President trump strongly defends his America First policy in a speech to business and political leaders in vietnam. From this day forward, we will not allow ourselves to be pushed around anymore. More Sexual Harassment claims from the film world. The actor and producer Steven Seagal is the latest hollywood figure to be accused. And computer education is described as patchy and fragile, new research discovers more than half of schools in england fail to offer Computer Science at gcse. Good morning. Its friday 10th november. Im rachel schofield. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. We start in brussels, where the brexit secretary david davis is holding the latest round of talks, his sixth, with the eus chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, as pressure grows for agreement to be reached. Mr barnier insists the amount the uk will pay when it leaves the eu still needs to be settled before trade talks can start. The talks come as theresa may has outlined plans to set the uks departure date and time from the eu in law, warning she will not tolerate any attempt to block brexit. Meanwhile a leaked European Commission document says Northern Ireland may have to abide by the eus rules on the Customs Union and Single Market to avoid a hard border with the republic after brexit. Well speak to our correspondents in westminster and belfast shortly but first lets cross live to adam fleming in brussels. What is the morning hold . David davies, brexit secretary, arrived here to meet these officer number, eu chief negotiator Michel Barnier. In about 45 minutes, we expect the two men to do what they always do after a round of brexit talks, give us an after a round of brexit talks, give us an update, Michel Barnier says there has not been a great deal of progress, the uk must make more progress, the uk must make more progress on the key issues of citizens rights, eu nationals staying in the uk after brexit, financial settlement, calculating financial settlement, calculating financial obligations, and what to do about the irish border, and david davies says, actually, that may not be true. Under the surface there is a lot more progress when it comes to Technical Details of those three things. We will find out in 30 minutes time if that familiar pattern will repeat itself. Giving you were saying there is a rather well worn formula that is developing, do we think there is any issue where we may see progress, a sense that things are moving. There are rumours we may be about to see movement from number ten on the divorce bill settlement. The work that was used with me was consolidation which i think is brussels code for dont expect anything. 0n the issue of citizens rights, there is a little bit of progress every single time on very narrow detailed issues. Both sides release a spreadsheet at the end of a set of talks, issues they disagree with in red, agreement is in green, and every time the spreadsheet gets more green and the red area disappears. We study that but it is very detailed stuff, very technical. The money issue, the eu side has said to the uk, that you need to firm up your commitments on the finances in the next two or three weeks, because only then will eu diplomats start really seriously preparing for the next phase of talks, the future relationship, the transition period. If there is not movement in the next two three weeks, then the officials will not have time to get it done. That is when theresa may would like to say that the talks are moving to phase two. We will leave it there for now, who knows, you may be able to surprise us. We will have more from russell shortly, we expect the press conference from Michel Barnier and david davies very soon. But first to london where in this mornings Daily Telegraph newspaper, the prime minster attempts to silence the pro european rebels in her party. Lets talk now to our political correspondent, ben wright, whos in westminster for us. Enshrining this deadline and state, a symbolic message. And big talk from the Prime Minister, muscular rhetoric, about britain leaving the union on the 29th of march, and the government saying today they will put that commitment on the front of the withdrawal bill. Huge piece of legislation that overturns the communities act. And also transpose is that whole body of the eu law. 0 nto is that whole body of the eu law. 0nto the british statute. It is a vast piece of legislation, beginning to process through the Committee Stage of the commons last week. One thing many people have picked up one, in that bill, it is not so far actually spelt out the day of brexit, even though for a long time it is thought to have been march 2019, because that is two years on from when the government triggered article 50. Several people have pointed out, across the house of commons, pro european, tory eurosceptics, labour and conservative, that is problematic eurosceptics fear that not having that theyd spelt out means that it could be kicked down the road. And it will be fudged. 0n the labour side, significant questions about the power the government may have itself, the executive power to trigger it. Everyone is not eve ryo ne trigger it. Everyone is not everyone is happy. Inaudible the government is trying to choke off debate by doing this, Michael Heseltine says. Fixing in law the date will merely accelerate peoples decision to take investment elsewhere, not to make investment here, frankly its a panic measure, reflecting the growing anxiety that hostility to brexit is growing. And in order to make sure that Public Opinion doesnt get a chance to exert itself, of course theyve now shoved in this time amendment. Hope you can hear me a bit better now, lord heseltine talking about the fact the government had spelt out and included in the withdrawal bill the exact date of british departure from the eu, that is one thing that is certain but there are many more questions about how the bill will go through, how it will be amended, because there is lots of concerns about how the government is using executive power, the so called henry viii powers, to make decisions and change the statute book. A bit concerned about how parliament will have a final say on the withdrawal deal that is currently being negotiated and hammered out in brussels. What the government has said today does not change any of that at all. And keep very much. Now to belfast, because a leaked account of a meeting of eu diplomats this week suggested that Northern Ireland may have to abide by the eus rules on the Customs Union and Single Market after brexit in order to avoid the introduction of border checks. Lets cross to our ireland correspondent, chris page. What is the suggestion . This customs conundrum is other heart of the irish border issue in these brexit negotiations, according to documents put together by the European Commission, the uk should divert from those rules of internal markets and the Customs Union, which are all made in the future be necessary for meaningful North South Corporation, between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, and the protection of the good friday agreement, essentially what it is saying is that if the board is to be kept soft and invisible as it is at the moment, if there is to be no physical infrastructure, as negotiations on both sides have said, in Northern Ireland must follow the same rules around customs, around the Single Market, as the rest of the European Union. This very much reflects the Irish Government thinking on this matter, they have said consistently over a long period of time that in order to keep the border soft, easiest way for that to happen would be for the uk to stay in the Single Market and the Customs Union. We know that the uk does not plan on doing so. In august, the irish Prime Minister, nearin august, the irish Prime Minister, near in belfast, on the first visit to Northern Ireland, giving a highly significant speech saying there could be some form of bilateral Customs Union between the eu and the uk after brexit. Irish governments diplomatic pressure coming to bear here on the other you Member States. The Irish Foreign minister has been speaking on the morning radio programme, on ourta, speaking on the morning radio programme, on our ta, and speaking on the morning radio programme, on ourta, and he has said there is solidarity among other european states that the irish position. On rte. He has thrown down a challenge for britain, there is still some way until another progress has been made on the irish border issue to move onto the next phase of brexit talks. Uber has lost an appeal against a ruling on the Employment Rights of its drivers. The company say that they will continue to fight the decision with a further appeal. Two drivers won a landmark case against the cab hiring app last year after arguing they were employees and entitled to the minimum wage, sick pay and paid holiday. Uber challenged the ruling, saying it could deprive drivers of the personal flexibility they value. Simon gompertz is at the tribunalfor us. What moore has been said . Did not ta ke what moore has been said . Did not take long, the decision was handed down ina take long, the decision was handed down in a matter of minutes. What more has been said. The significance of this is that the original ruling last year which said that uber drivers were workers with workers rights, including minimum wage, holiday pay, sick pay, that is how they should be regarded, rather than as self employed independent contractors, which is how uber has