Good evening. Im bret baier. Breaking tonight two elderly israeli women have been released by their hamas kidnappers and senior u. S. Officials confirm the u. S. Is, in fact, privately urging israel to wait on its expected Ground Incursion to allow for more time to arrange the release of additional hostages. Mike tobin starts us off tonight live from southern israel. Good evening, mike. Reporter good evening, bret. Two israeli women are free from hamas captivity. A slow drip of Hostage Releases as Israeli Military leaders say theyre ready to begin the Ground Invasion. Im not gonna sit here and assume theres going to be some sort of Ground Invasion. Reporter yet for days israels Defense Minister has told forces to be ready. Today speaking to the countrys navy. Translator we are preparing thoroughly for The Next Step Multilateral Operation in the air, ground and sea. Reporter the number of confirmed hostages has risen almost every day. Today israel said 222. The white house says that includes a handful of americans. We still have about ten unaccounted for americans. Its not exactly clear where those ten people are. Reporter reports today signaled on going negotiations between israel and hamas to release dozens of dual citizen hostages. The implementation of the deal is facing challenges. The Israeli Defense forces say they are working to release all of the hostages. Translator we are now looking at who holds what kind of power. Without race, religion or anything else, just to bring everyone home. Reporter hamas is reportedly willing to negotiate the release of all those held captive except for Israeli Soldiers. For now, israels ramping up air strikes on gaza where the death toll is rising rapidly. And many are still in desperate need of aid. Convoys have delivered a small percentage of food, medicine and water that is needed. Israel still preventing any fuel deliveries. Amid rising fear that the war could spread beyond gaza and israel, Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu repeated the message, hamas is isis. I have been through wars. I have seen horrible things. I have never seen things this horrible. This is a battle of our constitution. Reporter why is it important . It wasnt sporadic freedom fighters. What you saw here today is brutal ruthless attacks. Thats even worse. Reporter the israeli Prime Ministers office notes the freed women were kidnapped with their husbands on october 7th. Their husbands are still hostages in gaza. Bret . Mike tobin live in southern israel. The border near lebanon as sporadic fighting along that boundary continues. Concern is on the rise for a possible second front in this war. An effort funded intensely by iran. Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent greg palcott is at the border. Good evening, greg. Reporter bret, we are right up against that border where we have been tracking into this evening clashes between the Israeli Military and the next door iranian backed hezbollah militants. Israeli Defense Force claims it has struck ten hezbollah terror cells just in the past 24 hours. The casualties, 20 hezbollah fighters killed, 7 Israeli Soldiers plus civilians killed and injured. This leading to evacuations on both sides of the border. Residents in 43 towns and villages in israel have been told to leave. That means as many as 100,000 civilians have fled. Some are still here though and that is a risk. Take a look. This is where a hezbollah missile hit, just on the other side of the border from lebanon here in northern israel. Damage done to this private house. Police military in place. Its believed to have been an antitank missile which is small in size but when fired from a short distance away, it can pack a real punch along with the destruction of the house, two children huddling to shelter inside were hurt from flying glass. The busy mayor at the scene again. Its not good. We are okay. We are strong. Reporter we are strong, he says. Hezbollah is tying up Tens Of Thousands of Israeli Soldiers in this area as the Ground Incursion against hamas and the Hostage Drama both move down south. Probably what iran, the benefactor of hamas has in mind. Greg, thanks. President Biden Cutting short a speech today on bidenomics to be briefed on the latest on israels response to hamas attacks. He told reporters any talk of a cease fire is premature. The priority, the president saying, is getting hostages out. White house correspondent Jaqui Heinrich has the story. Reporter the president s only event did not focus on any of the big issues that hes facing, like getting hostages out of gaza, keeping this war from widening, or getting a huge aid package through congress for israel and ukraine. Behind the scenes much more activity than theyre willing to speak to, prompting biden to cut his speech short. I apologize. I have to go to the situation room. Theres another issue i have to deal with. Reporter the white house never divulged what drew him away from his bidenomics event but showed a picture. Biden only briefly addressing israel today, speaking to, but