There are calls for an independent inquiry after a serious data breach which saw the addresses of more than a thousand people on the new year honours list made publicly available online. The files included the details of celebrities , senior Police Officers and politicians one of those affected, Iain Duncan Smith, called the leak a complete disaster. Katharine da costa reports. More than 1000 people will be honoured, among them celebrities, sport sports, and politicians, including musician sir eltonjohn, cricketer ben stokes, former Tory Party Leader Iain Duncan Smith, and former director of Public Prosecutions alison saunders. There are also security, counter terror, and justice personnel, as well as chief constables. But a list containing their home addresses was accidentally published by the government on friday evening. Iain duncan smith, who is due to be knighted, described the data breach as a complete disaster. He told the sunday times. New Data Protection laws were brought in last year, giving regulators more power to penalise those who fail to protect personal data. The Cabinet Office confirmed the list was only visible for an hour. In a statement, it said. The former head of the civil service, lord kersla ke, is leading calls for an independent enquiry. The Cabinet Office says it has report the matter to the Information Commissioners Office and is looking into how this happened. This is a well established process that has gone on for you also an urgent is definitely needed. Date data experts warn the government could face legal action, notjust from the data watchdog, but from those whove seen their personal details leaked. Information many may have wanted to keep private. Several people have been stabbed at a rabbis home in the state of new york. At least five people, alljewish, have been taken to hospital. The new york mayor, bill de blasio, says he will not allow events like this to become the new normal and will step up security around jewish houses of worship. The suspect fled but police said he was later taken into custody. Earlier, david hoffman, a localjournalist, described the attack. People were being stabbed, were being hit. Somebody that i know personally, very, very well, an older man, was stabbed. He is now in surgery in a critical condition. Everyone is praying for him. And then supposedly some of the people in the house started to throw things at this attacker and they forced him out of the house and then they chased him and he tried to go into the synagogue next door but they locked the doors. More than a quarter of a Million People have signed a petition demanding that sydney cancels its traditional new years eve firework display and spends the money on tackling australias bush fires instead. Dozens of fires are raging across the country with the largest one on the outskirts of sydney. Will batchelor reports. Its one of the biggest and most spectacular parties on earth. Sydneys new year firework display. But now the citys authorities are facing growing calls to cancel the event and divert the money it costs, around £3 million, towards tackling both severe Drought Conditions and the dozens of bushfires which are raging across australia. Close to 300,000 people have signed an online petition, which says the fireworks may traumatise some people who are dealing with enough smoke in the air. Sydneys lord mayor has said the show, which is planned and paid for months in advance, must go on. However, there are reports the display could still be cancelled at the last minute because of the risk that it may spark new bushfires. If they do change their mind it wont be the first fire related u turn by the australian authorities. The prime minister, scott morrison, has now approved plans to pay compensation of around £3,000 to some volunteer firefighters in New South Wales an idea he initially rejected. Will bachelor, bbc news. Phil mercer is in the suburb of manly. Phil, this row appears to show the tensions what signal does ascend if they go ahead and they dont . De maia said the fireworks are a symbol of unity that you will come from around the world to see this annual extravaganza. The mayor. This year there will be one hundred thousand pyrotechnics and devices and the mayor said this is bringing australia and the rest of the world together, that it is a symbol of hope that most go ahead and she said all the money or most of it has already been spent so certainly many australians believe its an insult to people affected by the bushfires that they will go ahead. Weve been speaking many tourists here today we are very much of the view that the show must go on so barring catastrophic changes here on new years eve, that spectacular display will proceed. In the meantime, the authorities are warning of severe to extreme fire conditions and heat across south eastern australia well millions of people live, that includes the state of south australia, tasmania, victoria and here in New South Wales. Safe to say in the next 25 and 48 hours, many australians and International Visitors on their holidays will be heading to the beach to escape extreme heat that is coming this way. The Authorities Say the final days of 2019, especially here in south eastern australia, could be very uncomfortable and very dangerous