Today on inside politics, the United States investigator vus donald trump. The grand jury meets again and the nation is on pins and needles. Plus a new National Poll shows donald trump and Joe Biden Running even and as of now, criminal indictments have not tanked trumps chances of become ing the once and future president if hes on the ballot. And its the Vice President on the line. A former Business Partner tells congress that hunter biden put his father on speakerphone 20 times. Democrats say it was part of an illusion. Republicans see it as a biden lie. Im dana bash. Lets go behind the headlines and inside politics. Up first, we are closely watching for any indicators that a federal indictment against the former president is coming. The grand jury that will make that decision whether or not to charge donald trump with january 6 related crimes is back in today. Cnns Katelyn Polantz is live outside the federal courthouse here in washington. What are you seeing there at this hour . Reporter this courthouse is collectively holding its breath to see what happens with the grand jury today. The grand jury that has been investigating january 6th and the 2020 election with the the help of prosecutors from the special counsels office directing all those witnesses and evidence before the grand jury for months and months, they are in today. This is two weeks after donald trump told he was very likely to be indicted for his activity after the election, as he was trying to maintain a grasp on the presidency when he had lost the election in multiple Battleground States and ultimately the Electoral College vote. So theres a lot of anticipation here. Theres been a lot of momentum in the previous weeks putting the grand jury in a position where they are very likely to be asked by the Justice Department to look at that indictment that they prepare d against donald trump and to potentially approve it and send it into the court system as formal charges against the former president. We do not know what the grand jury is doing at this moment. Only that they are here in this building. We have not seen any prosecutors from the special counsels office on the ground yet. That doesnt mean they are not here. They have plenty of ways to get into this building. And the grand jury thmss operate in total secrecy when they are convened. So we will not know exactly what comes from the grand jury until theres a choice made by both the Justice Department and the court to make public an indictment, but we are waiting to see not just what happens with the grand jury, but what exactly the Justice Department wants to do here with a possible case against donald trump related to the 2020 election. The investigation has been sweeping and theres a lot of ways they can put a case together, whether its against donald trump or many others. So we need to keep our eyes on the court today. We are glad you are there to do that. Appreciate it. Now to the raw politics and a raw morning if youre sitting inside bidens reelection headquarters. The New York Times confirms the current reality. Donald trump can win a rematch with joe biden, the top line number, biden, 43 , trump, 43 . The dead lock race raises questions and the impact of indictments on the former presis in a potential General Election. The poll finds both men are unpopular with american voters. 41 hold a favorable opinion of the former president. Only 39 currently approve of joe bidens job performance. The poll does show modes improvements for biden on key metrics compared with a year ago. Last yr only 13 said the country was on the right track. Now that numr is 23 . A better but still deeply unsettling number, if you are the sitting president is who is asking for four more years. Were going to talk more about this. Theres a lot to unpack inside this poll. This is important. This is a National Poll. It is a snapshot of the National Mood. This is not how in America President s are elected. President s are elected state by state. So the feeling of voters in these key states matters more as we get closer to the election, but having an idea of what the National Mood is very instructive. Lets go a little bit deeper into this particularly as we were referring to Katelyn Polantz being outside the grand jury and trying to get a sense of whats going to happen there to look at the potential impact when it comes to the national sentiment. Donald trump committed serious crimes. 51 , threatened democracy, 53 . A majority saying two things. Donald trump committed serious crimes, a majority of registered voters saying he threatened democracy, and yet its a tight race. Not only is it effective, its instructive, its not irrelevant, its also a National Poll 15 months before an election. So theres a lot of time here. I would note one more thing about this poll. Its not particularly new information. It shows a remarkably consistent picture for months now. This has been a margin of error race. This potential rematch between biden and trump. This is yet another poll in a litany of polls that have suggested that. So the question is then why . Why did all the Economic Indicators are so good for the Biden White House that inflation is easing, that the fed is going to pause on the Interest Rate hike. Donald trump is the leading republican nominee. They think donald trump and the matchup against truch makes for extremism. If thats working in bidens favor and still a dead heat race, you have to ask the question about why. If you look at biden, he does well on the web as youre talking, i want to put the data 7 to help bolster the point. Suburban