He went on to law school where he met his white his wife april. He was one of the world greatest leaders by fortune magazine. Recognized by the obama administration. He believes that health care should be a right for every american. [applause] and that hyper policy and hyper partisan politics a bit of washington, d. C. For too long. He was the first democratic candidate for president to visit all of 99 tallies and started to send a message. Mr. Delaney thanks for coming out. I want to thank our host. Thank you for having us. Particular, trinity. Who made this pie right here. [applause] what kind of pie is this . A cherry pie. How is that cherry pie . Outstanding. Thats all you need to know. So the classic deli from brooklyn, where did you get i grew up in california. Was one right around the corner. Available. Aced mr. Delaney thanks for having us, how is business. On myreat to be with you january this is the first day of my january tour across iowa. We are going to do 40 stops during the month of january. This is not the first time i have been dialup. Trip to iowa. H in ove over 500 events iowa since i announced my campaign. Coffee places like this, shops, living rooms, family restaurants, talking to people about issues that matter. Let me introduce myself before i get started. , did everyoneat have a good new year . Did everyone have a good holiday, Merry Christmas . I have four daughters, we were all together for the holidays. My oldest daughter just got married. This was the first holiday with my soninlaw. Was a new experience for us but always really well. This is a different holiday for us. My oldest daughter is 27 and my youngest is 12. I represented in maryland in the congress of the United States for six years. I am from new jersey and grew up in a bluecollar family. My dad was an electrician. A union electrician. They took good care of us coming up. After school i went to columbia and georgetown law school. I met my wife. She is from idaho. Her dad was a potato farmer. The electricians son meets the potato farmers daughter, only in america. After law school i started to businesses. They were successful. I created thousands of jobs, to thousands of jobs. My business focused on lending money to other businesses. Small to midsize businesses that were being ignored by the big banks. My company went money to 5000 Small Businesses all over the country. Administration gave us an award for our lending to disadvantaged communities because we did it in an ethical and responsible way. So focused on am Economic Development in small towns across this country. I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to public service, which led me to run for congress. I was elected to maryland in 2012. I flipped a district that was held by a republican for 20 years. A very competitive district. It could go republican or democrat. Yearsfor three terms, six and announce my intentions to run for president. I elected not to run for reelection because i think this is a serious paying and you ought to give it all your focus. It should not be a free option, you should be all in. That is a little bit about me. One of the things i have learned during that time i have been campaigning in iowa, talking to howrs all over the state is so many towns not only in the state, but all over the country are struggling. Is of the great challenges climate change, a Health Care Crisis in the country. We have a lot of issues going on. Challenges that i think i am the only candidate that is really focused on is how small towns in rule america shrinking andare aging and there is not opportunities for young people. That is one of the defining features of our country. It is a huge problem. It is a problem for two reasons. Number one, its a problem for the towns. You have a sense as to what its like here in brooklyn. You are seeing whats happening to your town and other towns. , agingy are shrinking and not a lot of young people are staying or coming to these towns, but its a huge problem for democracy. Our country was premised on the notion that we would have broadbased economic prosperity. Meaning, big cities would do well and rural would do well and midsize towns would do well. You know who is doing really well . Big cities. Last year in our country 80 of invested inat was new businesses think about this business, at one point this deli was a start up. Startups like this raise capital , they get investors to start their business. 80 of the money going into Startup Companies went to 50 counties in this country. 99 counties in iowa. 3000 counties in this country, 50 of them, only 50, 1. 6 of the counties that 80 of all the money. Countiesfive years with over one Million People, you know, the big counties, those counties created 100,000 new businesses in the last five years. Less thanunties with 100,000 people, those counties lost 20,000 to 30,000 businesses. The population of our country has grown by 75 Million People since 1990. America it shrunk by 3 Million People. This is destabilizing our democracy. Because a big state like california has two u. S. Senators. Has two u. S. State senators. Everyd to make sure it region of this country is working economically. We need to have policies and an approach to create jobs, encourage entrepreneurship, encourage innovation and get people investing in smaller communities. That, my friends, is one of the central challenges of our country. That is a focus of my campaign. For the next 30 days i will go around and do dirty stops and 40 towns along around iowa talking just about this issue. Is, i am asking you to do if you think this issue matters, if you think the Democratic Party and our leadership needs an agenda to encourage investment in small communities, i am asking you to caucus for me, to send a message, not only to the Democratic Party, but the americathat rural matters. That small towns matter. That they need to