not confirming rumblings that the u. S. Is in talks about a temporary cease fire in exchange for Hostage Releases. Are you talking about a cease fire deal . Reporter officials have been reluctant to share exactly what theyre advising including over the timing of a possible Israeli Ground invasion, but they are disclosing some questions theyre asking israel to think over. Have you thought through the branches, through the Unintended Consequences . We are in active conversation about that. Reporter while also pressing congress for funding. Are you concerned about not being clear with folks about what the u. S. Is advising israel to do will hamper support in congress for this aid . I think weve been very clear and consistent throughout. Weve got enough appropriations available for awhile longer. How long is that while is gonna depend on the Expenditure Rate and the kinds of operations that theyre conducting. Reporter mean time swiss backlash over this response when asked if the administration is asked about the rise in antisemitism. We have not seen any credible threats. I know there have been questions about credible threats. And so just want to make sure thats out there. But look, muslim and those perceived to be muslim have endured a number of hate filled attacks. Reporter tweeting in part, to be clear, the president and our team are very concerned about a rise in antisemitism after the horrific attack in israel. She went on to say this concern prompted the president to have his Homeland Security team keep an eye out for any threats to the jewish community, as well as muslims, arab and palestinianamerican communities, but she also drew criticism for refusing to condemn the antisemitic rhetoric we are hearing at some of these pro palestinian protests on campuses across the u. S. , citing the First Amendment and the right to peaceful protest, bret. Thank you. The Defense Department is sending more american weaponry to the middle east. Troops are also being told to prepare to deploy within 24 hours, if needed. And the Defense Secretary warns that a possible expansion of fighting throughout the region is a real threat. Senior National Correspondent rich edson reports from the pentagon. Reporter the Eisenhower Gulf Troop is heading to the persian gulf. That increases pressure on iran. Reporter the president assigned the eisenhower to the Eastern Mediterranean but plans changed as intensified drones and rocket and missile attacks against american forces. We know iran responds to posturing of u. S. Forces. Our capabilities now are, in fact, designed to deter them from attacking. Reporter the United States military still has a significant presence across the region, including 900 troops in syria and about 2,500 in iraq. U. S. Central command says overnight the military intercepted two oneway attack drones heading toward the base in Southwest Syria Housing American troops. Last week drone and rocket attacks aimed at alasad base in iraq and troops stationed closer to baghdad. Nine hours last week, 15 drones were downed and 3 cruise messles. It was in the red sea when it intercepted the missiles. Hutis fired them from yemen. We dont necessarily see iran has explicitly ordered them to take these kinds of attacks back to their supported by iran. We will ultimately hold iran responsible. Reporter secretary lloyd austin said the Defense Department is activating more Patriot MissileDefense Systems in the middle east and a thad battery. Were going to do whats necessary to ensure our troops are in a good position, theyre protected. Reporter iraqi army Spokes Person said iraq will go after the militants who fired on bases that house u. S. Troops. Defense Department SaidSecretary Austin thanked the iraqi Prime Minister today for reaffirming the commitment to the coalition forces. Bret . Rich thank you. Up next well take a closer look at whats happening in the middle east with new attacks on those u. S. Bases on this, The 40th Anniversary of the Marine Barracks in beirut conducted by hezbollah. Com there was nothing in his appearance to suggest it was any different than the trucks or cars that were normally seen around the airport. This was different. At the wheel was a young man on a suicide mission. The truck smashed through the doors of the Headquarters Building in which our marines were sleeping and instantly exploded. Now many of you are asking why should our young men be dying in lebanon . Why is lebanon important to us . The middle east is a powder keg. Four times in the last 30 years the arabs and israelis have gone to war. Each time the world has teetered near the edge of catastrophe. Bret good teetering now. President reagan 40 years ago reacting to the marine baraks bombing in killed 228 marines, 18 sailors, 3 soldiers, 58 french troops and 6 civilians. Lets bring in retired general jack keane. General, thanks for being here. Where were you back then 40 years ago . I was commanding an Infantry Battalion in fort lewis, washington. I think i was in my second or third year of command. Yeah. Bret the reaction to