for parts of the country. The lawyer representing the family of a british father and his two children who drowned in a resort Swimming Pool in spain on Christmas Eve wants a more detailed investigation into their deaths. The hotel on the Costa Del Sol insists the pool was working normally but the mother of the children says all three could swim. Helena wilkinson has more. This is gabriel diya with his nine year old daughter, comfort. They both died, as did her brother, praise emmanuel. Mr diyas wife and the childrens mother, 0lubunmi diya, says all three could swim and suggested there was something wrong with the pool. Police say there was nothing wrong with it, but the family lawyer has questioned that. Translation if the Spanish Police can give us a possible cause for this tragic incident, we might do a parallel investigation with experts to find out what happened. Its very rare for three people to die in the centre of a Swimming Pool especially in the case of a tall, hefty man. Earlier, the resort where the family was staying issued a new statement, disputing mrs diyas claims. It said they were directly at odds with the findings of the Police Report and it makes clear, it said, that their exhaustive investigations have confirmed the pool was working normally and there was no malfunction of any kind. It was on Christmas Eve when the family all went to this pool. Mrs diya says her children went in by the steps but found themselves dragged into the middle, where it was deeper. Her husband jumped in to help. Not long after, all three were underwater. The police have described it as a tragic accident. But the familys suggestion of carrying out their own investigation shows just how dissatisfied they are. Helena wilkinson, bbc news. Big ben will bring in the new decade in traditonal style on new years eve taking a break from renovations for one night only. For two years, its been mostly silent to undergo repairs but work has been going on behind the scenes to make sure the famous bongs sound at midnight. To check everything works, clock mechanics will be testing the bell regularly, starting this afternoon. I hope they work, it would be embarrassing for the poor man or woman in charge of they didnt sound. They have a couple of days to practice. Its just sound. They have a couple of days to practice. Itsjust gone sound. They have a couple of days to practice. Its just gone eight to 8 10am. Knife crime in england and wales rose to record levels this year, and today the government is announcing how funding to tackle Youth Violence will be spent. £35 million pounds, which has already been announced, will go towards setting up 18 Violence Reduction units, which will bring together police, local govenment and Community Leaders to target crime at its root causes. John poynton works for the charity redthread, which intervenes when young people are caught up in knife crime. He joins us now from our london newsroom. A very good morning to you. Just explain briefly what exactly it is you do and what you see, and how this money might help. We are a use Charity Works partnership with the nhs embedding youth workers alongside doctors and nurses in a e departments to meet young people at that moment of crisis where people come out as victims of crisis and we see that as a teachable moment can enable and empower the young person to help break that cycle of violence that they are the community might find themselves in. Each of those people as an individual and the reason theyve ended up in the position may be very varied. How would this impact our lives . M position may be very varied. How would this impact our lives . It is crucial that, alongside policing and criminal justice crucial that, alongside policing and criminaljustice interventions, we look at prevention and early and you look at prevention and early and you look at, this is a small part of the jigsaw puzzle but Public Health approaches to tackling violence are all society has to be involved in tackling this sort of issue we are seeing in communities. Why the government is talking about Early Intervention what you get some of these examples. It would be £9 million over the space of two years for these units. Is that enough . The numbers are what they are but what is really important is Early Intervention and prevention is back on the table, it is what people have been talking about and agreeing is needed for moving forward undoubtedly if we want to stamp out violence across our society, we need to not just be violence across our society, we need to notjust be looking at young people, we need to be looking at all forms of violence, not pigeonholing it as knife crime your Domestic Violence there, or sexual violence. We need to be tackling all forms of violence so more money need to be committed not just year on violence so more money need to be committed notjust year on year but over a long term to make sure that actually we are able to deal with the causes, and the causes that create violence that we are seeing and have seen over this christmas holiday. Weve seen the government promised the easing of austerity over the coming years but what specific areas would you like to see an increase in spending in order to get to the art of the issues that are affecting the people you