassy for a while at least and theres a lot of anger but by and large the protest was peaceful ive seen a few arrests throughout the day but generally people were commenting on how the protest was good natured this is all against the backdrop of what people say is a misunderstanding here that theres only Police Brutality against black people in the u. S. Where as people here point out that there have been incidents of deaths of black men in power in Police Custody over the last few decades with very little numbers of them convictions or prosecutions against Police Officers so that was behind the passion that you saw on the streets of london and other cities in the u. K. On sunday. China is using the racial unrest in American Cities to criticize u. S. Action on the hong kong politicians and state media comparing the riots to the un to Government Movement in the territory but heres what the editor of approach Chinese Government used paper wrote. U. S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once called the violent protests in hong kong a beautiful sight to behold u. S. Politicians cannot enjoy the sight from their own windows such as it was difficult palin has the reaction now from hong kong. Chinese state media has been giving blanket coverage to the events unfolding in the United States telling its viewers that this is what democracy looks like the global times seen as a mouthpiece for the communist government it prints in both english and in chinese and is a major source of news within the country and outside the country has been publishing some very pointed at a tory also attacking the politicians which had supported the hong kong protests now a lot of articles have also been drawing parallels between whats happening in the United States and the hong kong prodemocracy protests rich unfolded last year where there were many scenes of violent confrontations between the police and protesters and the editorials are asking the u. S. Politicians like microamp a nancy pelosi and even donald trump whether they stand with the violent protesters and writers of minneapolis as they stood with the protesters of hong kong using a very popular chant during the hong kong protest now theyre also asking whether you know pointing out that china did not send in any army or any threat of the army coming in so on kong while there were almost daily protests but you know within days of protests in the United States the president had said that they would be calling in the National Guard and even possibly the army so theyre trying to draw parallels between whats happening in the u. S. And what was happening in hong kong and pointing fingers saying that asking what kind of support there is in calling them hypocritical. Weve just been hearing from minnesotas governor hes promised justice will be served over the death of george floyd and hes put the states attorney general in charge of the case when i spoke to the floyd family they were very clear they wanted the system to work for them they wanted to believe that there was trust and they wanted to believe the facts would be heard and justice would be served and i can tell you in minnesota having Keith Ellison his lead on this case that will happen and theres been some sympathy from police and other u. S. Cities with offices joining the protesters. The sheriff in flint michigan told them we are with you and want to make this protest a parade before he joined the march in coral gables florida and Santa Cruz California police knelt during a rally pose made famous by the footballer Colin Kaepernick in response to Police Brutality against black people in other States Police held banners with statements against violence and racism. The only reason i remember to make sure you got a boy thats in this. Respect they represent to these cops are from all over the county and around the stake we want there to help people not to do that nonsense. Theres no man. Were going to much. Better off going to say we want to be with you for real i took but i dont know if the latest attacks been i want to make this a parade the day. I want anything to do with the. People. 2 and a quick reminder you can catch up with all the news on the website all the latest on those ongoing protests across the u. S. Over the death of george floyd the address on jazeera dot com thats it for me the news continues here on aljazeera up the inside story straight from consequential. How divisive is politics in the United States politicians stand accused of running the flames of polarization is the country reels from many problems in an Election Year corona virus has had its toll on the economy and now the death of black american george floyd has found protests in dozens of cities so can america overcome its divisions this is inside school. Hello bulk of the Program Comes in l running back
