Again and again the h. B. O. Drama takes home a legend and hes in a mostly virtual extravaganza will bring you over about. Im sumi so misconducts good to have you with us e. U. Foreign ministers are meeting in brussels where theyre trying to break a deadlock over imposing sanctions on bella racine officials and president aleksander the question call the block has a list of some 40 officials it blames for violence against antigovernment protests and electoral fraud during last months president ial election but cyprus is blocking those sanctions because it wants measures to be taken against turkey on a separate issue exiled Opposition Leaders said he said no sky is at the meeting in brussels a she is trying to keep up the pressure on the International Community to take action. Now a short while ago she gave an impassioned plea on behalf of the bell oversea and people. It is and it is filed against just one person. And. We are the majority and really really relieved from this is going to go days he was really they sit with us every day we grew up with the miss rich and they outgrew just him. Not because we had his position as the who was the people who you are is indeed one of these changes and just a little lets look at you know where to decide to write i was lets get more on the story now with our correspondents we have alex on the phenomena in brussels and Nick Connelly and minsk good to see you both alexander lets start with you there as you were at that press conference where specter and i spoke what else did she have to say. Well i found it quite interesting how she described her meeting with the new foreign minister and saying that she has osc them for help that the opposition in milan was understands that there really needs help to change the facts on the ground she also told us that she believes that sanctions are very important because they can force the regime to listen to what the people of their own lives has to say and in the end so she was very diplomatic describing this meeting but in the end shell also told us that her message to the e. U. Foreign minister was to tell them to be braver to be bolder and that of course could be seen as an indication that maybe there are figures within the opposition who are becoming impatient and who really wants the European Union to take action next lets come to you know we hear there that the impassioned plea from stateline addition of how is her meeting with the new foreign minister is being seen there in minutes. What people are definitely following these talks in brussels and the sanctions plans i think for most the opposition as we have money going to that this is a big its a question of too little too late this is a regime after all that is being under sanctions time and time again and the time and time again has the sanctions if there is a regime in europe that was hadnt had nothing to broaden made other arrangements i think it is the better russian one but i think at this point this is about the symbolism the symbolism to show that europe is paying attention to whats going on here is following this i think the most important thing for people here was that europe has refused to recognize the results that make election that was the big deal this is now perceived details your reality doesnt have much in the way of hard power inability to really put pressure on this regime but it is about the symbolism showing support by the russians in the country and those that have left. As for the official reaction what we heard are going to furious rebuttal of these plans last week from the Foreign Ministry threatening to respond asymmetry and even throughout foreign journalists alexander lets talk. No about what pressure the e. U. Can exert here the German Foreign minister has called for sanctions against president look i shant go himself so can we expect that actually to go through. Well actually that is what the foreign minister said after their last meeting in berlin a few weeks ago when they have announced that they are ready to cut to the sanction list if the situation is not going to improve on the ground in belarus and if there is she continues to use violence against peaceful demonstration that wants traitors and thats of course what we still see in minsk cities in belarus however adding question could to the sanctions list is one thing and agreeing on the list is a number thing and the Foreign Ministers are still discussing the sink sions with cyprus as you mentioned blocking the senate against the ally russian officials and trying to couple them with punitive measures against turkey so we hope at least that there will be or what we can expect is that there will be an agreement but there are still discussing the sanctions and the discussions are still going on and of course this is as nick said the u. S. Credibility that is now putting into question as long as the foreign minister is cannot agree on the sanctions start and nick i want to come back to you because this diplomatic debate comes off the back of another weekend of protests there where you are in minsk i mean how are demonstrators keeping the momentum going. Well that is the thing to me the regime here obviously happy to sound hoping there is some attention when 2 people see you but if you think remember here these protests are costing the states huge amounts of money. Being paid to write lease to keep the states those resources are finite disputes are changing and youve seen those images weaken week. Of protests coming up again. Police in balaclavas and just going around trying