A lot to get to this morning. George is in washington, d. C. , for that big moment for the president , his very first state of the Union Address. Yeah, amy, and, yeah, a group of us had lunch with the president yesterday before the address. The president was saying he really hoped it would be a uniting moment. Thats what he was going to try to do. But, boy, that speech he chose to give did not do the trick last night. It was about the iciest reception i have ever seen inside that house chamber. Democrats and republicans as divided as ever. And, george, the president even made news walking out of the speech. A comment he made after his address about that secret gop memo was caught on a hot mike. And a kennedy delivering the democratic response. Live, for the first time over. Well talk to joe kennedy in just a moment. George, fun being poked at him, the curse of having to give the state of the union response. It always seems to happen. This time the question was, was he wearing chapstick . Was it chapstick . Was it drool . Well talk to the congressman about that coming up. But first, jon karl starts us off. Good morning, jon. Reporter good morning, george. The white house had promised an optimistic and unifying speech. Much of the speech certainly was optimistic, but from my Vantage Point inside that chamber, this was not a speech that unified congress. For his First Official state of the Union Address, it was an upbeat, positive President Trump. The state of our union is strong because our people are strong. Reporter boasted about an american comeback. For many Years Companies and jobs were only leaving us. But now they are roaring back, theyre coming back. They want to be where the action is. They want to be in the United States of america. Thats where they want to be. Reporter and he highlighted low unemployment numbers for minorities. Africanamerican unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded. [ cheers and applause ] and hispanic american unemployment has also reached the lowest levels in history. Reporter democrats just werent buying it. They spent most of the night sitting silently even as the president called for bipartisanship and unity. We all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny and the same Great American flag. We proudly stand for the national anthem. Reporter the president laid out his priorities for the year. Some clearly designed to appeal to democrats. I have directed my administration to make fixing the injustice of high drug prices one of my top priorities. I am asking both parties to come together to give us safe, fast, reliable and modern infrastructure. Reporter and making his pitch for his immigration proposal, the president highlighted the horrific plight of two families whose teenage daughters were killed by the criminal gang ms13. Many of these gang members took advantage of glaring loopholes in our laws to enter the country as illegal, unaccompanied, alien minors. Reporter but the specifics of his plan to protect dreamers and tighten Border Security drew hisses and boos from democrats. Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives. Under our flag reporter as Congress Debates the fate of the socalled dreamers, President Trump had this message. My duty and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber is to defend americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities and their right to the American Dream because americans are dreamers too. Reporter the president took a hard line on north korea, highlighting the repressiveness of kim jonguns regime with the story of this man, a north Korean Defector who was tortured and had his limbs amputated before he managed to escape the brutal regime. Today he has a new leg, but i understand, seongho, you still keep those old crutches as a reminder of how far youve come. Your great sacrifice is an inspiration to us all. Reporter as the president sketched out his immigrant immigration proposal, there was one Campaign Promise that was noticeably absent, no mention whatsoever of the second half of his most repeated Campaign Promise that mexico would be paying for the wall. George. Thanks, jon. We are joined now by the congressman who gave the democratic response, joe kennedy of massachusetts. Congressman, thanks for joining us this morning. You know glad to be with you. Watching and the president last night it seemed like you were speaking to two very different countries, any Common Ground . I think absolutely Common Ground. And, look, i think part of what i was trying to articulate last night was that theres a whole, wide series of issues and values that unite americans, the second half of my speech was trying to target. Lets focus on that idea of those values, that vision, and that runs that runs through all americans. Thats not a democrat or republican idea. What is your pitch to everyone out there who says the president s got a point, the economy is healthy, its very, very strong, my 401 k is doing pretty well and ill start feeling a tax cut next month. Its clearly youre not going to be able to deny the fact that the stock market has gone up under President Trump and obviously thats a good thing. Id point out 50 of americans dont own a single stock and 80 of all stocks are basically controlled by 10 of American Families so, if were using the stock market