that and what happened after that, you know, obviously iran backed attack. Here we are again with u. S. Bases getting attacked today. Yeah. Thats very interesting what took place there. The Marine Barracks was bombed. It was iranian proxy that did it a forerunner of hezbollah something we referred to at the time as Islamic Jihad which we have a palestinian version of today. But the use of proxies like that by a nation state to do Something Like that i think took us by surprise. We had difficulty coming to grips with the nation state that had actually done it because there was no reaction, in terms of we did our best to pull the troops out. You could make a case whether the troops should have been there or should not have been there. I thought it was extraordinary that we didnt take action and hold someone accountable for killing so many of our troops. But this proxy that began then by iran to use proxies to deflect themselves from responsibility and accountability turned out to be a strategy that worked. They blew up our embassy in lebanon. They blew up our annex in lebanon. They blew up the kuwait u. S. Embassy also within a year. They blew up Khobar Towers the next decade in saudi arabia. And by and large, that strategy has worked for them, you know, through the years. We have been very reluctant to hold them accountable. Now certainly more recently we have. But even today, bret, look. They have attacked the u. S. Facilities in iraq and syria close to 90 times in the last three years. Bret let me put up the maps. The u. S. Has bases all over the middle east, obviously, in a number of different places. But you look at these strikes. These are just recent strikes on u. S. Bases, believed to be, as you mentioned, from iran backed proxies. Unfortunately there havent been massive fatalities and there havent been very few people injured, but they are getting attacked increasingly. Yeah. Im stunned by it, that were not doing anything about it. We are defending against some of it. If they shoot a missile, we shoot it down. If they send a drone, we shoot them down. We havent had fatalities. Thats not the issue. The issue is we have iran using proxies that are attacking u. S. Bases, whether there are u. S. Troops or bases that our hosts are running and we have our troops on those bases. The reason is to try to kill americans. What is the strategy here . The iranians have announced their strategy every year for 40 plus year, dominate and control the middle east, control the flow of oil out of the persian gulf. Two things they say have to be done to accomplish that mission. Drive the United States out of the mission by forcing our military to turn tail and leave, and destroy the state of israel. If we want to stop the iranians from attacking these bases, we have to do something about it. We should hammer them for it. Reporter theres a lot of people that listen to you and say we are on the brink of getting drawn into something, like a World War Iii something. If you look at the u. S. Forces just the naval forces that are positioned around this region, it is significant and its only growing. The eisenhower is going to be on station, the Carrier Strike group, very soon. There are people who look at this and listen to you and understand the need for a response to these attacks, but worry about getting drawn into some bigger regional conflict that spills out all over it. What do you say to them . Well, i think what you do here is certainly send enough of a message against those proxies. Ill let the pentagon and others on our national Security Team figure out what the targets should be. But send a message loud and clear to them that were not gonna put up with this, and things are just gonna get worse if you continue to do that. To sit back there and just defend and not reattack makes no sense to me. That is how were gonna get into a much larger war. I mean, this is all calculated here. Iran has taken this action because they perceive appeasement and weakness on the part of the United States. They think they can get away with it. The savage attack that hamas has made is perceived weakness they believe was inside israel, in terms of their political and social division thats taken place. But also the way this administration has dealt with iran for the last three years, wanting to go back into the nuclear deal, backing off on trump sanctions. Iran is flush with money now because we have not enforced the sanctions. They see that as weakness. When they see weakness, they get more aggressive. I dont know why we have to keep learning the lesson over and over again. Bret i want to ask you one thing quickly about this axios has the story. Marine Three Star General advising on gaza Ground Operation. Marine corps officers sent include james glenn according to a senior military israeli official. Glenn previously headed up the Marine Special operations, was involved in operations against isis in iraq, reportedly advising the idf on this Ground Operation. What do you think about that quickly . Is he active duty, retired . I dont