women he does well among black voters. Slipping a lite bit among latino voters. And so those are the coalitions. Some of the differences have to do with how people see this country. Are they comfortable with some of the changes that are going on in this country in terms of the racial changes, the expanded rights of lgbtq americans. That is sort of the fault line that we see in this country. That explains this sorting between the two parties. And we just said we dont know entirely why. One of the potential clues is if you look at the president s colt polls, right now, 50 say they would be okay with Somebody Else. But if you look inside those nurnls numbers about why that is there, what is so interesting is the age number. Thats the biggest Contributing Factor to the question of why people inside the Democratic Party if they want Somebody Else, what the reason for that is. Which is why you hear P Percolating people who say i would challenge him if he couldnt run. Which you heard from the congressman last week. You hear that kind of around the margins. But this idea of bidens age, any democrats you talk to, they are worried. But one of the interesting things in the times write up was how many voters are saying i dont want to vote for joe biden, but im not going to vote for donald trump. But another thing thats interesting, not even from these numbers, when you looked at the smalldollar donors, the enthusiasm gap, thats going to be the issue in a General Election. When you get down to it, how many people want to run out and vote. Thats not the case that were seeing. They are not excited about this. The other thing thats interesting in this poll is what we refer to as the double haters. Those that are just not interested. 14 do not choose a side. They wouldnt vote or look for a third party option. And when you look at those, because of everything you were just saying, they found that maybe slight advantage biden with that group of the ones that are displeased with both. Because of compare me against the alternative and thats what you hear. One says to the New York Times, biden is not going to harm the country as much as i believe trump would. Then another, its basically like i dont have another choice because i dont feel comfortable not voting. Another, joe biden seems less mentally capable age wise, but trump is just evil. These are really good bumper stickers. One talks about not necessarily be enthusiastic about biden, but shes going to vote any way. A vote still counts the same. Everybody standby. This is one of the reasons why im sure donald trump want ed to run for president. Facing these legal indictments hanging over his head, its convenient to have this. How Melania Trump is involved here, i dont really get it. I dont know what that company is, i dont know if shes consulting them. I dont know whats going on there. But i do know she doesnt seem to be involved in the campaign that much. I think you have some of Donald Trumps opponents making this an issue, this idea that heres this guy thats a billionaire but looking to ordinary americans who are spending in their 20 or 50. And they are paying his legal bills. Its not really booking in terms of Landing Folks or preventing them from sending money. Totally. Theres so many fascinating subplots when it comes to this race. And some of it is born out in the cruxes to various candidates and their pacs and superpacs. Were mentioning donald trump. His soninlaw has given money to his entities. As has his father, charlie kushner. Chles was somebody who was put in jail by Chris Christie, look tt. Chris christie got money from the kushner. Murray is Jared Kushners uncle. And hes also somebody who helped Chris Christie put Charles Kushner in jail when crhristie was u. S. Attorney. He was a key part of that investigation. And basically, not flipped, but just helped christie get his brother nailed. The Family History of the kushners and crhristie is just fascinating. Jah ved kushner ask christie had to navigate each other, but he was operate ing in the trump ort adviser. Red kushner was a senior theres no love lost. Scaramucci was a supporter at the beginning of the Trump Administration and hes now giving 100,000, a big check to the christie superpac. I want to move on to the cash on hand, when we were looking at the overall amount of money that these superpacks and these are the big organizations that can raise unlited nmoney. They are not supposed to coordinate with the campaigns themselves, but a lot of these candidates are relying heavily on them when their own money is sort of dwindling. That definely is true for n desantis. His superpac is sitting on a lot of money. 97 million, and its interesting that youre seeing his campaign now attending events. Thats who they are leaning on because he also had quite the burn rate because of all the staff they employed. But were just going to see more of this. Youre seeing it with some of the other candidates to keep their name out there, even if thr not pulling in the same money from their individual Leadership Pacs. Neither of us are shocked that republicans and democrats were out there claiming victory following this testimony Behind Closed Doors by archer. If you look at the substance of what we are learning about what archer actually told the committee, it seems pretty clear that both parties also agree d that he did not deliver the kind of impeachment worthy evidence that republicans were looking for from their witness. Now what we do know is that archer did not provide a direct link between joe biden, the president , and Hunter Bidens foreign