as a barometer for economic success for the entire american country, then im not so sure thats the right metric not just the stock market, though. Low unemployment, wages starting to go up. The tax cut will come to many working class americans. This tax cut, some parts of that tax cut are going to come to many working class americans perhaps, which are also seeing a cut to the ability to states and localities to make some of the investments there i think americans have come to expect, and youre seeing a massive increase in our debt, which is going to, one, potentially lead to massive cuts to our social safety net including, remember, we spent much of the past year trying to destroy medicaid, which is another bedrock fundamental program that Many Americans depend on in order to get health care so press pause, understand that we are at a time of robust economic growth, fine, but lets try to find a way to make sure we leverage that for the benefit of all americans and not just wholly weighted towards those at the top. You spoke directly to the dreamers last night in spanish. The president spoke about that issue as well. Laid out what he calls his compromise plan. Are we going to get a deal before next thursdays deadline . Look, so we better get a deal. This is something that i feel passionately about and i think the vast majority of americans do. The vast majority of members of congress, democrat and republican, want to solve. We have two big problems, one, up until a couple days ago, no one knew where the president was on this because he kept saying Different Things to different people. Now weve got a plan that he has articulated. That plan as he knows is a nonstarter on capitol hill so i would urge the president and his administration to if they really want a deal to sit down and start hashing out to make one rather than throwing bombs and then saying, hey, its take it or leave it. Thats not how a deal is made. Youre the first youre the first member of the Kennedy Family to give a live response to the state of the union. How did it feel . That i didnt know. Look, i had fun last night. It was an extraordinary honor for me. It was a privilege to be able to do it and particularly to be in a Community Like fall river at a school like diamond with the students there that are its a pretty special place so i was honored to be there and hope that its a message that will resonate. It is a special place. The city where i was born. One final question, you know, you couldnt completely escape the curse of the state of the union response. Twitter had a field day with your shiny lips so, did you bring your chapstick this morning . Oddly enough, i decided to go a little bit light on the chapstick this morning. More on the coffee, light on the chapstick, which is probably a wise choice. Congressman, thanks for joining us this morning. George, thank you. So, amy, he followed all the rules perfectly. Were going to move on now to new developments in the russia investigation. President trump caught on that hot mike speaking about that classified gop memo targeting the fbi. Our chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas has those details from washington. Good morning, pierre. Reporter amy, good morning. It certainly looks like that controversial house Intelligence Report will soon be coming out but theres also new evidence that the special counsel is locked in and wont be distracted. Abc news learning that the fbi director and Deputy Attorney general were both at the white house pleading with the white house chief of staff john kelly to prevent the release of the Republican House Intelligence Report before they had a chance to make sure it does not compromise classified information. Those pleas apparently ignored as the president s mind appeared made up at the state of the union. Must release the memo. Dont worry. 100 . Reporter but for now, the memo still waiting to be reviewed as new evidence emerges that the special counsel continues to aggressively look into possible obstruction of justice. Good afternoon, everyone. Reporter sources tell abc news the special counsels office in recent days has contacted the former spokesman for the trump legal team, mark corallo, apparently wanting to know why he quit after only three months. Corallo left, sources say, in part because he was concerned that some in President Trumps camp were looking to unearth negative information about bob mueller and muellers apparently interested in explosive accusations in Michael Wolffs new book, which portrays corallo as concerned about the president s role in helping write a misleading statement aboard air force one about the nature of that Infamous Trump tower meeting between Campaign Officials and a group of russians. Wolff wrote, corallo seeing no good outcome believed the meeting on air force one represented a likely obstruction of justice. In retrospect, i probably would have done things differently. Reporter the president s son said initially it was about russian adoptions but it was actually set up for the Trump Campaign to receive dirt on hillary clinton. Dirt allegedly developed by vladimir putin. White house Officials Say the trump tower meeting provided no Meaningful Exchange but a critical question, what exactly did the president know about the trump tower meeting at the time . Did the president