have a feel for it. Bret they are saying current three star. Okay. I think thats appropriate. Look, if they got a three dimensional war on their hands. Tall buildings, roads and alley ways to deal with on the ground and then third dimension underneath. Very complicated infested with civilians who live in the area, hostages somewhere. This is a complicated and urban setting. We can recall in recent history here and certainly theyre going to have to take their time and exercise some patience to be able to work their way through it. Obviously, complicated now by how hamas is using the hostages as a strategy, likely to delay the offense and certainly to minimize the israeli use of their offensive power because of these hostages. Bret general, as always, thanks a lot. Yeah. Great talking to you. Bret up next, why nations supporting the palestinians refuse to allow refugees into their country. Lucas tomlinson looks at that situation tonight in tel aviv. Reporter sitting next to the british Prime Minister in kaoeu cairo, egypts president said we will not allow any palestinians to enter the country as refugees. Translator we stress the importance of not allowing palestinians to be displaced from gaza. This is too dangerous and might end the palestinian cause. This is something we are determined not the happen. Reporter the white house acknowledges he has a point. Theyve got legitimate security concerns. Again, we just need to work through that. Reporter king abodullah stated he does not want any palestinians either. That is a red line. No refugees in jordan or egypt. That is a situation that has to be dealt inside of gaza and the west bank and not to try and push the palestinian challenge or their future on top of peoples shoulders. Reporter before the war more than 2 million palestinians lived in gaza. Israeli military has ordered half the population to move south closer to the border with egypt. Two weeks after the october 7th massacre, egypt opened its only Border Crossing with gaza to allow humanitarian aid to enter. One middle east expert offered a reason why both jordan and egypt dont want the palestinian refugees. The reason why this is happening is that none of these governments are thinking of this crisis as a temporary thing. They think if gazans leave frbgs they will not go back. Reporter last week in tel aviv, President Biden pledged gaza and the west bank 100 million. U. S. Tonight House Republicans meet again to hear pitches from the lawmakers running for speaker. There are nine candidates now. A vote could come as soon as tomorrow. Where does it go from here . Senior correspondent chad pergrem on capitol hill with the latest. Good evening. Reporter its deja vu all over again. Byron donalds spoke with President Trump about his bid. These members understand that i am truthful with them. I do not pull punches. Im very direct. But at the same time, we have to have members at the table. Reporter one reason republicans failed to elect a speaker is because members refused to support the official party nominee. The Majority Party is only a Majority Party when it votes as a majority. Im sick of sitting in a Room Listening everybody to talk about their feelings. Reporter now heres the schedule. Were concerned about potential escalation. The prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region. Were taking every measure to make sure we can defend them and, if necessary, respond decisively. Not at all what were looking for, not what we want, but we will be prepared if thats what they choose to do. We got to do what weve got to do to protect our troops on the ground, particularly in iraq and syria. We are watching this very, very closely. Bret there is concern about this escalating to an expansion in the region, broader. Washington post, hezbollah steps up attack. Idf said fueling fears of wider conflict. Fears that the war could swell to a wider attack. Expanding israeli air strikes across the region. This as we talked about earlier on The 40th Anniversary of the Marine Barracks bombing inside beirut. Lets bring in our panel. Brett hume, Leslie Marshall and Trace Gallagher from jerusalem. Trace, im in your seat. You are very far far from this seat. Whats your sense of things on the ground there now getting settled in jerusalem and how things are going ahead of what is expected to be this Ground Operation . Yeah. I think the Ground Operation slowed to an almost halt. What you are seeing is a good point that the Washington Post made which is things are heating up in the north. Today we saw a rocket attack. Those may recall back in 2006, we were all there because it was the war between hezbollah and israel and we were watching rockets come in and out for about 0 days. Thats the big fear. They keep shooting rockets. The idf, Israeli Defense forces, keep going after these military points in lebanon where these rockets are coming from. It sounds and looks like that Northern Front is going to become an active front as soon as this Ground Invasion begins. The problem is nobody knows when the Ground Invasion