Business Dealings nor have any knowledge of this bribery scheme, something thats the foundation of a claim that republicans have been touting for months without evidence to support it. The most controversial piece of testimony seems to center around the 20plus calls where joe biden was put on speakerphone and while hunter biden was surrounded by these Business Partners. Democrats say that archer told the committee that business was never discussed during these calls. They were more like pleasantries and the weather. Republicans have not contradict ed that claim, but dismissed it as unbelievable, even though it is based on testimony from their witness. So all in all, we are looking at these two conflicting narratives that come from the same piece of testimony and the same witness. Archer, for his part, his lawyer released a statement saying all he didas exact ly what we said he would. Show up and answer the questions put to him honestly and completely. Archer shared the truth with the committee, and we will lead to them and others to decide what to do with it. In the aftermath of yesterdays testimony, republicans making clear they have no intention to stop investigating. Both hunter biden and visavis joe biden, they have announced a new inquiry into the plea agreement, so republicans making clear their intentions are to keep Investigate Ing Hunter Bid and President Biden. We have been outside so many closeddoor hearings and tried to get information, and it is not surprising that republicans come out and say, aha, we have the smoking gun and democrats say that didnt happen. To me, what is a bit surprising is that the republicans have been sort of pounding their chests about this. Then when this actual star witness comes, there was like one member in the room on the republican side. Comer, the chairman, wasnt even there. They had staff there, but i think reveals if it was important, they would have been there. Its all about the narrative rather than the actual testimony. Yes, there was the dress is blue or white, but coming out and listening to the same testimony, but it seems as long as they can go on cable news and say their peace, particularly on the republican side because they have been pushing this narrative about hunter biden as the smoking gun to take down joe biden and impeach him, that, to me, this wasnt a priority. We all know members of congress. If its important, they will be there. Congressman of new york was in the room and went on Anderson Cooper last night. I want to play a little bit of that interview. The fact that he spoke to Business Associates of hunter biden to say, hello, to have small talk, casual conversation is not evidence that joe biden or hunter biden did anything wrong. Why was hunter biden having his dad, who was a very powerful person, on speakerphone during some business with Business Associates in the room . It could appear shady at the very least . To be clear, it was social dinners that he was having with his Business Associates, when he would occasionally put his dad on the phone. He did this about 20 times over 10 years. And this is someone who was speaking to his father every day. Thats the question that anderson asked about the fact that doesnt it appear shady . Does that mean that the president was involved in Hunter Bidens Business Dealings, no, but we all understand washington, and we all understand this a lot of these relationships operate in the gray areas intentionally. Especially when you have somebody who is either related to a famous person or powerful person or used to work for a powerful person, you want your clients to know that you can get them on the phone. My only question around this is what impact does this story have on voters . Thats the big thing. Republicans are investing heavily in it. Is it something that just the Republican Base or potentially painting a different picture of joe biden, who will be on the ballot. I dont think theres a voter in america who doesnt believe that hunter biden was involved in Business Dealings because hes joe bidens bkid. I dont think theres a person that doesnt believe that already. But the fact that he may put his dad on the phone, thats a lot of smoke, but i have not yet seen Anything Dish dont think our reporting indicates that theres fire somewhere yet that we have seen as it relates to joe biden. Well see more, because they are not letting go of this investigation, what comes out here. Im dubious that this is something that is going to persuade the decisive voters in this election to change their perception about joe biden. But well see. I totally agree with you. Because a lot of republicans like to operate inside the what aboutism land and when things like this happen, they say twotiered justice system, we should point out that the people in the trump white house, a lot of people did very well for themselves inside the trump white house. So its not as if that would be something that would be surprising or not contradictory. I think americans remember very well that the trump kids were very successful, some worked in the white house. Kushner, obviously, worked in the white house. They have benefitted greatly from President Trump being president , and republicans didnt have anything to say about that when that was going on. Republicans are going to keep at it. They have been at this for many, many months. This idea that biden is the hit of some biden crime family, i think in many ways, this was a bit of a dud. Its what you would expect. Hes had some Business Meeting or dinner and his dad calls and hes like, hi, dad. Yeah, im sure that