be the focus of national politics. That its not just about the coast. That its not just about the big cities. We cannot continue these trends. We cannot wake up in 10 or 20 years and see huge parts of our country drained economically and have 10 huge cities with all the jobs. That will never lead to a stable democracy. That will never allow us to do the things we should have done. That will be terrible for these communities. Things ill you the want to do to deal with these issues. I want to create an incentive for companies to locate in smaller towns. I will try you one simple thing that will have a big impact. Right now, the u. S. Government is the largest buyer of goods and services in the world. The u. S. Government buys more of everything than anyone. And you fund that, the taxpayers, through the Government Contracting process. So right now, if you are trying to get a government contract and you are a veteran owned business, or you a dutch are a minority owned business or woman owned business you get a preference, meaning you get an advantage of getting a government contract. I support those. Those are good programs. New programeate a were 25 of the government contracts in this country go to firms that have half of their employees in communities that are struggling economically. Because wed only more Government Contractors in San Francisco or los angeles. We need them in the heartland of this country. Do. s one thing i will it will be transformative. It will create an incentive for Government Contractors to think about hiring new people to set up operations in communities that are struggling. It includes the industrial belt of this country, even inner cities. Second thing i want to do is part of a National Infrastructure program. I have a plan for thats fully paid for. Want to create and over allocation, or a disproportionate allocation to the same community struggling economically. I wanted take part of our tax code where we have something called the earned income tax credit, which is a tax credit that goes to workers who are on the low end of the pay scale and actually puts money in their pocket at the end of the year. Earnedto increase the income tax credit i would like to increase at all over the country, but i want to increase it in community struggling economically. Then i want to build on something i did it while i was in congress, which is create the whichties own creates an incentive for private investors to invest in struggling communities. Things, a National Infrastructure program with more dollars and struggling communities. So we have Rural Broadband everywhere. An incentive for Government Contractors to locate. Doing things to help workers in these places. Creating incentives for private capital. A hugell transform number of struggling communities. Its an unmatched agenda. Its relative to any of the Democratic Candidates running for president. I would argue none of them are even talking about this issue. Campaign,e part of my as well as my proposals to create a form of universal health care, which we can talk about, but a smart form of universal health care, only three candidates have proposed universal health care. Only three. Universal Health Care Means everyone gives health care as a basic right of citizenship. Candidates have spare prose that. Senator warren, senator sanders and myself. The rest of the candidates are talking about a public option, which is government run. There is nothing wrong with it, but it wont deal with the problems we have in our health care system. It will be positive, but its a very small step. A mike senator warren and senator sanders who proposed a universal health system, but then they also make private insurance illegal, what i propose is a universal health your system that allows people to have private insurance, which is what germany does, french france does, australia does. I think every american should have health care as a right. But as you may know, and a lot of hospitals around this country , most hospitals around this country, particularly in Rural America, hospitals get paid to to three times from commercial insurance than they do from a government. The problem with having the government pay all the bills is it will keep the lights on in the hospital. The government pays less than the cost of health care. Thats why we want a mixed model. But it underscores how i think about policy and leadership, which is, we should be solving problems by looking at facts, looking at data, bringing people together with common sense solutions. I wrote a book, i see some of you have it. Its called the right answer. A speech that john f. Kennedy came in gave in 1958. In the speech he said we should not speak the republican answer, we should not seek the democratic answer, we should seek the right answer. He went on to say we should not seek to fix blame for the problems of the past. But we should own our responsibility for our future together as americans. Speech a fewhe weeks after something called sputnik was launched. You remember or read about sputnik. It was the rocket that the soap yet union launched into space. If you look at the history books , you realize the American People were utterly panicked by this event. They did not know what it meant, they thought it meant they lost their future. John kennedyders said, no, our future is ours to build, but we have to build it together. I think we are in a similar moment. Space,t one rocket into but its all this change driven by technology and globalization. Change that has been transformative and positive. This change been extraordinarily positive. Billions of human beings have been lifted out of poverty. Literally 2 billion people have been lifted out of poverty the last several decades. We have innovations that no one couldve ever imagined. Some children are born with or 30 yearshat 20 ago they wouldnt have a chance, now they can live full lives. Disease is our terminal are now curable or make chronic. With one device we could connect to people all over the world. We have open up societies. We know this changes been challenging for so many of our citizens. 