to those Police Forces literally and metaphorically weve seen people ripping off the Public Office ripping off the mosques and police often running away a strange thing to do if they really are convinced that what theyre doing is legitimate or even legal but in the metaphorical sense weve seen hackers loyal to the opposition hacking interior ministry databases releasing the names of Police Officers something that they obviously are very worried about weve seen activists post during the buildings the redemption complex where police live showing their neighbors what these people be getting up to that is Different Development the government seems very worried about and one seems to be promising quite quite a potential to put pressure back on the streets and the government in the weeks from. Our correspondents reporting for us Nick Connelly there in minsk aleksandr phenomena in brussels great to talk to you both now to a banking scandal of gigantic proportions a cache of documents just revealed show that for years banks around the world have helped divert and conceal criminal funds the documents lakes from the Us Treasury Department appear to show how banks helped to circumvent International Sanctions including those against iran and syria danish and british banks as well as Germanys Deutsche Bank are among those implicated. All over the world criminals are using the Global Financial system to launder money its a dirty bit lucrative business for the banks. If a bank notice is a suspicious transfer it has to report it to the authorities. Thousands of such reports were of time by bus made news. And then evaluated by the i. C. I. Jai. Its an International Network of investigative journalists. They have discovered evidence of Money Laundering worth 2. 00 trillion dollars. You could learn a lot by handling money from criminal sources. So thats why its hard for banks to say no to criminal money. In germany dortch a bank has some explaining to do the countrys largest banks already had to pay millions in fines in 27. 00 tane after a dog dealings in russia. The investigation reveals that those illegal activities a much more extensive than previously thought russian criminals used torture banks Moscow Branch to loan to millions the current c. E. O. Christian saving served as head of corporate order thing at the time he did not raise the alarm but subsequent external investigations deed. Deutsche bank says it is since toughened its internal controls and it denies that c. E. O. Sieving did anything wrong it says he was unaware of the external probe. I know i know how it was she founded a unit that led these investigations it would not be takes to have since been external investigations to this and at no stage could any responsibility be traced back to the head of the business to the concerns of it and the fun for to listen to the conservatives who have no interest in the investigation also shows that u. S. President donald trump may have profited from dirty money oligarchs from kazakstan allegedly bought apartments at the trump new york property with laundered money trumps Company Denies knowing who these customers were but they did make money from the transactions. The investigation shows the scale of international Money Laundering if its occurred but floundering because regulators cant get to grips with highly sophisticated criminal networks. It is a massive scandal lets talk about it more now with our Business ReporterArthur Sullivan is with us here in our studio and we have our correspondent shall see delaney over in frankfurt near the headquarters of dr back great to have you both arthur lets start with you were talking about a massive scale here so many banks that are implicated but what does this tell us about the Global Financial system you know the scam is huge so you know at the center of it is these 2000 or so suppose so called suspicious activity reports and these were these are reports detailing what banks suspect to be criminal activity in their accounts and so on so the so much detail to pore through its 20 years of reports and around 2 trillion dollars worth of transactions so so much stuff to come out and so much specific detail about some of these transactions what they tell us is something that on one level we already know about the Global Financial system banks have for years facilitated Money Laundering and the socalled washing of dirty money not something that they. Necessarily want to do but its something that has been happening but what these reports show is the extent to which its been happening and some specific examples shines a very very strong light on exactly the nature of some of those transactions i guess why there are so potentially for so many people one of those banks is germanys biggest lender Deutsche Bank and chelsea i mean if we look at the numbers here it was involved in 60 percent of the leaked transactions and tell us more about that such a thing very much at the at the center of this scandal and for which a bank this is obviously a blow up because theyve been embroiled in so many scandals over the past couple of years and theyve really been trying to move past it some of the details that have come out of this investigation were already known some of the Illicit Activity that had been involved in such as for helping evade sanctions against iran or for Money Laundering and russia those are things that georgia bank has already been fined for but what weve learned today is that that for many of these things they continue to carry on those activities after they