been treating them. A couple of other points came out. Uber has tried to push the idea that it was an tried to push the idea that it was c , tried to push the idea that it was an agency, rather like your local minicabfirm, an agency, rather like your local minicab firm, down at the station, which used independent self employed drivers. The tribunal Appeals Committee here rejected that. It also tried to put forward the idea that they had limited working hours, but the tribunal he said no, as soon asa but the tribunal he said no, as soon as a driver logged on and was available for work, even though they may not have a passenger to take, they were effectively in a position where they should be paid. I spoke to one of the drivers who brought the case, as he came out, to get his reaction. Huge relief, and i really hope it will stick this time, i really hope uber will respect the ruling of the court. And now obey the law in this country. What would you like them to do now . I would like them to sit down and work with us, the trade union, the independent Workers Union of great britain, and sit down and work out how as quickly as possible, we can make sure that every driver working for uber gets the workers rights to which they are entitled, including the minimum wage, holiday pay, and. What difference will this decision may to them . Drivers are making £5 an hour, covering £400 are making £5 an hour, covering £400 a week in fixed costs, uber makes £4 50 for every hour we have worked, no matter what we we make. Now, if we wa nt matter what we we make. Now, if we want to make National Minimum wage, or london living wage, we have the world 125 hours a week, just to make that, now it is important we get paid the correct amount, with a Sustainable Business model, working for londoners and workers and works for londoners and workers and works for the as well. The question is what happens now, it will go on, the signs are that uber will appeal, this could end up in the Supreme Court next year, while that happens, uber does not have to change the way it operates, could be well into next year before we get a final decision on the issue. It is very important for other firms on the issue. It is very important for otherfirms in on the issue. It is very important for other firms in the so called gig economy, who are worried about how they should be treating their workers, bicycle delivery bike riders, and careers, plumbers, even, a case in the Supreme Court in february next year concerning plumbers as well, they will all be looking to see how this turns out. At the moment, working practices do not change, but this is a victory for the uber drivers, it is a real setback for aruba, in trying to maintain the self employed status that it once for drivers. The headlines the latest round of brexit talks are under way in brussels as pressure mounts on the eu and britain to break the deadlock in the negotiations as we have just seen, the online taxi hailing firm uber has lost an appeal against a ruling that gave its drivers Employment Rights, the company says it will fight the decision. Just like the is suing uk sport and british cycling, bbc sport have been told by a source that her legal action is based on claims that she suffered sextus rumination, victimisation and unfair dismissal. That she suffered sex discrimination. President trump has vigorously defended his America First vision of International Trade at a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic cooperation group. Speaking in the vietnamese city of danang, he said the us would no longer tolerate chronic trade abuses, and would in future insist on fair and equal treatment. 0n on this day forward, we will compete onafairand on this day forward, we will compete on a fair and equal basis, we are not going to lead the United States be taken advantage of anymore. Iam i am always going to put America First, the same way that i expect all of you in this room to put your countrys first the United States is prepared to work with each of the leaders in this room today, to achieve mutually beneficial, as that is in the interests of both your countries and my countries. That is the message that i am here to deliver. I will make bilateral trade agreements with any indo pacific nation that wants to be our partner and that will abide by the principles of fair and reciprocal trade. Well, the chinese president , xi jinping, told the summit that globalisation was irreversible and must give equal benefits to all countries. Translation in pursuing economic globalisation we should make it more open, more inclusive, more balanced, more equitable. And more beneficial to all. 0ur correspondent Aleem Maqbool is travelling with President Trump during his tour of asia, and hes at the apec summit in vietnam now. How would you describe the mood there . I think it was a really interesting speech today, those of us interesting speech today, those of us who have been travelling with the president were surprised that phrase was lavished on President Trump, and where was the President Trump who said the Election Campaign was things like china had been rape america for years, he laid out his grievances in strong terms, needed not mention china by name but a lot of us got the feeling he was speaking directly to ageing. The speech will go down very well for supporters at home and it fits a pattern over the last year, donald trump, throughout this trip, this five nations tour, has not been interested in influencing societies or human rights necessarily, or american values, this has been about the deal, about what america gets out of it. Which is fine. The mood when you ask about that, people from other parts of the region, are just opening the doorfor other parts of the region, are just opening the door for china to take a bigger leadership role, and you heard there are, in the two clips, donald trump talking about America First, and then china, and president xijinping, talking first, and then china, and president xi jinping, talking about first, and then china, and president xijinping, talking about this vision for the future of the region. A lot of people are worried that without better leadership, more influence from america in the region, you willjust get a more and more powerful china. In a way we have had visions laid out, what concrete developments, if any, may we see from the summit. That is another criticism, there has not been anything to announce that, no real news lines, in terms of what has come out of this, what deals. That is what donald trump is all about, deals. There has been nothing new in terms of initiatives announced. What he has done, more than anything is speak to an audience back home to say, i went to asia, andi audience back home to say, i went to asia, and i put it to them that this will work for us in the future more than any time in the past, which is fine, asi than any time in the past, which is fine, as i say, for him and potential re election and his future exploits at home. For those in this region, and in other regions around the world, looking to the United States to talk about human rights abuses, when there are issues in society, they will have been let down by the speech they heard from donald trump today. Thank you very much. More than half of schools in england fail to offer Computer Science gcse, according to a new report by the uks leading science academy. The Royal Society is calling for a ten fold increase in funding for computing education, which it says is patchy and fragile. Heres our technology correspondent, rory cellan jones. What effect does a binary shift left and a binary shift right have . In a classroom in st albans, some budding young Computer Scientists are deep in studying their gcse course. This school is in a minority. Todays report says computer education is fragile and patchy, with too few pupils given the chance to enter the exam. What is more common the subject is eating largely avoided by girls. So what has made these students take it up . Our future is very much based around computers and technology is becoming a big part of society. I knew that it would be useful to have, and i could get a job easily. Maybe in other schools it might be viewed as slightly nerdy to do Computer Science, but i think it is quite respected at this school. The Royal Societys report says too many young people are missing out on vital Digital Skills. Fifty four per cent of English Schools do not offer Computer Science as a gcse. Schools need 3,500 more compute in teachers. Only one in five Computer Science entrants are female. Both the teachers in this class have degrees in Computer Science, which makes them unusual. The Royal Society wants a big increase in spending on training new teachers. The computing industry says Digital Skills are vital for the uks future. If we want to remain a successful nation, a nation that is innovative, but provides products and services to drive us forward in the 21st century, we need people with advanced Digital Skills, in all industries and all sectors. The Department Education says it wants to ensure the future workforce has the skills the uk needs. This report says that without more computing teachers, that wont happen. Im joined by david evans, director of policy for the chartered institute for it. Thank you for coming in, paints a pretty grim picture. The big opportunity that we have taken a few picture. The big opportunity that we have ta ken a few years picture. The big opportunity that we have taken a few years ago, the government was