see day m, are affecting the people you see day in, day out . Everyone has been talking about the same things, the fa ct talking about the same things, the fact that we need to be looking at the young people as children and ensuring they all have the opportunity to be healthy, safe and happy. It is not Rocket Science in many ways, this is about ensuring that every child has a safe and sta ble that every child has a safe and stable home environment, in the community. This is about education and ensuring schools are able to support the children that are in their care. This is about ensuring that everyone has easy access to health care. I think what the funding is about is making sure everybody is in the same room having conversations, looking at the prevention and the Early Intervention, and not just prevention and the Early Intervention, and notjust talking about policing and arresting our way out of it which all of our senior Police Officers across the country have known and be talking about for a long time now but there is no way you can arrest your way out of the problems with yourselves in and we have to work together. Do you welcome the money is a start . We wa nt to welcome the money is a start . We want to congratulate you on your 0be for services to young victims of violence in the new year honours list. Slightly double edged because of this data breach for some, how are you feeling . Im absolutely delighted im really proud to accept this honour because it reflects the amazing work that my team do they income a day out in ensuring that young people are healthy, safe and happy and it reflects on the partnerships that you have with amazing doctors and nurses across the hospital that he worked in, and its all about this partnership so, yes, very reason and proud to make very pleased and proud to accept the 0be, what was the rest of the question . Just your thoughts on the question . Just your thoughts on the data breach that has been widely covered. It has been widely covered. Its covered. It has been widely covered. Its more of a concern for celebrities and perhaps those in the military but obviously for us, putting out our Office Address is a great way for people, if they want to make new year donations to charities like us, its a great way for them to do so. Like my congratulations on the amazing work you do and thank you very much. Shall we check in with the weather and see whats going on over the next few days . Weve got new years eve, fireworks and all sorts of things going on. Susan. Good quite quiet over the next few days but there will be some subtle changes. We will go as far as to say scotla nd changes. We will go as far as to say scotland and Northern Ireland at the moment, partly due to this air, if you follow the amber ribbon behind, it comes all the way from the tropics and is sitting across scotla nd tropics and is sitting across scotland and Northern Ireland overnight, keeping temperatures up in the mid teens. And it will be a mild day here some rain to come for the highlands, the northern and Western Isles, some sunshine as we head through the south with prospects looking better for and sunny weather and a bit of dry air drifting across from the continent, looking to break up the cloud across the south east and east anglia, leaving sunshine for northern england. Temperature is quite remarkable again for scotland and Northern Ireland as we head into the day. A couple of degrees up on the overnight temperatures but unseasonably warm for error example around. Through unseasonably warm for error example through the evening and overnight, it wont be quite as warm. The south east, keeping clear spells here and you could see temperatures dipping down to single figures as low as just to celsius in norwich. Still very mild for scotland and Northern Ireland, cloud tending to increase by the end of the night and some rain moving on as we see this weather front finally starting to move its way south across the uk. Making progress by the end of monday, through monday daytime, pretty slow as it drifts its way south across scotland, a much greater story for the north east of scotland, writer for the northern and Western Isles and a little bit of rain across Northern Ireland through the afternoon. Some patchy cloud around england and wales but fine era temperatures again in double figures. The front really gets a wriggle on overnight monday into tuesday, new years day, new years eve, the frontage to the south of the uk are years eve making it a little grey. Some light drizzle around the new years eve, like christmas, i go temperatures return to a more average spell for the time of year. Going into the evening part of new years eve, the one they concern we have is the potentially dense patches of fog forming that really could be quite persistent even on into new years day but it should be a fine night across the uk, and temperatures managing to stayjust above across the uk, and temperatures managing to stay just above freezing which is good news if youre staying up which is good news if youre staying up to what if fireworks past midnight. Thank you. A soggy, foggy night fireworks. Nazir afzal, who is the former chief prosecutor for the north west, is here to tell us whats caught his eye. We were just talking to