had already been fined and as well as just these documents really just shed light on how lax really was for forth in time Money Laundering controls for example and russia where its Moscow Office was was under a lot of scrutiny for for Money Laundering they just have very few controls in place at all even the most basic ones like knowing who your clients are having an address for them they really didnt have any of that information so they definitely were turning a blind eye to. To these activities and thats really putting a lot more pressure on them today so what do you think this is going to mean for Deutsche Bank. It definitely opens up to more regulatory fines to more regulatory investigations Going Forward as i said they have paid some fines for these activities already but investigators likely will take another look at these reports and see if theres more to be done already is being investigated from by the department of justice and the United States for several Money Laundering complaints this could certainly play a role in that and it also does raise more pressure on the bank c. E. O. Christiane saving who was overseeing auditing at the time of some of these Money Laundering transactions and russia president has said that he wasnt really involved in that but critics say he should have taken a stronger approach to that so a lot of questions and we are seeing this certainly reflected in the stock price today its down about 6 percent so investors are clearly stooped by these new reports so arthur as we heard there Deutsche Bank is now under massive pressure again to clean house but who really is responsible is it the banks or the regulators who have also failed to do their job i mean ultimately sumeet is a little bit of both and its important to remember this information came directly from the banks they were obliged to file these reports of suspicious activity so they were largely aware of what was happening its not necessarily proof of criminal activity but when you see some of the cases broken down its quite clear that the banks had a very very good idea of what was going on so certainly theres a moral question on them why has this been allowed to happen when theyre literally making money through fees off some of these multimillion and 1000000000. 00 transactions at the same time it is ultimately regulators and in the u. S. And elsewhere that are responsible so its a little bit of both i mean the banks really should be should be doing better on this and some banks do better than others as weve seen Deutsche Bank is there in particular poorly or husband to keyboard in the past but ultimately its a little bit like the global tax question its up to regulators internationally to come together and governments to figure out a way to crack down on what is of global problem rather than one specific to any individual country will have to leave it there are business correspondents are there sullivan here in studio Chelsea Delaney for us in frankfurt thank you both very much. Now to some other stories making headlines around the world a plaque that antigovernment protesters in thailand installed over the weekend has been removed the plaque in bangkok declared that thailand belongs to the people well students have been leading protests since july calling for reform of the monarchy and political system. Hundreds of pilot whales have become stranded along the west coast of the australian island of tasmania government Scientists Say it appears that dozens of the animals have already died rescuers have arrived at the site they are assessing the situation. To sports now and in football leverkusen opened their bundesliga campaign looking to bounce back from the disappointment of last season and fans of the hosts file spurs. Were finally able to see their club in the flesh again as they return to the stadium after months of pandemic restrictions from volves recently celebrated their 75th birthday and their fans were back in the crowd and to give them belated congratulations was yeah but there was little else to show to vote in a target affair despite playing in the Europa League on thursday as leverkusen rested up forsberg looked a fresher sight john brooks missed their best chance the goal is for stuff i play minutes into the 2nd half me a maybe had the ball in the liberties and met by but the off site flood cut short through its joy the swiss internationals face neatly summed up the game despite the lack of goalmouth action the whole spur public was clearly grateful to be back. For the players though it was a lame start to the season but at least both sides could smile about it afterwards. Its been a month since likes it reached the Champions League semifinals on sunday it was back to the bread and butter of the bundesliga and they handled might easily. After just a few seasons like cigar firmly among the bundesliga elite could deal leonardos money lead them to a 1st championship their campaign got off to an ideal start against months before spirit already put someone up from the spot when use of pulse and strike made it to kneel on 17 minutes. Into the 2nd to finish off at least gave the visitors hope on 48 minutes to one. But that hope was swiftly doused by amadou i doubt who made it 31 just 3 minutes later. A satisfying 1st outing for leipsic but now goes mine will know that far sterner tests await his young pretenders i well if you play football you have to expect the occasional soccer ball to come flying at your head but for one member of the brazilian womens team that wasnt a ball but a