very brave have taken a few years ago, the government was very brave in when a few years ago there was debate about this coming into the curriculum, looking internationally, able are coming from around the world to look at the progress we have made so far. The Digital World moves really quickly, and as we look today, we can see, clearly, through all the things happening in the economy and society, it is vital that every child has access and is encouraged to study what will help them survive. Given the huge focus these days on technology, and as you say, the courage shown initially by the government, what has gone wrong, why this lack ofjoined up thinking . lot ofjoined up thinking, and a lot of industrial support, and we have a ca rd of industrial support, and we have a card tray of teachers who have been working to develop each other, to make sure there is provision. Cadre. We have not quite put enough momentum behind it. The Royal Society report is calling for a massive step change in funding, the scale of what we are talking about, thatis scale of what we are talking about, that is still relatively small and volunteers, teachers themselves, learning how to best encourage children and give them the skills that are working together. Not so much that it is a failure, lack of policy, more than the Society Report says that we need to go all the way now. And in terms of making that happen, you are saying there is a funding shortfall, are you getting any guidance from the government as to whether that may change, whether there may be money forthcoming . We are certainly hopeful, it is up to the government as to what they want to do and how. At this point you have got industry, notjust the tech sector, you are seeing people from all across the economy saying, how incredibly important this is. Teachers themselves are the heroes of how far we have come so far, and they are the ones we need to support. The government would be doing extremely well to listen to all of that and fund it. In terms of getting 1. 2 million new technically and digitally skilled people that we need, apparently, by 2022, to meet the countrys business and technological needs, are we optimistic we can meet that . Are we lagging behind . I dont think we are lagging behind . I dont think we are lagging behind . I dont think we are lagging behind but looking at the challenges we face as a country, the opportunities we face, the faster we 90, opportunities we face, the faster we go, the better. For every parent, they should be looking to their school and asking, is this on the curriculum, is it being taught well. Not to bash the school but to ask, how can i support them, encourage them. There is a vast amount of free resources that schools can make use of that we have developed as a community and as government so that every single child has the chance now, that is what we need is today. Sounds like one to watch. Another day, yet more allegations about inappropriate Sexual Behaviour in hollywood. A police force is facing a legal challenge against its refusal to delete the details of a teenager who sent a naked photograph of himself on social media to a girl at his school. The boy, 14 at the time, was not arrested or prosecuted by Greater Manchester police but his mother said she was concerned police could release the information to potential employers when he is older. Lets get more from our Home Affairs Correspondent danny shaw. Give us more background about this. This boy did something very silly and stupid and naive than he was 14. He was in his bedroom and took a naked selfie and put it on snapchat, sent it to a girl at his school think that it was disappeared as soon as she had seen it but what she somehow saved it and shared it with other people. Police were called in. No action was taken against him and the details were logged on to the Police Intelligence data base the details were logged on to the Police Intelligence database under the heading obscene publications and saying that he had taken and forwarded an indecent image of himself and it is about the recording of the crime, the retention of it id either this case. And in terms of what happens today what challenges and cases are we likely to hear . The mother of the boy is really concerned that the details being on the Police Computer for the rest of his life she says will mean that if he applied for a job to work with children or vulnerable adults or a position where he has some sort of Responsibility Police would feel obliged to disclose it to his future employer and that would clearly hampered his chances of getting work right through his career. And so she once the details of his name to be removed from the database. Greater Manchester Police has refused to do so and that is why she is taking a case to court today. It is what is called an application for permission to bring judicial richard burr view proceedings so it is not the full hearing, the cac can get this particular hurdle and then a full hearing to determine what Greater Manchester has done is correct or not. In terms of the police force my understanding is they will argue that they have discretion as to whether this should be disclosed and when it comes to disclosure they would very carefully balance the risk that this individual poses with the risk to himself of disclosing this information, a careful balancing process would be undertaken. Clearly the family, the boys mother is unhappy about the prospect of that and fears that infect the force would err on the side of caution in disclosing and thatis side of caution in disclosing and that is why she wants his details to be looted. A last thought deleted. Is this an isolated case or are people watching this because it has wider implications . are people watching this because it has wider implications . I dont think this is isolated. 0ther has wider implications . I dont think this is isolated. Other cases Campaign Groups say have come to them and similar cases where police have acted in a heavy handed way or have acted in a heavy handed way or have retained details when they shouldnt and it illustrates this lack of clarity around what records should be held on databases about young people and how long it stays with them and the effect it has on their lives. I know you will keep us updated. Thank you. A new study is recommending a major change in the way women are screened for Cervical Cancer. It suggests those whove been vaccinated against the hpv virus need only have three smear tests during their life, rather than the 12 currently offered. Our Health CorrespondentSophie Hutchinson reports. Cervical cancer is a dangerous disease and it is also one of the most preventable cancers, but theres been concern about a steady drop in the number of women going for screening in the past few years. Currently women aged 25 to 49 are offered smear tests every four years and then every five years from the age of 50 to 64, but for almost a decade girls aged 11 to 13 have been given a vaccine against the cancer causing virus hpv. Todays study published in the internationaljournal of cancer is the vaccine reduces the chance of cancer by 70 and women who have had it only need to undergo three smear tests during their lives, instead of the normal 12, at the age of 30, 40 and 55. All Cervical Cancers are linked to hpv infection and having the vaccination dramatically reduces the chances of having the infection and also having Cervical Cancer. Screening looks for early changes that could suggest cancer is developing and quite simply having the vaccine means you are less likely to have those changes and less likely to develop cancer, so you dont need screening quite so often. The study comes ahead of changes to the Screening Programme in england for 2019 and similar adjustment in scotland and wales. New, more advanced lab testing is expected to be introduced, which could mean fewer smear tests for all women, whether vaccinated or not. Facebooks founding president has said hes worried about the effect the site is having on society. Sean parker, who says he no longer uses social media, said the network was built on exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology, and he was concerned about what it was doing to childrens brains. The unintended consequences of a network, when it grows to1 billion or 2 billion people, and it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other, you know, it probably interferes with our activity in weird ways. God only knows what its doing to our childrens brains. The french president Emmanuel Macron is making an unscheduled visit to saudi arabia to discuss the crisis in lebanon after the Prime Minister saad hariri resigned on saturday. Lebanon risks being the Battle Ground in the fight between the saudis and iran for regional supremacy. Saudi arabia has told its citizens to leave lebanon immediately and not to travel there from any country. Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have followed suit. From the lebanese capital, beirut, martin patience reports. Tensions are once again ratcheting up across the middle east. For now lebanon is taking centre stage, a country where proxy wars have been fought before. Lebanon was stunned by the resignation of its Prime Minister. Many see it as a saudi move, designed to weaken irans influence here. Till now i guess more than 60 . Hezbollah is its target. This man is a supporter of the movement. Translation the americans, the saudis and israelis are all trying to prevent hezbollah from maximising its gains from the wars in syria and iraq. Hezbollah and its allies have achieved enormous success, but are now facing huge pressure because of this. During the civil war here in the 1980s, the city was divided by warring parties. This building was on the front line. But today lebanon is divided by the regional stronghold and this country is seen as a pawn by the bigger players. This man belongs to a Political Party backed by the saudis. It seems like after the situation in syria is coming to an end, with the regime having the upper hand, some people are seeking dividends in lebanon for the role they played in syria. And those people are iran and hezbollah . Yes, and theyve openly expressed that, that we fought isis in syria, we drew isis away from lebanese borders and therefore we need to be recognised. Many fear a showdown here could trigger something far more devastating. In the last few decades weve never been so close to the precipice in many ways. The threat of regional war has never been this real, if you like, where its a conflict that would involve a variety of different countries. Lebanon has been an island of calm in recent years, but now it has found itself being dragged into the storm. Taking you to brussels now because Michel Barnier and david davies are giving a press Conference Following the latest round of talks. You can see Michel Barnier there. We are waiting for translation. Clearly he is addressing everybody in french, but just waiting for the is addressing everybody in french, butjust waiting for the translation butjust waiting for the translation but the sixth meeting of these two gentleman. Questioning whether any progress has been made of whether we will go through the same well trodden formula. Lets listen in. Translation translation if you translation if you read the resolutions and decisions of the European Council, you will see once again that only sufficient progress, thatis again that only sufficient progress, that is to say sincere and real progress, on three main key issues in these negotiations, only this sufficient progress will enable the triggering of the second phase of our negotiation. These three issues, as you know, let me repeat, then disassemble. Cannot be disassociated. I would also like to say in this extraordinary negotiation, complex negotiation, we not asking the United Kingdom for concessions nor are we planning to make concessions or cells. We are basing ourselves on facts and working on a legal basis. We are working on a legal basis. We are working on a legal basis. We are working on reciprocal and specific commitments. We must and we want to bring back certainty, particularly Legal Certainty where brexit has created uncertainty and a fair amount of concern. Ladies and gentlemen, on subsistence rights we are making some progress. Citizens rights. Although we need to work further on a number of points. The uk wants to put in place of administrative procedures through which eu citizens can obtain settled status. He needed reassurances on such a system working. It should be simple to use and low cost. We also needed reassurance on how people when rejected can appeal effectively. The uk has now provided useful, useful clarifications that area useful, useful clarifications that are a good basis for further work. We also had discussions on direct affect of the withdrawal agreement, and this is a key point to guarantee citizens rights. There are still a number of points need more work. Family reunification, the right to export Social Security benefits, and the role of the European Court of justice in guaranteeing consistent application of case law in the uk and in the eu. These three issues are important for people and the European Parliament has also stressed this. On ireland we will continue our dialogue on ireland and Northern Ireland. We have to ensure a common reading, the same reading of the conditions, consequences and implications of brexit and the good friday agreement and the common travel area. This should lead us to identify the technical and Regulatory Solutions necessary to prevent a Howard Porter while preserving the integrity of the Single Market. Hardboard. Itold you last time the unique situation on the island of ireland requires specific solutions. Translation on the financial settle m e nt translation on the financial settlement we need to work now over the next few weeks on the objective interpretations by Prime Minister may entered into in florence. I think this is absolutely vital if we are to achieve sufficient progress in december. As i said before i repeat that it is just a matter of settling accounts as in any separation. The United Kingdom decided to leave the union more than 500 days ago and it will be leaving the union on the 29th of march at midnight, brussels time. In order to achieve our common objective, that is to organise an orderly withdrawal on the basis of an agreement, we will also work as intensely as is necessary in the weeks to come in the run up to the next European Council meeting. Thank you. Thank you. Last month i welcomed michels new dynamic in the talks of the florence speech. That speech set out a clear and pragmatic approach to securing an agreement to purchase about the United Kingdom and European Union. One that heralds a new era of co operation and partnership us. During the october discussions we isolated the key remaining issues on citizens rights, Northern Ireland and the financial settlement as michel has just told you. This week our focus has been on finding solutions to those issues. It was of course inevitable that discussions were narrowed to a few outstanding and albeit important issues so we continue to work through these remaining issues, consulted the progress we have made since june and exploring options for reaching agreement. Now is the time for both sides to move together to seek solutions. This is a serious business. If we are to find a way forward we will require flexibility and pragmatism from both sides and i think michel also stressed this. We are clear with the European Union we are clear with the European Union we are willing to engage with discussions in defensible and constructive way to reach the progress needed. I will now address eachissue progress needed. I will now address each issue in turn. On Northern Ireland we have continued to have good technical discussions. We have drafted joint principles on the continuation of the common travel area and associated rights. We continue to explore how best we preserve the North South Co operation. We are drafting joint principles and commitments which will guide the solutions drawn up in the second phase. We have also had frank discussions about some of the big challenges around the order. We remain firmly committed to avoiding any physical infrastructure and we have been clear about that this week. These discussions will continue in the run up to the december council. But thats been under no illusions. We will only be able to conclude then finally in the context of a future relationship. We respect the European Union desire to protect the legal order of the Single Market and the Customs Union. But that cannot come at a cost of the constitutional and economic integrity of the United Kingdom. As isaid integrity of the United Kingdom. As i said before we recognise the need for specific solutions for the unique circumstances of Northern Ireland. But let me be clear, this cannot amount to creating a new border inside a United Kingdom. In this process we are resolutely committed to upholding the belfast or good friday agreement in all its parts. We need to approach a challenging issues that arise as pa rt of challenging issues that arise as part of this process in a spread of pragmatism, creativity and a high degree of political sensitivity. We owe that to the people of Northern Ireland and ireland. Have continued to make progress on citizens rights. We are now seeking Political Solutions to the last outstanding issues on both sides. Earlier this week as miss chel said we publish detailed notes setting a new proceed citizens in the eu is seeking settled status in the United Kingdom. The equipment i made in the la st kingdom. The equipment i made in the last round negotiations and the dutch are discussed in the press conference. We listen carefully to the concerns in this process and have responded. As our paper sets out the new procedures will be a streamlined and straightforward as possible. And we will be based on the simple trust buying criteria laid out in the liberal agreement. This week we have discussed options on issues ranging from family reunification to the export and benefits. For example we have been clear that we are willing to consider further reassurance we can give to existing families. Even if they are not currently living in the United Kingdom. There are a few areas where our citizens need to see further progress and movement from the European Union. On mutual recognition of professional caucasians, the European Union approach remains were narrowed the new. approach remains were narrowed the new. Qualifications. We believe it is right that people in the process of acquiring altercations this should be allowed to continue or begin theircareers this should be allowed to continue or begin their careers as they do now. We want to protect life denying with a broader approach that people should be able to continue living daylights as they do now. On Voting Rights we are disappointed that the European Union has been unwilling to go with this in the agreement however if