somebody who works in a Violent Crime charity saying prevention is better than joe. That is why we need to do something about it. The coast of keeping a prisoner injail is something about it. The coast of keeping a prisoner in jail is £118 per day, which is £40,000 per year. The government was my commitment is to increase the length of sending sing so it willjust get worse. Ive said it on this programme before, prison seems like a revolving door. You go in, spend a few months to yea rs, you go in, spend a few months to years, come out, reoffend, go back in so unless you spend money on rehabilitation of prevention, which is what youve just talked to us about, you will not solve the problem, it will be an enormous cost going up. The highest cost in europe now and that will only get worse. I spoken to people working on prisons who do coaching and they are under resourced, people looked after do not get the opportunity to do any learning or anything that will educate them to be able to come out and be much more productive and that is where we need to be spending money. There are many success stories. Timson is as a good example who have a lot of places around prison that do great work with prisoners, they do not teach them how to make keys, which is a good thing in prisons but they do work within a make of them skills that will be a phenomenal use after they leave. They do, and they give them suits and all see up there with job interviews. Amazing thing thatjohn timson is doing. This is in the 0bserver, this is what you picked out. The eggs are a word. Young actor rowan atkinson. Rowan williams, sorry, is made a very valid point. Williams, sorry, is made a very valid point. Rowan atkinson. Rowan williams. It is enshrined in law. It is britain was my commitment to the world to improve poverty and create greater self reliance. 0ver the last years, there has been a move away from that. 30 of the budget is no longer spent. There was talk of moving International Development back to the foreign 0ffice development back to the Foreign Office as it was a few years ago so it is much more of a Foreign Office tool. Rowan williams is saying, and i agree with that, it is notjust about security or improving and tackling terrorism or helping improve their policing. You can tackle those issues through the grassroots or helping countries, to poverty, dealing with corruption in some countries but ensuring that people are much more resilient and thatis people are much more resilient and that is how we ultimately become safer. Ive a fair amount of work around the these days and our reputation is second to none. They see what the United Kingdom is doing in their countries as being something they really value and we need to do more of that, particularly as we move out of the european union. It can be tricky for the electorate when you talk big numbers. Trade will help, not only security but the education system. So many leaders studied in the uk and it will help us in the long run. Now for something completely different. What do you make of this. Treatment for animals struggling with stress, depression and 0cd goes up with stress, depression and 0cd goes up 50 on last year. Do do we with stress, depression and 0cd goes up 50 on last year. Do we have more stress better are we more stressed about our pets . Some will ensure medical treatment for anxiety of the issues you just raised, they say three quarters of pet owners are really concerned about not only Mental Health, it is not Mental Health but the behaviours of their pets, cats, dogs, rabbits. There is a lovely line about dogs increasingly barking at strangers, i a lwa ys increasingly barking at strangers, i always thought they did. Cats are scratching the furniture that. As the owner of each of our, i need therapy, not the chihuahua. From my perspective, premiums are going up, which means more people are taking advantage of the fact that they need this kind of treatment and clearly if the public are more concerned about it, something needs to be done about it, something needs to be done about it, something needs to be done about it and that is what the insurers are talking about. To be clear, pet therapy is not a dog lying on sofas. Youll make they do rely on sofas but i imagine this is not that. It can be medicating them on some ways. It is a serious problem in some ways and out they are making the point that it is costing more money in terms of pet insurance with more claims being made. Interesting. My brother and his wife adopted a cat and you are amazing that munich happy fur calmly, so it certainly works. Kurt listens for rural india. Tell me more. You might call the midwife thats very soon on bbc. Care lessons. Call the midwife starts very soon. Lessons. Call the midwife starts very soon. India, as most countries do, hasa very soon. India, as most countries do, has a significant problem with child death. Birth death etc. One of the concerns they have is nurses need to be much more compassionate, less frustrated by the lack of resources , less frustrated by the lack of resources, more patient focused and they are using call the midwife as an example. They are watching that to understand what it might be like and what they can learn from other experiences from midwives around the