Former President Trump took the stand himself today to explain who he was referencing in this comment that resulted in that 10,000 fine for violating a partial gag order. The judge is a very partisan judge with a person who is very partisan sitting alongside him. Perhaps even much more partisan than he is. Reporter bret, the gag order prevents trump from commenting on members of the judges staff. Trump said under oath he was talking about his former lawyer, michael cohen, but the judge called trump not credible and ruled that he was actually talking about a law clerk. This is now the second fine imposed for trump for a gag order violation. As for cohen, under crossexamination today, he admitted to lying numerous times about trump and his own action, but while walking out of the courtroom tonight, he defended his behavior and had to say about the former president. I saw a defeated man. I saw somebody that knows defeat. End of the trump organization. Already found guilty of fraud. The license will ultimately be taken. Now this entire case is merely about how much. Reporter at the end of his testimony today, cohen said trump never actually instructed him to change property values. America, except supporting israel, hasnt done anything. For millions of americans needing, watching mike johnson for the first time, he made a very, very good impression. I think whats significant is that his first message wasnt to the fellow republicans. It wasnt to the conservaconser. It was directed to hakeem jefferies. He said i know you love your country. Were going to reach Common Ground. Were not going to sacrifice Core Principles but we will sacrifice our preferences to get things done. It was significant. It was full of grace. Guy named maga mike johnson. It wasnt the trumpian start youd expect. But now he has to deliver. It will be interesting to see whether he is allowed to delivery. Bret molly, how mike johnson is described by the New York Times is this staunch conservative. Hakeem jeffries calls him an election denier, saying twice impeached former president ordered House Republicans to stop tom emmer. Anyone surprised they complied. Of course critics of hakeem are pointing back to 2018 where he called the 2016 election illegitimate saying the more we learn about the 2016 election, the more illegitimate it becomes. American deserves to know whether we have a fake president. All of that is happening in the background. The message from mike johnson was about Common Ground. Mike johnson gives a message about Common Ground and Hakeem Jeffries talks in a very partisan manner that is not totally surprising. Hakeem jeffries were people who spent years denying the legitimacy of the 2016 election falsely claiming it had been stolen by donald trump as part of Treasonist Collusion with russia. But it is interesting mike johnson was able to unite this really different conference. He got a unanimous vote. That shows how well liked he is. But it is true that he is very conservative. He cares a lot about spending. He cares deeply about the Department Of Justice and how its been weaponized to go against conservatives. These are issues that really matter for a lot of voters as well. Bret tyler, the first thing that was passed was this resolution to support israel and to speak out against the hamas attacks in israel. There are members who did not vote in favor of this pro israel House Resolution this afternoon. There were several nos. Put them up on the screen. Lot of presents. This seems to be a really big issue, even though the president made clear today where he stands and that he wanted to make also clear that the number of deaths being talk dz about by hamas, that he doesnt trust that. There is a divide within the Democratic Party about this issue. We saw that play out today on the house floor. We have seen that over the past few days, increasing calls from some of the most Democratic Party for a cease fire. That is a Dividing Line between the president and members of his own party. Vast majority of democrats are in support of the president s position on israel. But i think were starting to see more fissures in the party because of this issue. I dont think we will see any changes from the president in his steadfast support for israel. We are starting to see him put more pressure on israel to really lay out what its plans are in gaza. But youre right, the progressive wing of the party is becoming more forceful on this issue and growing in numbers there. Bret heres the former ambassador to israel on the iranian side. Look, joe biden gave a speech ten days ago. It was a great speech. He looked iran in the eye and said dont. Used that famous word dont. Then they did. Right . They attacked us. They attacked us in syria and iraq and theyre shooting at israelis in lebanon and were not doing anything about it. Bret brett hume said the evidence of deterrence, making sure iran understands there are repercussions for proxies attacking u. S. Bases. Is at least delayed. The warning of dont didnt work. So now they are slowly inching back towards the trump red line which he laid out when he was president , which is the method to iran if you kill a single american, we are going to strike iran. Iran will pay the price. Theyre sort of starting to inch towards that. Thats the only way you deter iran. We can see that iran is not deterred. We wouldnt have a War In The Middle East if they were. They wouldnt be firing at u. S. Bases in syria and iraq an at u. S. Ships. Joe biden needs to up the deterrence. It is to make clear what our red lines are. The trump red line is in effect. Just a few weeks ago Jake Sullivan was bragging about how the Biden Administration by rejecting the trump administrations Foreign Policy approach was seeing unforeseen success in the middle east. That things were working out very well in gaza, that things were calming down, that everything was going great with iran. I think it is clear the Biden Administration has rejected in whole the trump administrations policy of not prioritizing palestinian interests above other things. Were also seeing where that is causing problems. We are seeing where the approach with iran has not gone as well as the Biden Administration was trying to say just a few weeks ago. We have to set the record straight. What he said today does not walk back what he basically said. I think its only partial.
