Salvatore Carnesi of Belmar never worried about dangerous waves — he swam competitively and thought he could handle the ocean. But all that changed the day he got caught in a rip current, and it pulled him so deep into the ocean that he couldn't escape on his own and had to be rescued by lifeguards.
"I realized I wasn't getting any farther to the shore, and realized I needed help because of how strong and extremely difficult it was to get out of," said Carnesi, 39. "I remember at one point, it really did feel like something was pulling you down, but luckily I got out of it unharmed."