40 of our citizens can afford their basic necessities. A lot of that is in Rural America and the heartland of this country. We need to come together and rise up to this challenge. The only way we could do it is by working together. For every challenge and opportunity we have theres a right answer. Theres a right answer for all these things. This is a magnificent country. We should not let anyone tell you otherwise. We had the best hand of any nation in the world. Notonly problem is we are saying it right. We are not working together were getting things done. That is the kind of leadership i want to bring to the white house. President thate wakes up every day and asked for strength that i could every day could do something to bring the American People together. Who wont act like half the country is entirely wrong about everything they believe. When the first hundred days will put forth ideas towards health care, infrastructure, but every one of those ideas will be based on an existing bipartisan bill in the congress. Because they exist. Democrats and republicans have come together. Thank you. Distracted me for a second. Where democrats and republicans came together and found Common Ground. When itd be amazing if the president was working on getting these things done . It does not mean we agree with each other on everything, and wants to live in a country where we agree with each other on everything . Things we dont agree with each other on our debated. Based on the facts and what some measure of stability. Once in a while your leaders roll up their sleeves and actually find Common Ground and get something done. We allhat the country deserve to live. Isnt that the country that the next generation, people like trinity, amazing young people like her and all these other fabulous young people deserve frosted do what we can do, which is to leave the world better than we found it. Thats what my campaign for president is about. I want to thank you for coming and now i want to hear what you all have to say. [applause] mr. Delaney whos got a question . About ruralidea communities. A referee blowing the whistle. We have a lot of people and makeing the market it hard for cattle ranchers. Free enterprise, you dont have a situation like that. We not only have that, now they have change the prices. We need a government that can actually help us with our market. Soybeans, we started to not be able to supply them. More localhave investments, well have a fair planes deal. We are going under if this situation is amplified more than it is already. Mr. Delaney let me tell you the two things i will do that will make a difference. The stock about trade first. I cant believe i am about to say what im about to say. Im the only democratic president running for candid democratic candidate running for president who supports the Transpacific Partnership. When i why im so amazed say this. This was president obamas number one domestic economic priority a second term. I would very closely with the administration and the congress. Was to create a , andtion trading block that group of nations, which does not include china, would supply 40 of the global economy, and the United States wouldve been the head of that group effectively. It willest harris lower tariffs and open up markets. A person that was an incredibly important port point person was tom. He was a great secretary of agriculture. The big winner in the Transpacific Partnership was agriculture. Farmers dont want handouts, they want markets. They want more opportunity to sell their products. If im elected president of the United States, i will get us back to the Transpacific Partnership. Every singleed it, price and every crop in this country will go up. The market will know we will be in a straight agreement. This was obamas number one priority. Number one i was lead point person in the house. Foras right, it was good farmers at the economy, it was good for our Competitive Position against china, and it put us in a position to build on our relationship with allies. The best way to have allies around the world is to have an economic relationship. Get us back into tpp, which will open up markets. The second part is about monopoly power. There are two antitrust laws in this country. One is called the sherman act. They are old laws. There are main antitrust laws. You know what they were designed for, they were designed for what is called horizontal mergers. Storesng got for grocery , each one on a corner. They create a monopoly and control prices. That is what those laws were designed for. The problem is they are outdated. We had now, we have vertical mergers, which is what you talked about. I bet that Company Owned other stuff. In technology and agriculture we have seen vertical integration. Well have the right antitrust laws. Update those antitrust laws to in courage competition, to encourage innovation, to make sure there are opportunities for new players and markets. The nice thing about the antitrust laws in this country, which is very unique and not a lot of people know, is, and people were smart when they wrote them, the clayton act and sherman act, if you update them you can apply them retroactively. Which is smart. The theory is, when you get around to updating the antitrust law, its probably too late for you have to turn the clock that. Isare going to ensure there more competition in these vertical mergers. In bigll result agriculture losing a lot of its power and putting more power into Small Farmers and operators. The problem is, horizontal mergers are what all these laws were written for. Big Agriculture Companies have consolidated everything but the riskiest part of