biden traded on his dads fame ask his power and his name, but still, as of yet, comer can get on tv all he want and talk about were going to see if theres evidence out there, but as of now, they dont have anything that looks re remotely like a smoking gun to tie President Biden to hunter biden. You want to read a statement from the white house counsels ofce he said, instead of continuing to waste time and resources on this evidencefree wild goose chase, they should work with the president on the issues that actually impact americans daily lives. Here to share his insight is a pollster who recently traveled to iowa and spoke with conservative voters there. Thank you so much for sharing what you learned. Whats The Big Picture take away . Whats your assessment of the field in iowa, because thats where you were . Its different in iowa than new hampshire. The voters are different. Iowa is much more faith based, more morals and values. New hampshire is much more economically based. Its a financial conservative electorate. In iowa, which were going to hear from, the voters like donald trump. They think hes a victim. They think hes being persecuted is the word i would use. That said, theres a lot of them looking for Somebody Else right now because they dont want to relitigate what has happened over the last seven years. They dont believe in these indictments, but think dont want that to be a side show. They want to move ahead rather than looking back ward. Lets lockically at the former president and the support, before we get to the f. The support that he has nationally has grown. 12 points since february. Ron dent, who was just right behind him at a time is now even further behind him. Who are these people who arent part and maybe necessarily of that trump org, the fifth avenue republicans that he famously said i could shoot somebody on fifth avenue and those people would support me. But the people on top of that look ing at everything going on that happened on january 6th, they are saying, okay, ill throw my support behind donald trump. The less educated, the more likely you are to support donald trump. Lower income, people unemployed at some point in the last five years. Its a socioeconomic level that was once a democratic voter, which is quite interesting. The people who have come over to the gop gave them the majority in 2016. A lot of them, maybe 15 have been voting democrat in the past. They were simply frustrated, fed up. They feel ignore d, forgotten, even betrayed. Theres a level of anger that brought them to donald trump because he represented and o offered to be their voice. And to speak for them and what has happened is that group has actually grown over time. And desantis, from the opening of his campaign, has simply not appealed to them. Heres someone with a strong record in florida. The voters looked at this and said why are you weaponizing government against companies you dont agree with . Why are you taking such an extreme position on abortion when your son is a kmbs conservative. There are issues that are driving voters away from desantis at the very moment that so many of these iowa voters are looking for change. I just want to quickly ask you about something that you said at the beginning. I remember seeing you in iowa in 2015 and 2016 election cycle. We were watching donald trump. One of the questions then was whether or not this evangelical republican voting base would support somebody like donald trump. The answer was almost. He almost won, but he didnt. Now youre saying that he does have support in iowa. There are lots of alternatives, who are traditionally, fundamentally evangelical candidates. Theres mike pence, tim scott, and yet they are trailing so far behind donald trump there. The reason they are trailing is because evangelical committee, who i talked to in this focus group, held by the family leader, evangelical Community Feels attacked. They feel like they themselves are not being treated fairly. They see trump act this way and they think he speaks for them. Lets listen to one. This is a man by the anymore of dan, who was a republican voter in iowa. What would you tell President Trump . Thank you for continuing to take the hit and continuing to fight buzz he doesnt have to. He can leave. So thank you for sticking in and helping us get through. Its amazing that they appreciate his tough talk. I would not have thought this when we talked in 2015. I now feel this in 2023. They want someone who is going to stand up and say joe biden is wrong. Joe biden is corrupt. They want a fighter, not a conciliator. Theres a question of eligibility. Thats what they want in the shortterm. Who can beat joe biden i want to listen to a woman you spoke with as part of The Focus Group that you did in iowa. Its a very solid base, but that base is not enough to get him elected. You have to get other people. I dont think trump, everybody thats on the trump train or never getting on the trump train again. And the base is very solid, but its not enough to beat biden. Thats what i hear is again and again. They are so afraid of giving joe biden four more years. For some its because of his age. Ohs its because of his policies. And you dont necessarily identify themselves as republicans. They are closely identified with conservative. How much did this notion come up . The question of whether donald trump is effectible in a General Election. As part of a Decision Maker for these republicans. Its a deciding factor for a lot of them, but in the end, they desperate ly want to go back. They want to have the benefits of the last four years.