know the real reason the trump tower meeting was being set up when he helped write that misleading statement . George. Many more questions. Thanks very much. Lets get some analysis now from mary bruce, also our chief political analyst matthew dowd and, mary, let me begin with you. The president ending that mystery, nunes memo incredibly controversial. Looks like its going to come out and will explode on capitol hill in part because they wont release the democratic rebuttal. Yes, this is incredibly divisive. Democrats have their own memo they want released. Republicans say they need more time to vet that so they wont be coming out at the same time. Overall republicans say that this memo, those republicans who want this out, say that it shows political bias that may have undermined the beginning of this investigation, may have called into question the integrity of the investigation. Democrats say its nothing more than a political hit job. While the president says he wants that out, remember, just hours before the speech last night, the white house told us the president had not seen it and had not reviewed it yet. He said its 100 . Lets talk about the speech more. Matthew dowd, you were back in the oval office yesterday, of course, you used to work for president george w. Bush, but you met with President Trump yesterday and he said something to you similar to what he was telling network anchors, he hoped this would be a unifying speech. Yeah, he related in the course of the conversation how he thought he was going to compromise on immigration and the democrats would meet him and obviously reading that speech you didnt get any sense there was any room for compromise in that. I was thinking as we were leading in about this is the big the bad blood moon thats out the blue blood moon, the last time it was visible was in the 1860s and i think we are as divided now as we were then back when that rose the last time in the United States. I think the president and even i think the democrats would be it would be smart of them to look at what lincoln said in 1862, his first joint session speech where he said the dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate for the stormy present. The pile of difficulties we must all meet at this occasion. I think both parties need to get out of the trench warfare and figure out a way to come together and solve these problems. Boy, it doesnt feel like it will happen any time soon, and mary, last night on immigration, sure doesnt look like a deal is possible before that deadline next week. No, certainly not a deal, tied up with a bow. They may get closer. You heard the president say what he put on the table is a fair compromise. Thats not how democrats see it. Thats not even how many republicans see it. You have this looming deadline coming. They dont really seem to be any closer to finally getting this done and, george, you have to think about all those dreamers that were in the audience last night listening to the president concerned about their fate, whether they could be facing deportation. And the president said that could happen as soon as march 5th. Thank you very much. Back to michael. Thank you. What is behind it . Good morning. Yeah, so amazon teaming up with jpmorgan and Berkshire Hathway had an impact on Health Care Companies and insurance providers because these company, amazon leading the way are teaming up to create their own independent Health Care Company and, michael, whenever amazon introduces itself getting into a new category, theres a lot of fear in the market of what that could do to the preexisting companies. We saw it in the book space when amazon got in there and crushed the competition. Always the fear theyll do it again. Afraid theyll take it over. What is the big picture impact of this drop the last two days . You look at these last 24 hour, its a drop in the bucket compared to whats happened over the last year. The dow up 31 over the last year. Worldwide stock markets have surged over the last year and if you look at that typical 401 k , over the last year, michael, it is up almost 25,000. Pretty good. It was a late night last night and the president giving one of the longest ones ever exceeded by a couple of bill clinton state of the Union Addresses as you saw him in the chamber there. Icy reception from the democrats, the president went in saying he wanted some bipartisan deals, not clear that that speech did the trick. All right, george, well check back in with you. The president is asking for a little support, right, from his side, the republicans and also the democrats and so is this person. Its a bird on a plane, not quite. Take a look at what was wandering around Newark Liberty airport over the weekend, the socalled emotional support. Everybody needs a little support but its an emotional support peacock. His owner tried to bring it on board but united air lines said not so fast. A spokesman said they told the owner multiple times the bird would only be able to fly using the wings it was born with. It couldnt get on the plane. Yeah, can you imagine that in front of you or behind you or next to you . Or next to you. You cant tuck in the tail. They made the right call. We begin this first half hour with that abc news exclusive. Scott baio is here live and in just a moment he is going to address those explosive