world. That makes me feel better about watching it with a box of chocolates on christmas day. I was learning something without realising it. Thank you. Happy new year to you. Might make you, too. Andy murray has just been watching call the midwife i would bet because he and his wife just had another baby. But we will be sitting watching it in britain. Three time grand slam winner andy murray is out of next months Australian Open. He had only recently returned from almost two years of hip problems, and then a pelvic injury troubled him towards the end of the season. Although murray is back on court, hes decided not to travel to australia. Instead hell continue rehab and pre season training with a view to playing an indoor event in france at the start of february. This black and white fate came courtesy of a man named graym this black and white fate came courtesy of a man named gray. It is demarai gray. That left west ham just a point above the bottom three. Relegation unthinkable for the owners. They thought they would get so much more when they hired Manuel Pellegrini won the premiership with manchester city. He spent big on the likes of Felipe Anderson and let the hammers to tenth last season but the bubble burst by late autumn. Speaking yesterday, he acknowledged the fans had reasons not to be cheerful. They deserve a better performance. Youre trying to find ways to do it. I think the players wa nt to ways to do it. I think the players want to do it but they feel the pressure on lack of confidence, lack of results is difficult. Is the time of results is difficult. Is the time of year for of results is difficult. As well as soul searching, where stan will be looking for a new guide. Elsewhere in the premier League Manchester united moved up to fifth in the table with a two nil win at burnley. A few moments ago they were 131 1. That is the sport. Stay with us, headlines coming up shortly. Hello, this is breakfast with Nina Warhurst and victoria fritz. Its 8. 30, heres a summary of this mornings main news. There are calls for an independent inquiry after a serious data breach which saw the addresses of more than 1,000 people on the new year honours list made publicly available online. The files included the details of celebrities, senior Police Officers and politicians one of those affected, Iain Duncan Smith called the leak a complete disaster. The Cabinet Office has apologised and told the bbc it was looking into how this happened. In the last hour, the former head of the civil service, lord kersla ke, stressed the importance of an investigation. It isa it is a serious, and extraordinary breach. This is a well established process that has gone on the same way for years. I think an urgent investigation is certainly needed. It is likely to be human error, as has been suggested. We need to know how well staff were trained about the importance of maintaining security. Where they briefed on the potential consequences if this information was released . Several people have been stabbed at a rabbis home in the state of new york. At least five people, who were alljewish, have been taken to hospital. The new york mayor, bill de blasio, says he will not allow events like this to become the new normal and will step up security around jewish houses of worship. The lawyer representing the family of a british father and his two children who drowned in a resort Swimming Pool in spain on Christmas Eve wants a more detailed investigation into their deaths. A statement from the Spanish Police said initial evidence found the incident was a tragic accident caused by lack of expertise in swimming. The hotel insists the pool was working normally but the mother of the children says all three could swim. Those are the main stories this morning. Thats it from breakfast this morning. Dan and louise will be here from six tomorrow. Now though its time for a special interview with Megan Rapinoe. She was one of the stand out stars of the United States world cup Winning Campaign in 2019. She 5 also been an outspoken voice on equal pay, lgbt rights and politics. Shes been talking tojo currie about the issues facing the women s game on and off the pitch, and her role in that stunning world cup win. Enjoy the rest of your day, goodbye. It is our responsibility to make this world a better place. This team does an incredible job of taking that on our shoulders, understanding the position that we have and the platform that we have. The usa have won the womens world cup for a fourth time. They secured back to back titles after overpowering the netherlands. The usa have been champions in every sense with Megan Rapinoe winning the golden boot and the golden ball award for the tournaments best player. If we really want to have meaningful change, what i think is most inspiring would be if everybody other than Raheem Sterling and koulibaly if they were as outraged as racism as they were. It is a few months on from the craziness of the world cup, what has it been like for you post france . Have you been home yet, whats life like . Can you go to the supermarket and buy milk . Milk and four selfies that is sort of the accompaniment. No, i can go places. But it is like so much more. There is not really a place i am going that for the most part people dont recognise