it does follow the scope we will discuss this issue bilaterally with Member States. Finally this week we have sought to give further clarity on our commitment to incorporate the agreement on citizens right into uk law. This would ensure the European Union citizens and United Kingdom can directly enforce rights in uk courts providing certainty and clarity long term. We make clear that over time our courts can take account the feelings of European Court ofjustice in this area to help ensure a consistent interpretation. But that they be clear. While we share the same aims it remainsa clear. While we share the same aims it remains a key priority of the ancient kingdom as we leave the European Union to preserve the sovereignty of our courts. On the financial settlement we have made substantial technical progress across all the issues that need to be addressed. The Prime Minister was clear in her florence speech but let me reiterate once again. Our European Partners will not need to pay more or receive less over the remainderof pay more or receive less over the remainder of the current budget plan asa remainder of the current budget plan as a result of our decision to leave. The uk will honour the commitments we have made during the period of our membership. We are making clear progress in building a common technical understanding on every item here. As i outlined at the start. This week has enabled us to consolidate the progress on earlier negotiating rights and to draw others areas of further political and technical discussion required. This is now about moving into the political discussions. It will enable both of us to move forward together. We must now look forward together. We must now look forward and i had to moving our discussions on the future relationship. For this to happen but parties need to build confidence in both the process and indeed in the shared outcome. We remain ready and willing to engage as often and as quickly as needed to secure this outcome of the weeks remaining head of the december European Council. The United Kingdom will continue to engage and because yet constructively as we have done since the start. But we need to see pics ability and imagination and willingness to make progress on both sides. If these negotiations are to succeed and we are able to realise a new deep and special partnership. By few. Thank you both. I will start with the german press agency. Mr barnier can you confirm that you will need clarifications or concessions, whichever you prefer, from the uk within two weeks in order to move on to the second phase in december . Thank you. On the right, yes, james. Mr davies, what happened to accelerating these talks as mr ahmed promised, it has been almost a month since you had these talks, these dogs have lasted two days instead of four and the youth understand the Business Concerns that this time is passing and the uncertainty. After watching recent events in london how concerned are you now that before this process is over you may be dealing with a different government than the uk in the uk. Dealing with a different government than the uk in the uk. We remain willing and ready to engage as often and quickly as is needed to ensure this outcome of the weeks remaining head of the december European Council. There has been a change in pace, i think, council. There has been a change in pace, ithink, but council. There has been a change in pace, i think, but ultimately this is about delivering results and that will depend on the content notjust the speed of the negotiations. Will depend on the content notjust the speed of the negotiationslj the speed of the negotiations. dont know which is the easiest question. Translation evolve the public debate in the uk closely. We tried to provide information and answer questions. The other day i was struck by the reaction amongst the british population. You are watching bbc news. Our coverage of this press conference. We are about to say goodbye to view was on bbc two. If you wish to stay with our coverage of this press conference to stay with us here on the bbc news channel. Michel barnier, can you tell us what you will do if you do not get the clarification that you want within two weeks, and secondly, i mean, this is now the sixth round of negotiations, perhaps we could say five and a half because this week was five and a half because this week was not much. How confident are you that you will get clarification to continue to get a deal on sufficient progress in december, if you look to what happened in the last five and a half round . Translation technical experts are still working with each other, in between the rounds, to prepare for the rounds, in order to clarify certain points. And so, as im sure you appreciate, these rounds are important, certainly, for me, because i am working with a certain remix, and under the supervision of the council, the other Member States, and the European Parliament. Remit. I need to embark on in depth dialogue with all of these people, and that is why i need time. But very professional teams of experts, among them david davis, their teams, our teams, they do have exchanges and discussions in between rounds, to prepare for them. Like you said, six rounds, yes. But, you can see how complex these negotiations are. Now, we have not actually taken stock of everything yet. From a legal point of view, there is 1000 International Agreements that the uk is going to have to leave in one way or another. There will be human and social repercussions. Six rounds is hardly anything. Hopefully we will be having a seventh round soon. We are not at the stage of settling everything but we want sufficient progress. We want sincere and real progress, as i said. I myself have to tell the citizens about what rights they are going to have. We have to make sure that eu citizens in the uk, and uk citizens in the Member States must report to them. There are many other actors, the European Development fund, many other actors outside europe, for insta nce other actors outside europe, for instance in africa, which are also involved. We have to make sure we maintaina involved. We have to make sure we maintain a stability and dialogue in ireland. We have not got to that stage yet. We are not trying to settle all the details now, if we manage regional agreement on sufficient progress, we will have several months right through to october 2018, to finalise this draft treaty, this agreement. But from a political as well as a technical and financial point of view, we need to have sufficient progress on these three issues. Citizens, Northern Ireland, the financial settlement, but we have not yet got there. Peter foster, london Daily Telegraph. David davis, you have you said yourself, we need to move the political discussion about the money, this week has been a stocktaking exercise. Tell us why you will be in any better a place to make a deal in december, than you we re make a deal in december, than you were in october. And, to Michel Barnier, these talks are deadlocked, you yourself had a very good suggestion about how to move them on, you could talk transition with the british while thrashing out the details of the bill but you were overruled by the Member States, do you feel like have the personal authority to conduct this negotiation. To put it another way, is conducting this negotiation, you, or, the french and the germans . The first thing to say, december depends on sufficient progress, that is a commission constructed. As michel has been waning, just what that looks like. Lets be clear, i have said on several occasions, in these press conferences, including today, there is no doubt that we have made and continue to make, including this round, significant progress across a whole range of issues. Progress around resolving difficult questions. That will continue, at pace, between now and december. Translation subject to the European Council, and the European Parliament, if that is not the case, then we will continue. We will be open to discussions on the future, which brings me to your question now, that includes the transition, because that does relate to the future, because it would start on march 30, 2019, after the actual exiting of the United Kingdom. And, our future relations and the Long Term Partnership that we wish to agree on with the United Kingdom. Of course, france and germanys position is important, they have important points of view on these matters, but i listen to all 27 eu Member States and the European Parliament, and. Yesterday i was in italy, meeting the Prime Minister, i was in slovakia last week, next monday i am stolen. And week, next monday i am stolen. And we have concerns with other Member States and governments. Studio that press conference coming to an abrupt end, journalists questions and to an end, Michel Barnier and david davis moving away from the podiums after the sixth round of brexit talks. It seems ending without any major break through. Michel barnier said his top priority was to Reach Agreement on the first phase of negotiations before the European Council summit, scheduled for december. Lets speak now to brussels reporter adam fleming, following all of that. And we we re fleming, following all of that. And we were talking earlier about the well trodden path these talks tends to ta ke well trodden path these talks tends to take thus far, did you see anything that made your heart beat anything that made your heart beat any quicker . As a journalist, looking at what the story is, the story that emerged is about