allegations made by his former charles in charge costar Nicole Eggert but, before we talk to him, we want to give you a closer look at the story. This morning, Nicole Eggert and scott baio both speaking out about allegations of sexual abuse. Nobody likes to be told what to do. Reporter eggert doubling down on her claims her charles in charge costar molested her while the two worked together on the 80s sitcom telling megyn kelly the abuse started when she was 14 and continued quite often through the age of 16. The issue with him is that he was our boss and, you know, he also was telling me, you know, you cant tell anybody. This is illegal. Ill go to jail. The show will be over. Everybody will be sued. You know, youll be out of a job and, you know, youll ruin everybodys life and its scary. Thats intimidating especially when youre that young. Reporter the allegations initially playing out on social media with eggert tweeting over the weekend, ask scott baio what happened in his garage at his house when i was a minor. Creep. Im going to knock down these false claims against me. Reporter baios refuting all her allegations in this post presenting past letters from his attorneys denying similar claims and citing eggerts past interviews about him as what he calls proof there was no misconduct. But baio did admit to one consensual encounter he says happened after she turned 18. I remember her calling me and asking to come over and coming in my house one time and seducing me. Reporter but eggert saying thats not what happened. She says it happened at her house when she was 17 and charles in charge was still in production. Did you initiate it or did he initiate it . He initiated it. Any doubt in your mind you were under the age of 18 . No doubt in my mind. Scott baio joins us live now with his publicist. Scott zyou just heard nicole. She says she has no doubt she was under 18 when the two of you had sex. You say she was 18 and you also say you have proof. I do. I do have proof. Charles in charge ended in the fall of 1990 and she said in the nik ritchie interview, the dirty. Com that we had sex when she was 17 and she said we had sex long after charles in charge was done. Nicole eggert was born in january of 1972. Charles in charge ended in the fall of 1990, so that would have made her an adult, 18plus, and she said that it happened long after charles in charge was done. Those are her words. Correct, and that was a radio interview with nik ritchie you bring up. Now she says it did happen when the show was filming. That she lied at the time to protect the show because thats what she thought she needed to do. She lied at the time to so im trying to figure out which time shes lying and which time shes not lying because the story seems to change quite a bit. So and i cant keep up with her quite honestly. I want to also bring up nik ritchie. He issued a statement. This is the man she was talking to and we should point out that he and eggert both share a manager but he now says nicole was distraught after that interview. She told me it was much worse than she described on air. She said he molested me as a child and i didnt know any better. I can vividly remember that statement. Its not one you would forget. What happened with you and nicole when she was 14, 15, 16 . Absolutely nothing. And i find it interesting, amy, that the moment that her first allegation that we had sex when she was 17 which is not true, as soon as that was proven to be 100 false, she comes up with a new story where something happened once a week for years. Now, i dont know if youve ever been on a sitcom set but on any given day on every day, and especially charles in charge, which was like a picnic every day, one of my favorite jobs ive ever done theres teachers, parents, family, crew, producers, my dad. So, how any of this could have happened is absolutely impossible and i find it i dont know how anybody can believe what shes saying when her first allegation of having sex when we were 17 had been proven to be 100 false and her story keeps changing. It comes up she makes up new things. By the way, im not the first person shes done this to. Okay. She got very specific about you. She says eggert said you had sexual contact with her touching her inappropriately when she was 14. She says, and you mentioned this, that it was not a onetime incident that that happened like once a week. How would you describe your relationship with eggert on the set . Was it strictly professional . Was it flirtatious . No, it was great. Amy, i can tell you and i mean this sincerely one of the most fun things ive ever done. Talented girl. We had a great time on the set. Everybody liked each other. Everybody got along. Nothing inappropriate . It was impossible because when a child is on a set, theyre either in school or theyre on the set with a teacher and their parents. So, you never alone with her. No, unless i was in a scene alone with her and directors and producers and crew guys are watching. Never. Never. Its impossible. And the amount of time that we spent on the show was you never saw her off the set . Off the set . I saw her in the studio a lot. Yeah, off the set. She mentioned your garage in one of her tweets. I have no idea what that means. I have no idea. So you cant just keep making up Different Things. I want to ask you about this. Adam