me, even if they dont say anything. You get the sort of glances around. I am also very observant, just in general, so i feel like i could feel everything around all the time. Im like, its kind of interesting. Its been totally insane. In the best way, in the most exhausting way. Hard, in ways. Travelling around. I have been home a little bit, mostly to unpack and do laundry and repack and leave again. It is kind of amazing to have the career that i have where we started at this point. It just seems like every year it is getting blown out of the water and the sport is growing so much so i have this real perspective of where things have come from, a visceral perspective of it, so knowing what we did this summer and feeling that and figuring out, you just cant help it. It feels surreal and i am awestruck by everything that has happened. Personally, i went through ten years of my career in a particular way, growing every year and whatever. But i got put on a rocketship. I am enjoying the ride but i am like, this is insane, this is crazy but in a good way. Winning back to back world cups is an incredible achievement but you also won the golden ball and the golden boot. Your luggage going home must have weighed an absolute tonne. Was there a point at the final or afterwards when they shut down the walk for you when the enormity of what you had achieved really hit home . I think coming back to new york and being in. Certainly the pre eminent city in our country, and starting to understand how other people were feeling about it, people were not like, you guys did so amazing at the world cup it was not, great job for the soccer. And having the reference of 2015, going through that, it felt like 2015 we were being celebrated winning the world cup. And this parade in particular was like, we are all celebrating. Yes, we were the vehicle for it, but it felt like everybody won the world cup, everybody had sort of this piece of it and they were invested but they also helped, and it like, it was just something that transcended so far beyond what the sport was, and we are at the epicentre of that, getting to celebrate with everyone along the Parade Ground and the city hall, wherever it may be. And that sentiment has carried on into the rest of everybodys lives. It felt like we all won. Your goal celebration in france was one of the iconic images, with the arms outspread. Talk to me about the inspiration behind that. Has it got a name, is itjust the rapinoe . A lot of people are calling it the pose. I will go with pose. I did it for the first time against australia in a friendly. 0bviously they were one of the more talked about teams heading into the world cup. They have what i consider probably the best player in the world in sam kerr, it was ridiculous. They had a lot of hype around it. It was a friendly, but it was more than that. It was time to stamp our dominance and gain that confidence heading into the world cup. So i scored the go ahead goal in the game or something. In the beginning, it was kind of like. Almost like a touch of arrogance. Like, i know you are entertained at this moment, i am entertaining you, sort of are you not entertained . Gladiatorfeel, a little bit, without the death of the gladiators. But certainly in the world cup, it was more of a defiance, but a joy as well, you will not take any of ourjoy. This is what you get, this is what you asked for, this is what you really want. Commentator rapinoe. Its in the french are left completely befuddled youre going to be like, the team got busted for celebrating too much. Everyone is like, she talks too much or whatever. But this is what you really want. And i will give it to you, and i am giving it to you, and this team is giving it to you, and you kind of like it. So it is sort of like a defiance but also playful but also, if i could have thrown a sneaky middle finger in there, i might have. It was sort of like a way to connect with the fans too in some sort of sense. Then they can do it and it means the same thing. If someone did the ronaldo, there is nothing behind it other than him. So this feels like theres more behind it that there is more to everyone. It came right after president trumps tweets at me. The semifinal, this huge game, the biggest game outside of the finals, this is the biggest game we have ever played, most important game, the fans were insane. Fans in their home country, being a home nation, it was a nice moment. You touched on the word arrogance there. Alex morgans cup of tea celebration, i dont think a cup has caused so much controversy we take our tea very seriously in england. You were accused of celebrating too much. What is the difference between confidence and arrogance . I dont know. I feel like were going to have fun. We work so hard, as every team does. We have had a lawsuit before. We were fighting for equal rights, all kinds of things. We have a very serious role to play. So it is kind of like the balance of that. When we get to be in the field, first of all, the whole point of the game is to score the goal, to win the game, so we have always done this, we have done cartwheels and when we played in the snow we did snow angels, danced and sang in microphones, everything, we want to have fun and we are going to enjoy it. And just