the money, one word, i think it was a german journalists had to Michel Barnier, any confirmed these reports that we have been reporting all week, that you think the uk has to clarify its offer on the financial obligations as it leaves the un next two weeks, for there to be time to get sufficient progress to go to trade talks for the summit in december. He said, simply, yes, confirming that. He expects he once demands, whatever word you want to use, that the uk does something more on money, clarifies what the Prime Minister meant in a foreign speech living up to obligations as a member, in the next two weeks, otherwise, there will not be enough time, enough trust between the two sides, not time for the european officials to do preparatory work for trade talks to be triggered at the december summit. That seems like a ha rd december summit. That seems like a hard deadline. The talks seem to some talk seemed to have come to an end, they are quite academical, now it is political, they have to be settled by sitting down and haggling, the Prime Minister, president jean claude juncker, getting involved and having a proper political discussion about how to solve this problem because at the heart of the problem is that both sides see it in a completely different way. Shell barnier and the 27 remaining members of the the eu think it was a case of the uk settling its accounts, paying up things that it promised to do when it was a member, even if the bills come after the uk is no longer a member and has left. David davis says he wants to link the money to talks about future trade arrangements. Michel barnier. He wa nts to arrangements. Michel barnier. He wants to talk about transition period and trade deal, that they may share in the future, it is now about how do the politicians find a way of reconciling those two very different positions. Those Things Holding things up, but they outlined other issues that continue to cause a headache. Northern ireland, there is broad agreement, nearly broad agreement, on the principles of the fa ct agreement, on the principles of the fact that you have got to protect the good friday agreement which ensures the Peace Process and the common travel area, which allows people to move between Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland and live their daily lives across the board. Both sides are clear, they respect those principles and agree that is what should be achieved. The devil is in the detail, to use a cliche, and we will get a sense of how, located that detail and have complicated and difficult that detail might be. A lea ked difficult that detail might be. A leaked document is doing the rounds in brussels, from the eu side, saying, Northern Ireland is probably going to have to stick to the same rules as the Single Market and the Customs Union as the rest of the the eu, for Cross Border Co operation to continue. David davis was very clear, he said he would not accept anything that affected the sovereignty of the United Kingdom or created a new border within the United Kingdom. Basically repeating something the Northern Ireland secretary general broken shire said when he was here in brussels on monday, it is virtually impossible for Northern Ireland to remain in the Customs Union and the Single Market because that, that will wreck its relationship with the rest of britain. There is immense goodwill on both sides, to try to address and tackle the problem. For the moment, thank you very much. Lets talk now to our political correspondent, ben wright, whos in westminster for us. Back home, theresa may trying to keep everyones eyes on the date when everything has to be wrapped up by. March 2019 2019, two years on from when she triggered the article 50 process. In his commentsjust there, Michel Barnier said that the uk will be leaving on that date, thatis uk will be leaving on that date, that is what has been understood. But in the last 24 hours, the government have said, what they will do is put that exit date on the front of the eu withdrawal bill that is going through parliament, and that begins its line by line scrutiny in the commons next week, a hugely important piece of legislation that transfers the whole of eu law that applies to the uk onto our statute books, there was a strange omission so far, the date had not been spelt out. That caused concern across the house of commons, eurosceptic tory mps worried that it opened the possibility for brexit to be eked down the road but pro eu voices on the labour and tory benches were concerned that by not spelling out the date and giving parliament is the right to vote on that, it was handing too much power to ministers. To be kicked down the road. The government have confirmed they will put the date on the bill, on the eve of this progress through parliament. Little more then on the progress of the bill, reaching the Committee Stage, talk us through what is going to happen and there is a lot of amendments being put forward. A vast bill, 66 pages, there are more than 300 amendments that have been put down. It is a colossal piece of legislation, and the government knows that it faces revolt is on the way. There is concern about the way that the government will be using executive powers to hustle this legislation through as fast as possible. Because it is so large. Big concern about what will the state is be of the vote that mps have been promised they will have on the withdrawal deal, once it is done, before britain leave the eu, some suggestion a few weeks ago that that would come after britain leave the eu. There will be a big cross party the eu. There will be a big cross party attempt, led by a tory mp, dominic grieve, former attorney general, to insist and ensure there isa general, to insist and ensure there is a vote on the withdrawal bill by parliament before britain needs. All of these will be subject to amendments, tight vote s, and the government is braced for that, but what was interesting in the article theresa may vote wrote for the telegraph, her tone was belligerent, muscular. The article that theresa may wrote for the telegraph. She said they will respond to these amendments. Irrespective of those, brexit will be happening and Parliament Must understand that. The eus brexit negotiator says that the uk has two weeks to clarify how much it will pay, if progress is to be made at a key summit in december. The ball clearly appeared to strike him on the shoulder but the referee awarded a penalty and Ricardo Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game from the spot. To make matters worse, evans will miss sundays 2nd leg through suspension. It was disgraceful, i clearly did not put my arm out, i know that it hit me on the back of the shoulder. Iam hit me on the back of the shoulder. I am absolutely gutted. He has booked me as well so i am out second leg. That is devastating. These things happen. You have to get on with it. That is all the sport for the moment, more in the next hour. The decision was handed down in a matter of minutes. Its dismissed ubers appeal. The significance of this is that the original ruling last year which said that uber drivers were workers with workers rights, including minimum wage, holiday pay, sick pay, that is how they should be regarded, rather than as self employed independent contractors, which is how uber has been treating them. A couple of other points came out. Uber has tried to push the idea that it was an agency, rather like your local minicab firm, down at the station, which used independent self employed drivers. The tribunal Appeals Committee here rejected that. It also tried to put forward the idea that they had limited working hours, but the tribunal said no, as soon as a driver logged on and was available for work, even though they may not have a passenger to take, they were effectively in a position where they should be paid. I spoke to one of the drivers who brought the case, as he came out, to get his reaction. Huge relief, and i really hope it will stick this time, i really hope uber will respect the ruling of the court and now obey the law in this country. What would you like them to do now . I would like them to sit down and work with us, the trade union, the independent Workers Union of great britain, and sit down and work out how as quickly as possible, we can make sure that every driver working for uber gets the workers rights to which they are entitled, including the minimum wage, holiday pay, and the right to not be discriminated against. What difference will this decision may to them . Drivers are making £5 an hour, covering £400 a week in fixed costs, uber makes £4. 50 for every hour we have worked. No matter what we we make. Uber will always make £4. 