who played nicoles brother on the show, reportedly said he witnessed inappropriate cuddling between you and nicole on the set and then adam karl who is credited with one appearance on the show tweeted he remembers her crying about you. Why do you think theyre saying that . Are they lying too . I dont know what theyre saying. I have no idea. I dont know why theyre saying it. I dont there were so many people on that set. Nobody said anything until and, by the way, nicole and i were friends after our only sexual encounter where she, she aggressively sought me out because she wanted me to be her first so that she would be good for her boyfriend, those are her words. You say she seduced you. Yes. You stand by that. Absolutely. You werent attracted to her. You didnt seek her out. Absolutely not. You didnt try to date her. Absolutely not. No. And Something Else of interest, you also told eggert to go to police if she had these allegations and she now says she may do just that. Do you have any concerns . No. Why would i have a concern over something that i didnt do . And rather than take your case to social media, where people tend to beat up people like me, why not do it through the proper channels instead of making the appearance because you put up allegations like that and it becomes like wildfire. Well, we know that you have certainly spoken up loudly and listen, i have to tell you one more thing, amy. I mean, and people are forgetting this. And its very important how this is affecting me. Why somebody would come after me, my reputation and stop me from doing something that i love doing that ive been doing since im 9 years old and more important than that, is my wife. And i have a 10yearold daughter. And my 10yearold daughter does not need to be hearing about this from friends at school these false allegations. Her job is not to defend me. Back in december we took a closer look at how parents can help their boys become respectful men. These series coming as so many parents have questions in the wake of those Sexual Harassment allegations in the news this seems like every day and Deborah Roberts is here and you met with a group of young girls in San Francisco. I sure did, michael. Hi. You know how they say kids say the darnedest things. I sat down with some 7 to 10yearold girls from different backgrounds who are just beginning to discover their voices in an open and honest way. We talked about what the world is like for them in 2018 and what it means to be a girl in school, at home and amongst boys. When you say somebody is a girl, what does that mean . Well, for the people who think boys and girls are different, i bet they would say that girls like pink and they like to wear dresses. Is that true . No. What does it mean to be a princess . Princesses act like theyre fancy and theyre perfect but nobody is perfect. Do you feel like boys and girls are pretty much equal. Yes. What if a boy is acting like hes better than you. What do you do . Maybe ill say i dont like what hes doing and if he could stop it. Girls are just the same as boys are. Watching from the room next door, the girls parents and child psychologist dr. David anderson. They had a very clear sense about girls and boys being equal. That was something thats really interesting. Boys are the same age hear a little more about gender roles or may believe theres certain things girls cant do or boys are not supposed to do. He also noted how the girls are learning to look out for one another. If somebody was being mean to your friend, could you stand up . I might say can you please be nicer. I did it to for my sister once. It felt good. When we asked boys the same question, the answer was, if it comes to it, you know, we may have to get physical. For the girls on the panel you didnt get a single answer that involved going into someone elses space. Reporter in fact guarding their personal space may be one of the critical rights theyre learning. I put my hands here and im like dont cross the space. What if somebody is giving you a hug and you dont want them to give you a hug. What can you do . You can say please stop because if you kind of give some a hug to somebody you dont know if they have lice and protect your own space. Even when they mentioned lice they said that was developmentally appropriate because at some level they were happy that was one of the biggest threats they were thinking about. If youre only worrying about lice youre keeping your kid protected. Reporter these girls are already imagining the future. What does it mean to be a powerful woman . To be strong. Dont show off and just do it. Its not like theyre a superhero or anything. They feel good about themselves and they theyre just strong. And when their parents joined in, no embarrassment here. Only pride on both sides. I thought it was really wonderful to just hear the girls talk about how girls are equal to boys and from my day and age if i had been interviewed if the answers would have been so across the board. Whats the hardest thing about raising sort of strong girls that are going to grow up to be strong, good women . At a younger age its all about mommy and daddy. Now its starting to become more and more my friends are doing this. My friends are, you know, showing me this sort of thing. As the kids get older parents as role models fade in power and