next level trolling of the tea is so funny its so funny, especially because she is english, you are so uptight sometimes. It was so perfect. I think that, as long as we continue to do things the right way for the right reasons, i said this after the thailand game, if anybody wants to come at us for not playing the game the right way or for not being good ambassadors for the sport or doing the right thing, im happy to have that conversation, happy to listen to them try to break that one down, but i really do feel like we want to enjoy the game, this is entertainment, sport is for the love of it, but this is entertainment, and in order to become the biggest, baddest sport on the planet and the biggest, baddest team in place, lets have fun with it, why not . When that whole spat blew up, in the middle of the world cup, you were in the tournament of your life, what was that like for you . Honestly, it felt much less serious than it actually was. Logically, i understand the gravity of having a president quarrel with you. But president s do not quarrel with people over twitter, president s dont go after members of their own team and put undue pressure of them before the biggest game of the tournament and one of the biggest games of their lives. President s do not bash every single powerful woman he could possibly bash and come across. So its like hes not president ial to me. It carries so much less weight. I sort of knew it was a big deal but i did not have that, oh feeling. Like, whoa. It was pretty chill. I had amazing support within the group. All of our media and comm staff, our president was there, he was supportive of me, all of the executives and coaches, everybody. Everybody had my back and it did not become a thing within the group. I was also already scheduled to do the press conference. So me and the media team decided i would address it head on, say exactly what i want to say, the media would have asked 1,000 questions if they could have. This is exactly what i have to say and how i feel about it, so hold my beer. You have stood up for womens rights, lgbt rights, you have made a point of racial inequality, youve said you feel like you found your voice going into your 30s. What was the trigger for you to think, i will use my platform for something more than soccer, more than football . Honestly, i think very early on in this team, you realise it is not just a national team, not a team that gets together, we have always fought for so much more. That is in the thread of the team. Very early on, we were going through bargaining negotiations for our contracts, understanding that we are this unique travelling team that represents america all over the country, we are charged with inspiring and motivating young girls and boys and people everywhere. So from the first bit you are on the team, you realise it is much bigger. Ahead of the olympics, i decided to come out, it just started to feel weird i was not out. I didnt not want to be out, but im not. I did that. So much positive impact and feedback from that. Helping to move that conversation forward. In that, asking people to be my ally and to support me does not mean you are gay or you have to fully understand it in the way that i do but i need you to be my ally, i need everyone. So fast forward to 2016, Colin Kaepernick is kneeling and watching and hearing everything that is happening, immediately, im like, i can help, i have got your back, i dont know exactly what it is like to be you, but i believe you in what you are saying and i understand that, in order for it to change, it will have to be more than the person taking on the responsibility, it has to be other people, people like me who had the privilege that i do. That was an easy decision for me. Going through all of the backlash and craziness and hatred, from that only solidified my understanding of myself and the power in my voice. And ijust think everyone has a responsibility to do whatever it is they can in the most impactful way that they can to make the world a better place. So i am semi famous person on a very famous team on a very successful that has media access every single day and we are a growing platform all the time. It is like, this is the most impactful way i can run in. To me, everything is connected, whether its fighting for equal pay, equal access to sport, racial inequalities, police brutality, lgbtq rights, its all the same thing, it is one grouping in power, overlording over everybody else, trying to keep everybody else out of power and not really sharing in the wealth and not just wealth and money, but the wealth of what is to live a really full life where you actually feel free and have the liberty to do whatever you want. So i think it is kind of still evolving, but i started to realise at a pretty young age, its actually all the exact same thing, its just in a different way with different people and people deal with different things, but we all need to be in it together in order for it to change. You sit here now. Youre confident, you look comfortable within your own skin, have you always been like this, what were you like at school . Middle school and high school was weird, i didnt know i was gay, and as soon as i figured that out, that was obvious, thanks, nobody for telling me that