bird as youre about to see here a check the very middle of the screen the women were interrupted during a Training Session when a large blue mccall landed on by a need to since head and stake there and then moved itself to the ball before flying on down the field past the goalkeeper and then the practice session resumed. I have now to the biggest night of the year for programs on the small screen it was held on a grand stage with no audience the emmy awards only had a hint of the glitz and glamour that were used to the us network h. B. O. Came up the big winner of the night at the shows succession and the watchman to call my handfuls of hardware. Or hello and welcome to the pandemic. At 1st it looked like any awards ceremony but it soon became clear there was some technical trickery going on and leave no audience but more than 100 stoss joining from home on live internet feeds it was a big challenge but everything went smoothly. Did you ever think i could do it. The top job the h. B. O. Series succession scored big wins across the drama categories with its star Jeremy Strong named best actor. In the bar the night with me about the moment i fell in love with you. This is the moment but the most awards went to watch me an adaptation of a superhero graphic novel tackling racism in america. My perception of time yeah i get it this series took 11 awards in total including Regina King Foote best actress reminded us that its not only awards season in the us election season got a vote i would be remiss not to mention that being a part of the show is precious and is watching how voting play and go to about the pedia dot com vote up the ballot please when thats time to lay down you know where ahead youll find cup 3rd and save partially renovated rose. Stanek sheets creek swifty comedy awards with 9 prices breaking the emmys for most wins in a single season for comedy. But the shows daniel levy was more political than comical in his acceptance speech is here as well our show who added core is about the transformational effects of love and acceptance and that is something that we need more of now than weve ever needed before and i just wanted to say for any of you who have not registered to vote please do so the city is emmys was hailed for its many nominees of people of color. One of them 24 year old scindia also became the youngest we know of best actress in a drama for her role in the series euphoria. But to talk more about the emmys now Melissa Holroyd from good of you arts and culture is with us hi melissa so this year the emmy awards they were digital they were virtual how did that work. Yeah i think it worked ok i mean i think along with a lot of other people my heart sinks the little bit when i hear this word virtual because everything seems to be virtual at the moment and being the 1st socially distanced emmys meant the ceremony was always going to be a little bit rocknroll we had jimmy kimmel in l. A. And they had 130. 00 camera chain sent out around the world to peoples houses or to wherever else they made and that provided some of the highlights and lowlights of the so we had David Letterman who rocked up to just sort of appeared in the field with a big bushy beard looking like a hermit hes been looking like a hermit for quite a while now and he had a jar of a live in and me for the back of a cop of this darius you talk series it was always going to be a little bit awkward and i think jimmy kimmel. Or couldnt us but the opening sequence when jimmy kimmel came out and he talked to an audience that effectively wasnt there and the audience that was in his head and then suddenly they really werent there and that was a big reminder of how isolated everyone is and how you know those of the taste of the rest of the show if you like i found a little bit depressing. So that was part of the emmys that kind of fell flat but at the same time there were big successes the story of the watchman for example that was a show that really one a lot of hardware also reflects the Political Climate in the u. S. Right now to tell us more about totally current watchman is absolutely spot on at the moment the series explores the legacy of racial violence in the United States the whole thing starts by looking at a real but little known massacre that took place in tulsa oklahoma in 1921 where white vigilantes attacked black residents executive producer damon lyndall hoffa dedicated he is best limited series award to the victims of that atrocity its inspired by the 1970 graphic novel of the same name watchman explores an alternate. Ality were massed vigilantes hunted as criminals in a story that tackles issues of Terrorism Police brutality and racism sound familiar yeah its really really current at the moment is the 1st comic book adaption to win a major for best limited series and it does 2 things its a once a comic book show and a show that examines these very very important issues so it was a big night for the watch them a bit also for a show called shifts creek tell us more about this one thats right shits creek spelt with a c and to tease for anyone thinking anything different everything everyone is saying that this years emmys was a shits creek show its a canadian show about a rich family who lose almost everything and have to settle down in a place called shits creek its created by eugene and livia father and son team they created and starred in the sitcom they both took home and raise that makes them the 1st ever Father Son Team to win emmys in the same year they won 7 the show won 7 prime time awards and 9 