50. Now, if we want to make National Minimum wage, or london living wage, we have the world 125 hours a week, just to make that, now it is important we get paid the correct amount, with a Sustainable Business model, working for londoners and workers and works for the as well. And works for uber as well. The question is what happens now, it will go on, the signs are that uber will appeal, this could end up in the Supreme Court next year, while that happens, uber does not have to change the way it operates, could be well into next year before we get a final decision on the issue. It is very important for other firms in the so called gig economy, who are worried about how they should be treating their workers, bicycle delivery bike riders, and careers, plumbers, even, a case in the Supreme Court in february next year concerning plumbers as well, they will all be looking to see how this turns out. At the moment, working practices do not change, but this is a victory for the uber drivers, it is a real setback for uber in its effort to try to maintain the self employed status that it wants for drivers. President trump has vigorously defended his America First vision of International Trade at a summit of the Asia Pacific Economic cooperation group. Speaking in the vietnamese city of danang, he said the us would no longer tolerate chronic trade abuses, and would in future insist on fair and equal treatment. From this day forward, we will compete on a fair and equal basis, we are not going to lead the United States be taken advantage of anymore. I am always going to put America First, the same way that i expect all of you in this room to put your countrys first. The United States is prepared to work with each of the leaders in this room today, to achieve mutually beneficial, as that is in the interests of both your countries of both your countries and my country. Our correspondent Aleem Maqbool is travelling with President Trump during his tour of asia. He said the president s speech at the apec summit would be well received by his supporters back in the us a lot of people were surprised that he stood next to president xi and lavished praise and said that there was no animosity at all and we wondered where donald trump had gone, the donald trump that during the Election Campaign was saying that china had been raping the United States economically for years. The speech will go down very well for supporters at home and it fits a pattern over the last year, donald trump, throughout this trip, this five nations tour, has not been interested in influencing societies or human rights necessarily, or american values, this has been about the deal, about what america gets out of it. Which is fine. The mood when you ask about that, people from other parts of the region, are just opening the door for china to take a bigger leadership role, and you heard there are, in the two clips, donald trump talking about America First, and then china, and president xijinping, talking about this vision for the future of the region. What he has done, more than anything is speak to an audience back home to say, i went to asia, and i put it to them that this will work for us in the future more than any time in the past, which is fine, as i say, for him and potential re election and his future exploits at home. For those in this region, and in other regions re election and his future exploits at home. For those in this region, and in other regions around the world, looking to the United States to talk about human rights abuses, intervene when there are issues in society, they will have been let down by the speech they heard from donald trump today. Police were called in no action was taken against him, but the details we re taken against him, but the details were logged onto a Police Intelligence database the heading of seeing publication saying that he had taken and forwarded in a distant image of himself. And it is about that. It is about the recording of the crime, the retention of it that is the heart of this case. In terms of what happens, what kind of challenges are we likely to hear . The boys mother is really concerned that the details being on the Police Computer, she says will be there basically for the rest of his life and it means that if he applied for and it means that if he applied for a job to work with children or vulnerable adults in a position where he has some sort of responsibility, police might feel obliged to share that. And that could hamper his chances of getting work. She wants the details of his name to be removed from the database. Greater name to be removed from the data base. Greater Manchester Police has refused to do so and that is why hes taking the case to court. Today. It is what is an application for permission to bring judicial review proceedings. It is not the full hearing, but there is a hearing to see whether they can get past this legal herder and then with legal hurdle. And then there will be a look to see if it is correct or not. My understanding is they will argue they have discretion as to whether it should be disclosed. When it comes to disclosure, they would very carefully balance the risk of this person poses and the risk he poses to himself with exposing the information. Clearly the family of the boy is unhappy with the prospect. She fears that in fact the force would err on the side of caution and disclose it. That is why she wants the details deleted. Final thought. Is this an isolated case . Or people watching this because it might have wider locations . I dont think so. There are other cases that Campaign Groups said they have come to them where police have acted in a heavy handed way. It illustrates the sort of lack of clarity around what records should be held on databases about young people and how long it stays with them and the effect that it has on their lives. More than half of schools in england fail to offer Computer Science gcse, according to a new report by the uks leading science academy. The Royal Society is calling for a ten fold increase in funding for computing education, which it says is patchy and fragile. Heres our technology correspondent, rory cellan jones. What effect does a binary shifts left and a binary shift right how . In a classroom some running young Computer Scientist di deep in debt gcse course. This school is in a minority. Todays report says computer education is fragile and patchy, with too few pupils given the chance to enter the exam. What is more the subject is eating largely avoided by girls. 54 of English Schools do not offer Computer Science as a gcse. Schools need three and half thousand more compute in teachers. Only one in five Computer Science entrants are female. Both the teachers in this class have degrees in Computer Science, which makes them unusual. The Royal Society wants a big increase in spending on training new teachers. The computing industry says Digital Skills are vital writtens future. If we want to remain a developed nation, a nature that, nation that is innovative, but provides products and services to drive us forward in the 21st century, we need people with advanced Digital Skills, in all industries and all sectors. The department for education says it wants to ensure the future workforce has the skills the uk needs. This report says that without more computing teachers, that wont happen. Currently women aged 25 to 49 are offered smear tests every four every three years. Years and then every five years from the age of 50 to 64, but for almost a decade girls aged 11 to 13 have been given a vaccine against the cancer causing virus hpv. Earlier we discussed the impact of hpv and these new proposals. One of the guests was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer in 2015 after routine pap smear. She claimed how she was diagnosed. It was during my regular screening. I didnt miss one. I went in 2015 and i didnt have any symptoms. I had the screening and unfortunately they called me back because there was some abnormal cells and in september 2015 i had a radical hysterectomy due to early stage cervical cancel the mac cancer. It was very aggressive. I was told if i hadnt been screened it would have been a different story. It is so important. And it is a great thing about the new hpv screening. In no way, it is down to luck because you were approaching the screening. Otherwise it would have been. Another three yea rs . It would have been. Another three years . Yes, and it is so easy. We all have these busy lives and it is so easy to put it off. But it is so important that people go on time to detect early changes. How do you feel about the news today . Is brilliant. I have two teenage daughters and they both been vaccinated and they are absolutely fine. I encourage everyone to have the vaccine. Along with the vaccine and the new Screening Programme, it is just and the new Screening Programme, it isjust a and the new Screening Programme, it is just a brilliant thing. And the new Screening Programme, it isjust a brilliant thing. Whys it so important for girls to have the vaccination . He can stop them from getting Cervical Cancer. That is what we want. It is really exciting times for Cervical Cancer. We now know what causes it and we can look for it and as you say, we are turning the programme over so we can find it. Weve got a prospect of stopping it. This is what the study had has found, when can this new programme come in contact . Programme come in this had has found, when can this new programme come in this is a model. The researchers have said if this happens, it happens in this way. Chances are it would be safe for women chances are it would be safe for women to have many fewer screenings. Looking at the cells under the microscope, looking for the presence of the virus. We will get that in place by the end of 2019. Could we get to a stage where we really do minimise cases of serious Cervical Cancer . Yes, weve seen huge drops are ready. I dont want to say lemonade. If people took the screening offer up, it would stop more than 80 of cancers cases of Cervical Cancer. You said there are declining numbers of women going for their screenings. Why . declining numbers of women going for their screenings. Why . I think there isa mix their screenings. Why . I think there is a mix of reasons. Apart from the obvious. It is not the procedure itself, although it doesnt take