would have been a nice little shout but growing up, middle school and high school is awkward anyway, every single kid is so awkward like, i see them now and i think, this is the cutest thing ever. Theyre breaking out, they dont know who theyre, theyre shy, even the confident ones are shy. You have had a twin as well . She was really confident during that time. So i was like, thank god, i will follow you around. I also had sport to gain my confidence from that, that was the place where i rested my identity for those years. But growing up, i was exactly the way i am now, i went through that weird lull, we have always bounced each other perfectly, and then getting into college, after that, ifeel like i became myself. And being on a team like this, this team in particular, any sports team especially with girls can give them that confidence, but this team in particular, whenever youre elite as a woman, you are pretty much alone or with only a couple of other people. Usually youre alone. And so to be able to grow up and mature on a team that has 23 other women who were just as elite as you, just as confident, we give each other that space and build each other up, we challenge each other, but to us its normal to be big and bold and wild like this. So i guess when you take one of us out, and were doing that, people say, you dont see women act like this for us it is normal because this is how we are all the time, this is how we grew up, empowering each other, and naturally im a confident person. And im very thankful for that. Whos your number one sporting hero growing up . I feel like its two. For the sure the 99 team. That blew open all of our worlds at the time, girls who played soccer with 100,000 people watching a final, it transcended sport in such a big way, theyre our blueprint on and off the field for what it means to be on our team but how to shake things up on how to continue to grow the sport. And michaeljordan was always myjam. Hejust had such a swagger about him. Just the way that he played, the swagger and and the confidence and the style and creativity, everything was top. Tell me about one breakthrough moment or crossroads moment in your career that has impacted you. Probably the most impactful was tearing my acl in 2015. I made it back to the olympics but was terrible. I feel like i should not have been on that roster. I dont think i deserved that very much. The team didnt do well so i was very disappointed. And i wasnt myself at all. I was a shell of a player. What i had to do to get back to my old self. And in the process of committing myself to coming back, i blew past where i ever was before so i feel like that was a really pivotal moment, meeting sue, my girlfriend at that time, she is like benjamin button, i dont know what shes doing but whatever it is, i want to do that i changed up my training and eating habits, my level of professionalism. Im definitely not in this position without all of that, maybe i would still be on the team but not like this. Whats the one thing you are still desperate to achieve in your life . I guess in a footballing sense, no one has ever done world cup 0lympics back to back. Its very difficult for a reason. Once you win a world cup, there are a million things you have to do, celebrating, you dont have that moment after the world cup where you commit to win the olympics and nothing else matters. Were doing all these other things. That would be incredible. I think we have a Good Opportunity and the right mix of things, we have a new coach, so that puts a little extra anxiety, but in a good way. You know that kind of like. 0bviously, hes not won anything at International Level so he is super motivating and all of us feel. Some people who may be did not play as much of a fresh opportunity, if you play a lot, you have got to keep on top of your game to make sure you are there. So in a footballing sense, thats super motivating for all of us. In life, oh, god i mean, everything equal pay would be a really nice one. That would be a nice Little Cherry on the top of this year, if we could ever get to a deal or whenever that happens. In general, continuing to push the game forward, continuing to grow the game and challenge. Weve done everything to prove everything. I dont think any female professional football has anything left to prove. Its just everyone else figuring it out. Young girls today, even young women, its hard on them, there is pressure from social media and everywhere, what is your message to young girls growing up in Todays Society about finding their identity and voice . Ijust learned very early on, after a game, you want to have a big pat on the back, you want to have someone ciush you, go on your comments. Its a made up world. Its not real feedback. So lean on the people that are actually real, tangible, in front of you your friends. Social media is one thing. Its good in a lot of ways but its horrible for kids. They are already dealing with so much. And never let anyone else define you or your dreams or what you want to be. Especially now, there are so many more opportunities and lanes for people to be in that theres an opportunity. Theres space for you to be exactly who you are and whatever you want to be, so dont let anyone ever tell you what that is. Good morning.