emmys in total all right thats certainly something to celebrate and just quickly succession did really well succession did really really well successions a great show its a little bit like a modern day dallas and the sort of the also sort of long lines of like king lear its a terrific show if you a good night at the emmys for a lot of shows there most all right from good of you arts and culture thank you so much for joining us. And lets get a reminder now of our top stories here and e. W. European Union Ministers have met with valerie says the exiled Opposition Leader as they debated opposing sanctions on the belarusians machine that is the wake of a disputed election and crackdowns on antigovernment protests. And the massive investigation reveals that for years banks around the world have helped divert and conceal trillions in criminal funds danish and british banks as well as germanys georgia bank are among those implicated in the league. A clean pristine gibson at the crack of dawn does this big show from banging the roof or maybe a troop if yes we feel proud and create for her how annoying in view of us we knew this story was in our very 1st episode broadcast many who was you know 2018. Some time ago and to me im happy to welcome you to the 137 of equal india we want to have a look back at some of our favorite stories and change me and without a doubt. Who successfully. In honey boo hoo lets go back and how she did it. Movie. It took. About 10 years to rescue and revive a neighborhood lake in the south of bungalow. It was actually a choice because. From my balcony i could see the sleek and it didnt at all look like what it is today it was a dying and 7 i felt that. Levi and louder live to die before my eyes than i am popular spawns before its demise. With the help of neighbors and the Larger Community that article cullen urged the civic authorities to invest in the revival of put in a. Year they agreed on the condition that its maintenance would be up to its citizens. In 2010000 pooled in money to form a Lake Improvement trust with like minded citizens and experimented with innovation based on simple science. They used discarded p. V. C. Pipes to create a number of artificial floating islands. We did our own research on how to improve the quality of the what done to be zoned in on this principle of hydroponics very you have people growing money planting bottles of water basically the job being the nutrients from the water so we extended that into making these what we call the artificial floating islands. These islands are made up of plastic bottles that have several species of bio filter plants growing in them. Of these plants absorb pollutants like excess nitrogen and phosphorus that enter the lake along with sewage. If they do remain in the water it leads to an overgrowth of vegetation that eventually deplete the oxygen by 60000 feet we have left it in the field because this is. Only 6 months after introducing the islands. Noticed a significant improvement in the condition of the lake. But. You didnt even need to test the water to see that that the quality was improving because we could see the big bad you can see fish and the birds were coming there and it was absolutely delightful. Bangalow has had leaks since the 8 century. They were built when the city was founded because it lacked a perennial river and received low rainfall. Lakes in fact remain the primary source of water for bangalore eons but as the city grew and biped water was brought in the lakes lost the attention they once received d. But now citizens groups like radical pollens are trying to restart the discourse and revive the former glory of that citys beautiful lakes. We are constantly having these programs all to bring that Community Together to this lake to make them understand that this lake is important not only that it is recharging the water dave. She is giving in and seeing the green color and the people can see a difference and hed love to come here on the time but it is no freebies you have to contribute something to. Put out a good palin continues to ensure that her Community Works to keep the lake alive. Bringing back and link to life in the street a report of caught up with him to find out if anything has changed in the 2 years and working somewhere to meet and to continue the crusade. Its on a 0 again so does was the reaction to the Shuttle Mission nothing. Else is your story came out he started again in college from a grass in different parts of the india after there was somebody over there were some. Of the dish so. Its very exciting because now people like being busy theres an extraordinary about me and my friends. And for all i know it will be much better so what do you say that leaks in bangalore is even more attention what is been happening in bellews and we have a broad im not sure of the number. Its essentially. How do good relations links i now we are actually we want to go down a document on how who are rejuvenating a leak and what about how to meet a need to. Be active participation our people and that. I think leaks were leaks of the number leaks that still lead. What are your plans for the future. I will then we give you a lot more so there uselessly will. Mean a leak now i see potential for a lot more birds to come and. I think i feel they have. So i think. And how they were judged by the. That will be well worth it because what got him also been telling the other generation is that belief belongs to you so you need to take it forward you can are is japan not wild to people but here it