the business. They have left that for you. They dont want that. What they want as heads they win, tails you lose. That has got to stop. Thank you, sir. Questions . Youre in the same business. Any questions . What are your plans with gerrymandering and how the Supreme Court decisions how. O you fix that in iowa we have the Gold Standard for how our redistricting is ram. I would love to see other states adopt something that is not partisan. I know you you are particularly affected by it. Mr. Delaney i have nothing to do with it because i was running my business. They gerrymandered it for a particular individual. Who i ran against and beat in a primary. That was my first exposure to gerrymandering. I realize when i went out there campaigning how everyone hated it. No matter which side of the aisle you are on. All the republicans hated it because they felt like their district, which had been mike plus 10, which became a competitive district, and i ended up being just beating a republican who had a for 20 years. Even the democrats didnt like it because they had a member of congress they like. Member of congress. Terrific member of congress. Like, the republicans hated it and the democrats hated it. Pledgeike i made a when iran. I said, i am running. Congress i will dedicate myself to this issue. Its insidious and destroying our democracy. Iowa,l have a right in and there are six or seven other states that have a judicial process. What it does is require all the states that independent commission and drawing these districts. The late Justice Scalia was not known to broadly interpret the constitution. Severalvery clearly in opinions that under the election clause, the congress can require the state to use independent commissions to do it. That is what the recent opinions decided. What the court has said is that this is not a traditional matter, this is a political matter, and the political system should address it by having independent commissions. I think we need National Legislation requiring commissions. I also think we should make election day a holiday. So more people can vote. Thats part of my open our democracy. We also need to do campaignfinance reform and have election security. This gerrymandering stuff is terrible. I will tell you a simple reason why. You get these districts that are gerrymandering are safe that means a republican or democrat will win no matter what. They are 20 republican or 20 democrat. Only 15 of seats in congress are competitive. Iowa has a lot more competitive districts because you have independent commissions. Almost all of your districts here are competitive. Sholten, and dave old district is competitive also. Well, it is still his district. The thing about members of congress that are in competitive districts is that they want to work with people on the other set of the aisle. Because they need those people to win an election. I was ranked the thirdmost bipartisan member of congress. I would have these big bipartisan bills, i would go to members of congress and say, what do you think about this idea . They would say, i like it. I would say, why dont you sign on . If they were a democrat, they would say, you have a lot of republicans. They said, that is not good for primary, if aa democrat runs against me, they may say we are doing all these things with republicans. A republican would say the same thing. If you are in one of these state districts, the only way you can lose is your primary. You can be attacked in a primary for being bipartisan. I am absolutely committed to ending gerrymandering as president. Your question is, what am i going to do about Global Warming . Lets hear it for trinity. [applause] asked thisd you question because what is so important and you are only 11. Your grandma is looking at you very proud right now. It is a big problem. Studied science in school, right . Science tells us that this is a problem. The science says the planet is warming. Warming,he planet is ice is melting, and that causes sea levels to rise but it also changes weather patterns. Butwould not realize it some of the weather here in iowa is determined by the weather in the oceans. It is a real big problem, and it is a problem for you and your friends and your generation. It is up to us to deal with it. Inhave to deal with it here the United States and around the world. The United States does not know any barriers. The weather does not know any barriers. It does not know the difference between the United States and mexico or europe. I want to first lead by example. Is way we lead by example for the United States of america, we need to get our house in order and start cutting Greenhouse Gas emissions by using less fossil fuels, which is oil, coal, natural gas, and using more of those Wind Turbines you see, solar panels. I dont know how many electric cars you have here in brooklyn, but you need more because we need to get electric cars to be less expensive, have better batteries. Situationcreate a where people are encouraged to use renewables, i want to invest money in scientists so they figure out your batteries. , the batteriesys wear out . How much better would it be if those lasted for 10 years . That is what we have to do with cars. With all kinds of new things. The Wind Turbines comedy solar weels used to exist, but invented them. To invent all kinds of other things. Byant to make sure that 2050, that the United States is not emitting any co2 into the atmosphere. I also want to use the position as president , many people call the president of the United States the world leader. I want to use the position to lead all the other nations around the world to do all the same things. We need to solve it here, we need to solve it around the world. The good news is that we can do telling us it is is a problem but the science is also telling us we can fix it. Parents workedur hard, dedicated themselves, took thought