very long, it might not be the most co mforta ble very long, it might not be the most comfortable thing to do. Some people find it uncomfortable and some people are worried that they will find it uncomfortable. And people live busy lives. If youve got many jobs and many children, it can be difficult to get access to a gp or a clinic to do these things. There are some really interesting work that suggests that about people who have never had have never heard of it. That debate earlier today. Lets have a look at our headlines. At the latest round of brexit talks, the eu and britain say some progress had been made on citizens rights, but there is still disagreement on the irish border and how much britain would pay when it leaves. The online taxi hailing firm uber, has lost an appeal against a ruling that gave its drivers Employment Rights the company says it the company says it will fight the decision. President trump has defended his America First approach at an Asia Pacific Economic summit. Now, it was one of the bloodiest battles of the first world war. Hundreds of thousands of young men were killed or wounded during the battle of the somme. Ahead of armistice day, an artist has made it his mission to remember the fallen in a unique way. Hes creating more than 72,000 figurines, one for each of the men whose bodies were never found. John maguire reports. It was called the war to end all wars and when you see this physical representation of 19,240, the number of men killed on just the first day of the battle of the somme, you understand how unimaginable any future wars would have been. But we know different. This is the artist rob heards tribute to those who lost their lives. Its so important that that number is physicalised in any way it can be. To understand that these arent just numbers, these were men and they still are. The first shrouds were laid out in exeter and bristol last autumn. Each figure deserves its moment in time. And for the past four years, rob has covered these figurines with plastic and flexible joints to allow a natural form in the tiny hand stitched shrouds. He is working 12 hours a day, self funded, and now has a new goal, 72,396, one for every man who died at the somme and whose bodies were never recovered. When you understand or you try to think what these men suffered, how they died, they didnt die easy, they died hard and i think, how can i say this is hard work when youre dealing with that . It gives me a great sense of perspective. When you think about all the lights that were lost, it brings it into focus. This mans great uncle died on that first day. 19 year old ronald was neverfound. My grandfather never spoke about it and when i spoke to my father he said it was a conversation they never had and i can only assume it was too tough to talk about. Its important that we remember these things, that these faces are not just forgotten, what they did for us and for the future. And theres interest from a new generation 100 years on. These a level students, the same age as some who fought in the great war, are studying robs work. The shrouds from the somme will be laid out in london to mark the centenary of the first world wars end and today there is a Public Appeal for any family personal information about the 72,000. We hope that people will be inspired by the artwork, just as we were, to go out and find out more about these people, to put faces to those names, to put life back into the dead and thats why are really proud to be working with shrouds of the somme, to ask the nation to go and seek these stories and help us retell the stories for a new generation. Rob has placed all the names on these boards. He is committed to creating a shroud for each man, one by one, to make hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, lest we forget. A year after his election victory, President Trump is living up to his campaign pledges on the environment leave the paris climate accord, roll back environmental laws at home and burn more coal. This week, as nations meet in bonn for the annual un climate conference, our environment analyst Roger Harrabin has been to the usa to hear how some states there, are fighting back. Southern california. A funnel for the wind that brushes from desert to coast. This land, stone, great, a little bit of scrub, useless for agriculture. But there is one very lucrative thing here. And that is the clean energy from the desert wind. Renewables boomed under president obama, but President Trump say their variable output threatens the economy. He wants to subsidize coal and nuclear. Hes trying to scrap 50 environmental rules. He wa nts to scrap 50 environmental rules. He wants to allow coal plants to pollute more. 15 states led by california are fighting back with plans for emission cuts for housing, and cars. We are in a contest for ideas. Depending on the outcome of this contest will determine what the rule is going to look like for the next ten, 20, 30 years. Here is californias answer. These steel containers near san diego make up the biggest lithium battery in the world. Storing energy when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. They can take energy that is generated when wind and solar are abundant and move it to the peak times when the grid might need it and those Energy Sources might not be available at the level that are needed. President trump promised voters he would bring backjobs in coal. 26 states supported his plan to scrap the obama clamp down. Coal. 26 states supported his plan to scrap the obama clampdown. That climate accord was a fraud. It was nothing more than an attempt by developing companies of the world to get american dollars. It will have no environmental benefit at all. Mr trump also wants to relax emission standards from american vehicles, again to protectjobs. But californias governor says that will backfire. He wants to go towards he thinks chinas move towards electronic cars will validate their stronghold. Yeah, theyre going to ta ke stronghold. Yeah, theyre going to take over the american car industry. And we are half asleep. We have to wa ke and we are half asleep. We have to wake up. President trump is set on promoting american fossil fuels. A salesman for the us coal industry is with the us delegation is with america for the climate talks. Imagine how that is going down. Its the worlds most remote inhabited island, with a population of just 259 people. Tristan da cunha has just one school, one hospital, one policeman and only nine different family surnames. Now, three students have left the relative tranquillity of the british territory which lies 12 hundred miles from the nearest inhabited land in the south atlantic, for the hustle and bustle of the uk in order to study for their a levels. Graham satchell has been to meet them. Jade, janice and rihanna are a long way from home and slightly overawed about the experience of being in london. Its very big. So many people is that where they keep the crown jewels, or used to . Coming from somewhere where there is Little People to somewhere like this, its a big difference. We dont have very much traffic on the island and here you have to look like four or five ways before you can cross a street and stuff. Its like, yeah, quite a big difference, really. The girls are in england to study for their a levels, but home is the british territory of tristan da cuhna. Halfway between south africa and south america, its a tiny volcanic island in the south atlantic ocean. From the sea, the volcano dominates everything. Theres just one village on the island. The total population, 259 almost all are descended from the original settlers 200 years ago. Its a fishing and farming community. Its a very simple lifestyle. You live how your ancestors did, basically. Nothing has changed dramatically. Everyone is very close. Its a small community. Everybody helps each other. I think we are all equal and we are all treated equally as well. Tristan da cuhna is the most remote inhabited island on earth. There is no airport, a boat comes once every two months and its a seven day sail to cape town. Even though our island is so isolated, as individuals youre never alone, whereas in london its not isolated, but as an individual because you dont know anybody you sometimes feel isolated. But on tristan its impossible for you to feel alone. So this is the original Co Partnership that was signed by the original settlers, including ian glass. William glass. He was your great grandfather . Yes, the girls have come here to see an extraordinary document. Its now 200 years to the day since it was signed. Written by their great, great, great grandfather, it describes how the community will live, how everyone will be equal with no one assuming superiority. It is the first time the girls have seen the document, the first time theyve heard of it. 200 years we have followed that document without even knowing we were following it, which is pretty incredible 1961 and a catastrophe that threatened the islands existence. The volcano erupted. The entire population of the island was evacuated to england. The British Government thought the islanders would stay, but as soon as they could they all went home. I think ill always be brought back to tristan in some way. I think its a great place to raise a family. And you know everyone. When i settle down ill definitely go home. Extraordinary stuff. Theresa may says britains departure date from the eu will be enshrined in law and warns she wont tolerate attempts to block the brexit process.