is a community that. And i think that sabean would like to thank you so much for your time. Excess story definitely shows us how much a community can achieve together that can also be said for our next favorite story from germany where a group of climate pioneers once decided we want to show the world that 100 percent. Possible and guess what today we produce even more energy than me. Its all there in nature we dont need to take any energy from fossil sources underground plenty is given to us every day we just have to make use of it. Builds boats great produces 8 times as much electricity as its 2600 residents can use all that electricity isnt produced in one big plant but in a decentralized fashion and it is then made available to others via the grid. Delegations from the places around the world marked by flags who have come to inspect this revolutionary village. They usually welcomes by on. Hes been married for 23 years and has been involved in the shift to renewables from the start. The villagers have invested 50000000 euros over the past 2 decades 300 photovoltaics systems 9 Wind Turbines as well as several hydroelectric and combined heat and power plants. We want to show that it is possible to create a regional circular economy for Energy Production and energy use this country of course it has to make economic sense. Another father of the green revolution of paul street is vandal unseat. Hes a farmer who started experimenting with Renewable Energy in the 1990 s. He soon won over his fellow villagers and set up a wind farm cooperative. Anyone who lives in the community where a windmill is located can invest the more people join the lower the amount each may invest its currently 5000 euros and no more. I know has set up for bio gas plants on his farm they now heat the entire village. He designed some of the components himself the Energy Sources are all local animal waste and grass silence from 20 nearby farms. They replace 700000 liters of heating oil a year. With their mix and with the right mix it wont be hard to attain 100 Percent Renewables many people dont believe that but its true the amount of clean energy we produce in a very neat could also be generated in other communities districts and states. Cries of grip on the. Energy generation is one key factor to others their Energy Storage and developing an intelligent grid so power can be moved to where its needed. Theres no known company and addresses both these issues it makes lithium ion phosphate batteries which in combination with solar panels enables households to become largely energy independent. It also manages an electricity sharing system so on and community. Private power sharing could perhaps one day make the large Utility Companies and that huge power plants redundant. One small. Village in bavaria could inspire other people across germany and in other countries. Examples like these are proof that change is not only possible but. Now i would like to bring you back a story thats especially for my hot yoga will be reporting about the Women Farmers in the region of western libya who cleaned the. Land from the end several farmland women were revolutionary and now during the pandemic theyre probably the best families. The women of body village in eastern maharashtra are singing songs of prayer for a good harvest and weeding out the bad luck theyve had to face in the last decade. But a lot of it out they look at the lot that go in the region of. Bobby is one of the harshest places in india to be a farmer crop failure severe groundwater depletion Food Insecurity and uncertain cashflow are widespread problems its drought prone districts are seeing an increasing number of farmers who cite every year. Despair and hope of guaranteed returns had forced farmers like Suneet Kulkarni to concentrate on cash crops like sugar cane and so have the money he earned was always blood back into the farm for the next season this meant there was very little to feed his family. His wife was determined to break the cycle. When a man works on the farm its only thinks about money what they want and the Big Decisions that need to be taken this is effective but i want to support it is very different she thinks about home and the needs of her family the food and the money thats required to survive well when they hit the. Tree years ago she insisted that her husband set aside one acre of farmland to grow fruit vegetables and greens to meet the food needs of the family not only that she insisted but the land be legally transferred to her name for a woman to make such a demand was not only rare but revolutionary. In india 3 percent of farm land is inherited and owned by male members of the family while women inherit and on less than 2 percent. That many men have always had to work as farm laborers 70 per cent of the men farmers today do 80 per cent of all the work in the yard is just a few makers but as helpers so what right now the owners to mike in one incredible. Funny i know them will get him a little. Good over he heads to a local wing of slam should show in a pretty or a womens Empowerment Organization that has helped many women assert themselves. The idea to empower women came after a startling revelation in 2009 many of them were severely malnourished. I mean it. When we conducted a medical camp to test the level of him a little been in the amazon he realized it was very. Good looking for that man about other women present so that in rural families women traditionally serve the men 1st and then whatever is left and sometimes its nothing at all