there get to be new social pressures which is exactly where we want these ideals to stay strong. These girls are growing up in an era of powerful women and thats the biggest gift we can give them. A lot of girl power in that room. They are at an age where they arent so selfconscious and not unwilling to speak their minds. I asked them how they would react to boys who may act better or smarter or more powerful than they are and they told me, a situation, of course, a lot of women will complain about, the girls said they hadnt experienced it but if they did they would tell the boys to cut it out. As a mom i remember that age but the key is trying to keep the girls rooted in that kind of power and honesty and thats the challenge for parents. And im glad you bring this to us. As a father of 13yearold girls im panicking and very important and were going to bring in dr. Anderson who is going to help us. Dr. David anderson, the director of the Child Mind Institute and we saw you in the piece, doc. As you can see these kids 7 to 10 years old already forming their own identities at that age. How do you foster that growth . We like to think identity is about being exposed to diverse set of experiences and role models so following a kids lead and making sure they have lots of opportunities to engage in a wide range of passions whether its robotics or violin lessons or sports and thats kind of how we make sure that they then can pull out the various facets of their identities from those activities. You want your daughter to feel like they can do anything. Of course. I want the same thing but what are the Building Blocks . How do we give them confidence and the strength . What we Pay Attention to in terms of what we praise for our children. If we praise effort and kindness and perseverance, who they are, what they do and how they interact with others, were more likely to see those qualities start to amplify as they grow older. Want to avoid it around appearance or the idea of certain qualities only on their own. And creates stereotypes. These girls say they like to get dirty and want to be considered these light frivolous things. They didnt like that at all. Absolutely. You also say that parents, youre the role model for your kids. We all are but at a certain age, you hear the parents say they want to hang out with their friends. Peers. How do you balance that . Its a difficult change to see them move away from you toward peers. How do you support that and still be supportive of that without losing yourself . This is the toughest part for any parent. The beginning of this age range, you know, kids are really listening to their parents but near the end they start listening a lot to their peers and thats with we dont want it to be a push pull dynamic but follow the kids lead and meet them where theyre at and get to know their social world so as they get older they keep the lines of open communication and make sure that as they confront sex or drugs or alcohol parents can openly communicate with their kids about it. So theyre not just talking to peers but parents a little bit too. Not as much but a little bit. Rough with 13yearold girls. You two have really helped. But im stop panicking. Its going to be okay, michael. Were not done and have more coming up. I love what the young lady said, nobody is perfect. For her to realize that between 7 and 10 is pretty powerful. And hakeem, what makes a Lunar Eclipse so special . So, today, were experiencing a third in a series of supermoons and its also the second full moon of the month which makes it a blue moon and because the earth is passing into the the moon is passing into the earths shadow that it makes it a total Lunar Eclipse. Tell us what means to have a supermoon and also whats happening during an eclipse . Yeah, so what makes the moon super, it is bigger and brighter and the reason why its bigger and brighter is because its closer to earth. The moon isnt always the same distance as it orbits the earth sometimes its closer, sometimes its farther away. The closest we call perigee. When there is a full moon then its a supermoon and, yeah [ applause ] and also, when the moon passes into the earths shadow thats what happens during a total Lunar Eclipse so you might ask, why isnt the moon completely blacked out . Why is it red . The reason why is because the same reason why we have a blue sky and we have red sunsets. The earths atmosphere bends the light around the earth to make it fall on the moon and the blue light gets scattered out going in all directions and the red light makes it through so the moon appears red. I tell you what, hes like dancing around. Youre a super astrophysicist. Hakeem, thank you so much. We appreciate that. What accounts for that . Well, if youre standing on the moon, what youre seeing is the earth blocking the sun and the sunlight is coming through the earths atmosphere and its turing red just like the sun turns red at sunset so the only the red light is getting through. So, if youre standing on the moon you see the sunrises and all the sunsets on the earth happening at the same time. Reporter and unlike a Solar Eclipse, a lot can see a Lunar Eclipse. Thats right, a Solar Eclipse is when the moon blocks the sun the shadows on the earth, and you have to be in the right place at the right time. Here everybody can see this.