of a lot of good things to create this deli . That is kind of what we have to do on a big scale. Be positive we can fix the problem. So your kids can live in a totally sustainable world. [applause] the first time i heard you talk about health care and explain how your plan would pay for it, i have never looked back. Lets talk about health care. I am going to take a little bit of time. My sense is that the number one issue americans are dealing with is health care. It is three things. Access, meaning how many people have access to health care . It is cost, meaning how much does it cost us . And it is quality. Let me tell you the standard i want for all of those things. I want universal access. I think every american should have health care as a right of citizenship. I want to make sure quality is improved. One of the problems i have seen is in Rural America, the quality is challenged. I want to do things to control the cost. Is two other candidates that want universal health care. Bernie sanders and elizabeth warren, then there is me. All of the other candidates dont. My advice to voters, you should support people who want universal health care . Does anyone think health care is not a universal right in a country as wealthy as we are . In a way, we have a universal health care system. It is just the dumbest one. It is called the emergency room. If you go there, they have to take care of you. I am going to give Everyone Health care but unlike sanders and warren, i dont want to make private insurance illegal. Under my plan, it looks a lot like germany, france, australias plan. You go to those countries, everyone has health care, but also they can choose to have private insurance. It is called a mixed model. Right now, there is a huge loophole in our tax code where companies, corporations get a deduction on the cost of health care, yet individuals do not have to pay tax. A housingny gives you with health care, they give their employees health care and they do not pay tax on it, but they get the deduction. I want to take away the deduction and use that money to basically have universal access. Want theloyee does not Government Health care, they will get a tax credit which they can get which they can then give to their employer to offset the cost of health care. So everyone gets covered but everyone has the option for supplemental plans or opting out. We have a question back there. Can you tell me how you would improve the Mental Health care system also . Mr. Delaney the question was about Mental Health. By giving you my opinion. I think we have a Mental Health crisis in this country. 40 million americans self identify as having a Mental Illness. I think so many of the issues we have in this country tieback to Mental Illness. With parity. In thisealth care country is not on equal footing with physical health care. Mental Health Claims are four times more likely to get denied than physical Health Claims. Reimbursement to Mental Health providers are significantly less than reimbursements to physical health providers, which creates an incentive for people to go into the physical health care business, not the Mental Health care business. The second thing, we have to stop stigmatizing it. I think a president can do that. No one should be ashamed of a Mental Illness, just like no one should be ashamed of a physical condition, yet we allow that to exist in our society, which prevents people from stepping forward and saying they have a Mental Illness. Whereates situations family members are afraid to say someone in their family has a Mental Illness. If i were to ask you i wont do it if anyone in your family has a Mental Illness, i think everyone would put up their hand. If you look at anxiety in school, veteran suicide, despair and depression, it is terrible. We have to change how we approach Mental Illness. We need to change how our leaders approach Mental Illness. More resources in health care in this country. Then we can start tackling these issues. It takes a whole different approach. My wife april does a whole lot of work in this issue. She is one of the leading nonprofit leaders in this country dealing with the effect that media and Technology Companies have on children. Media literacy, the targeting that Technology Companies does on our kids. The effect that it is having on young people, which is devastating, by the way. The anxiety and depression it is creating. Crisis in this country. I am really familiar with this through the great work that april has done. Moreed to reimbursements, parity in the system. We need to talk about it differently, act differently, get rid of the stigma, pass some laws around privacy and digital targeting, deal with privacy issues in schools. There is a whole portfolio of issues. But it all starts with acknowledging how big this problem is, acknowledging that we dont talk about and think about it in the right way, and acknowledging that we need more investment in the Mental Health care of this country. Really great ideas, antitrust, health care, Mental Health. How do you get this stuff done in an atmosphere of campaignfinance . Mr. Delaney the first thing is it would be good to change some of the campaignfinance stuff. On all of this stuff, the difference between me and i think other people is i consider myself to be a pragmatic idealist. On a lot of the stuff i talk about, you cannot get it done right away. Like on this Mental Health issue. To stopass privacy laws some of this digital targeting that goes on. We can make some changes to School Curriculums that deal with Cyber Bullying and some of that stuff. We can pass laws creating more parity between health and Mental Health. Thing,nd of targeted every one of those things i just said has bipartisan support. Those things, you can get done right away. So, i am a pragmatic idealist. I want to tell you what my vision is for things but i also want you