is going to begin. Maybe thats a good thing. Maybe the more time the Israeli Defense forces have, the more they can get an idea of what theyre facing in what would be a very ugly urban warfare, bret. Bret the Wall Street Journal had a poll out. Americans weary of getting pulled into middle east conflict. Use of u. S. Troops if israel was attacked by its neighbors favor 38 , oppose 78 . That tracks what you see national about people getting into something broader in that region. But its real. Its a real concern. Yeah. I dont think the United States could sit by and let israel be attacked from all directions really and not respond militarily, in which point the people who are resisting that would be majority, as the poll suggests. I think, bret, theres a deeper strain about American Public opinion. What people are resistant to. They dont want the United States involved in Military Action if they can be avoided. What they really dont like is indecisive Military Action. Which explains why Public Opinion soured on iraq. Which Public Opinion soured on afghanistan and why Public Opinion soured on even ukraine, where we have nobody fighting on the ground there, none of our soldiers. Its a matter of money and material. But even that, people dont think theres a plan to win it. They want to end it. So thats, i think, something to keep in mind as we move forward here and keep an eye on American Public opinion. Bret leslie, if you bounce around these campuses and these different protests we are seeing in the United States and around the world, theres a bipartisan delegation from capitol hill as senator katie brit, republican from alabama Just Launched these videos shown by the idf in israel and was emotional. Take a listen. When we watch the videos and heard the stories today, the things that happened were unthinkable. Its disgusting. Its despicable. It is pure evil. I do not believe that good can exist with evil. And when evil rears its head, we must look it in the eyes and we must take it down. Bret your thoughts on that and contrast what we hear from the white house about some of this Stuff Sprouting up and whether theres an equivocation or not. Theres emotions when we see people that are dragged and murdered and raped and beheaded and held hostage. That, bret, is a huge issue. What israel decides to do with gaza, with lebanon, with syria, with United States and our allies is definitely going to, you know, be taken out on if you will by hamas on the hostages. Im sure that the officials making decisions need to know that far better than i do. Politically, we see these images and we get outraged. But there are more and more people, and not just in the arab world, that are also seeing numbers, like over 2,000 children that have been killed in gaza, 1,100 women. We have infants in nicu that are dying because theres been blackouts there. I do know most people that i have spoken to, my background, i lived in israel, jewish parents, married into a muslim family. I have been to the west bank when i lived in israel. Especially among the youth, they dont want to live this way any more. They dont want their children, their childrens children to live this way. But everybody is saying, we have to get rid of hamas. But the casualties. Were not seeing hamas in these coffins, we are seeing thousands of innocent women and children. These pregnant women, babies in nicus are part of hamas. The emotion we are hearing, from democratic legislators. We are just so upset about whats happening to the chil children. Lets keep in mind here that the information that we see so widely quoted and reported on the casualties in gaza are coming largely from the Palestinian Health authorities, health ministry, which is hamas controlled. I think we have to be very much on guard to not exaggerate those casualties because they come from sources we simply cannot rely on. Bret New York Times came out with a note on the Hospital Coverage that given the sense of news times editors should have taken more care with the initial presentation and have been more explicit about what information could be verified. Trace, last word here quickly. Israeli Defense Officers and whole bunch of officials coming out saying, you know, we need to be careful about getting out there. The New York Times didnt just get this wrong. They screamed it wrong with the biggest headline. They called it a dispute. They only took evidence from one side of this, and that was hamas. Hamas was given them phoney information. And then israel said initially, look, we are not doing anything. We are going to investigate this. And then they gave all the proof they needed and it turns out that hamas was wrong and they are wrong, leslie, about the numbers in most cases. But, trace, Doctors Without Borders has specifically said the children in the incubators because of the blackouts are dying. I believe those Doctors Without Borders who have no political game in this and they are international, positions from the United States and elsewhere in the world. Bret panel stand by, if you would.