to know that i am going to start chopping wood on these issues right away. You dont wait until you have one big swing to solve the whole problem. Like health care. Health care is 1 6 of the u. S. Economy. You cant throw the whole system out and start from scratch. You have to have a vision of where you want to go then you have to start chipping away at it. Same thing with the antitrust laws. President , i will not be able to amend the how iust laws to exactly want them. I will do what i can through executive authority, legislatively, helping democrats get elected around the country so they can do things with the state legislature. It is all of those things. You turn the dials as much as you can to achieve your bigger vision. We have to make changes to campaignfinance, and mostly around citizens united. I would love for it to be overturned. I am not going to hold my breath for those. What i will do is work with the congress to pass a law requiring transparency. Let me give you an example that i find so outrageous. If someone gives me money on my campaign if someone were to give me more than 200. I dont take money from pacs, corporations. If somebody gives me money more than 200, i have to disclose their name, address, and what they do for a living. You can look up everybody who has given me money, their name, address, what they do for a living. You should know that information. And the most they can give me is 2800. Million inn put 200 a super pac and not say who they are and it can be completely dark honey. How is that possibly right that a super pac has more rights than an individual candidate . It is crazy. I always say you have to have an inside and outside game. The outside game is taking the case to the American People. You have got to take the case to the American People and explain the issues clearly, lay them all out. Like jerry like gerrymandering. I have yet to meet a citizen of the United States of america who thinks gerrymandering is a good idea. I have yet to meet that person other than an elected official who has benefited from gerrymandering. A lot of people have never heard of it. When they hear about it, they throw up, they are like, that is awful. You have a camera and a mic in front of you when you are president. You have to take the case to the American People. That is the outside game. But then you have the inside game where you have members of congress who are human beings. What do you do with human beings . You get to know them, you work with them. I am going to have a member of congress over for breakfast in the white house every day. Their family, their community, what we can do to help them. Build some relationships. In 2012,ined congress i was the copresident of my freshman class. We had a big class. , one of theame in biggest classes in congressional history. Me and my republican counterpart, we organized 40 bipartisan events. We had speakers on immigration,. Asic research i had relationships with people. It matters. It is not going to allow you to get something passed that did not get past. You may need these relationships. That is my inside game. You cant wave a magic wand. To be honest with you, they are all lying to you. We are never going to change the Electoral College. To change the Electoral College, you have to get a bunch of small states that benefit from it to agree to it. It requires a constitutional amendment. We have not passed rights amendment act. Women should be treated the same as men, what is the argument . We are not going to change the Electoral College system. Everyone is talking about these theories. Listen, our country is like all of us. I think every single citizen in this country has the potential to be inherently beautiful and good. But we are all also flawed. We are all imperfect. Our challenge is to have the overcome our imperfections. I think this is a magnificent country but it is not perfect. It has got imperfections. Our system of government is not perfect but it is the best one out there. Me, do you want to throw it out and start from scratch . I dont know, it has a good track record. If you look back over history, you look at medicare, social. Ecurity, Civil Rights Act you look at all these great they were done in a bipartisan coalition. People like Linda Johnson picked up the phone and worked it like Lyndon Johnson who picked up the phone and worked it to get the votes. Folks mr. Delaney getting the hook . One month from today is the iowa caucuses. Well do a quick little game. Raise your hand. Practice for the caucuses. Here. S making a stop you are going to see 42 more towns i think talking about rural invigoration and some great topics. Signed our not mailing list, let us know. John is going to wrap it up. Mr. Delaney i want to ask you a favor. I want you to caucus for me. Number one, i think i am the right person to be president. We have a good conversation here. I am happy to talk to you more about it. First in my family to go to congress, successful entrepreneur, created thousands of jobs, served in congress. Theres another reason i want you to caucus for me. That is to send a message. What has happened this cycle is the issues of small town america, small rural communities, small communities in the industrial belt, they have not been the priority of this election. Not even close. One that isi am the fighting for these issues. Iwill do it as president and promise you, if i do better at caucus than people expect him every single interview i give is going to be one message, which is that i invested my time in small iowa communities whose voices matter and they sent a message here tonight with me doing better than people thought. They are important, they matter, and we need to focus on their issues. The Democratic Party, one of the reasons i am proud to be a democrat my entire life, we are the party that is always fighting for the little guys, always fighting for people struggling. Right now, that includes people in small towns in Rural America. Smart trade policies, smart antitrust policies, investing in communities, encouraging businesses here, infrastructure here, improving the schools here. It is up to us to make this a priority on our agenda. I am apsley committed to making i am to people that absolutely committed to making clear to people that i asked smalltown communities to help me out. Thank you. God bless you all. [applause] right. Yeah. I have. Iml literally going to name all these small towns. Montezuma, down the whole list. We need to send a message. That was good. Nice job. Mr. Delaney thank you. Sen. Sanders [inaudible] mr. Delaney i do. You are one of the good ones. I wish you well. Mr. Delaney you can help me do well. Thank you, sir. Together . O yes. Mr. Delaney i am sensing a pattern. She is terrific. I have four daughters. My youngest one is 12. In seventh grade. Yeah. 27 to 12. Oldest is this one. The youngest is 22. Mr. Delaney thanks for having us. Great spot. How long did you say you have had it . [inaudible] saydelaney what did you you did before . Skydiving instructor. That is what i did for money and exercise. You just have the one child . Is 28. Ve a son who mr. Delaney you are like me. I have 27 and 12. Your 28 and 11. Thank you, sweetie. Thats ok. [laughter] year. New you made my day. Thanks for coming out. Sure. I havent heard anything about foreign. Mr. Delaney you didnt ask me. I raised my hand. The irani and military iraninan military leader. I have a grandson in the military. Mr. Delaney i am not going to the world is better off without him. He was probably responsible for more american servicemen and women deaths than anyone. The world is better off without him. I have not seen the evidence they are using to justify this strike, so i am not going to prejudge that. Believe mr. Delaney i think on these kind of issues, i never want to give President Trump the benefit of the doubt on anything but this guy was a bad guy, they killed him based on what they described as an imminent threat to our troops. I am not going to judge that because i have not seen it. Hiswhat i will judge him on that he did not consult with congressional leadership or our allies like britain or france. That would have taken him 15 minutes. And that is dangerous. Thinge the most important a president does is what he just did, which is to deploy our military. It should be done with humility, consultation. You have to be decisive, but you also have to take the appropriate steps. Because that is in the best interest of the United States of america. He did not do it. That really underscores what a reckless leader he is. I am not going to prejudge whether this was right or wrong but i will partially prejudge the way he did it. [inaudible] commanderinchief, you are going to be willing to work with congress . Mr. Delaney let me tell you the three things i would do before i would deploy our military, assuming i had time. Imminent attack on the United States, you have to send 9 11, when a plane was about to hit, you have got to first, you consult with your experts, military and state department. Second, you consult with the gang of eight. The third thing, if you have time, you take a walk around Arlington Cemetery and you make sure you have nature youre are ready to pick up a phone and call someone and make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. Those are the three things i would do. Son, artie. Y mr. Delaney hi, artie. How old is artie. Two. Artie is really cute. Look at that great jacket. Good luck to you. Lets keep in touch. Go get them. I have known ken he was at the baby shower at jacks house. It is great to see him again. I am trying. I think so. That is the bet. Best of luck. What do you do mr. Delaney what do you do . I make documentaries. I did one on George Washingtons father on pbs. I was working production in los angeles. We moved to iowa 16 years ago. Mr. Delaney this is your grandpa . Thank you, trinity. That was a good question. She is with it. Very sharp. It runs in the family. Thank you. How are you all doing . Thanks for coming out. I got you midbite. I am glad you came. Good questions. Mental health is a huge issue. The lack of access to it. That it is the fact stigmatized allows that lack of access to perpetuate. Afraid toople are like complain about a lack of access because they dont want people to know they are suffering. And no one should be ashamed of suffering from Mental Illness. The hardest thing to do is ask for help. When you ask for help and you are sent away, that is like the mr. Delaney sorry about that. Last year fork. Lost your fork. Right. It is one of it is the opposite that it should be. When people get a physical injury, they obviously seek out help. Many dont acknowledge, dont go get the help. Physical injury, they are typically very focused on navigating the system to get their care. You break your leg, you figure out how to get your care. You go to the doctor, you wait in the emergency room, you do all that stuff. A lot ofe inconvenience. When you are suffering from Mental Illness, getting care is hard even if it is right next door and free. A lot of people with Mental Illness do not want to get the care. The fact that it is a hard system to operate in just compounds the problem. I have been very vocal about it myself. My father committed suicide. Mr. Delaney you know firsthand. How old was he . 50. Mr. Delaney that is a prime age. Is the thing, it is like a physical it is no different. Anyone can get it. Look at robin williams. Look at these stories of these extraordinary [inaudible] cant ask for help. Mr. Delaney plenty of super successful, wellconnected am a very wealthy people commit suicide. Wellconnected, very wealthy people commit suicide. That shows you how tough this is. Because they have access. Thank you for coming out.
