San francisco added 39 cases, now at 622. While cases in Alameda County grew to more than 600. Here are the latest cases in lake and mendocino counties for our viewers there. Lake county reported two cases since sunday. Mendocino county reports four cases. And we are charting the total number of local cases on to this graph so we can take a look at the trend. This includes data for 14 counties, the bay are and beyond. And we showed a graph like that because were concerned about the peak. Can our medical systems handle the surge of cases . Do we have enough time to prepare . And what half . We have Team Coverage tonight. David louie looks at what life could be life post pandemic. But first, lets hear from abc7 news anchor liz kreutz about the latest projections showing we could reach the peak just one week from today. Liz . Dan, thats right. The state officials have been saying our peak will come in may, but a separate new updated projection shows we might hit that peak next week. We talked to a ucsf expert about it. We keep asking is california out of the woods. Experts say not yet, but all of the evidence would say that were on that flat curve that weve been talking about for a month or so, thats it. That good news comes from dr. Bob wachter, ucsfs medicine. He has been chronicling the daily fight on twitter. This, updated projections from university of washington researchers about californias peak. When the largest amount of patients will be coming threw our states hospitals. Initially they projected californias peak would be at the end of april. Now they say it will likely be next wak its not only when it happens, but its how high it is. And just as importtly shift in the date was the number of patients that theyre expecting. It was about half of what hey had projected a few weeks ago. Thats largely in part to all of us and our early shelter in place efforts. So whats it going to take for life to resume and get back to normal . Researchers recently outlined four key indicators in order to move on the phase two. They say states must show, one, a sustained reduction of cases for at least 14 days. Two, that hospitals have capacity to treat patients safely without crisis standards of care. Three, that authorities are able to test everyone who has symptoms. And four, that they have the ability to monitor confirm cases and trace those that are infeced. But even phase 2 isnt a complete return to normalcy. We get to a new phase, its a little bit more nuanced. Its like okay, some people can go back to work because theyre se nusinhat community or cases. And we talk about the peak. California is having a peak later than some other hot spots because we have had a more gradual company as opposed to a big spike. That means we have not been necessarily able to overwhelm our health care systems. So its been good news. Live from home, liz kreutz, abc7 news. Thankfully thats been the case. Elected leaders and Health Care Workers continue to struggle with the surge in covid19 cases, our minds wonder when life return to normal or will it . David louie continue ours live Team Coverage looking at what lies ahead for all of us. He is live working from home tonight. David . Hi, dan. There are fatalists who have accepted what cards were dealt, and there are futurists who try to pave the way for a time when covid19 either disappears or is addressed with a vaccine. The virus has exposed our shortcomings, but it also presents an opportunity to shape life after this pandemic. People talk about going back to norma the normal wasnt noal the normal wasnt good. Marina gorbis is executive director of instutr e future in palo alto, which over its 53year history focuses not only on forecasting the future, but also developing innovative solutions. What kind of future do we want to live in . What kind of future do we want to create, and what can we do to promote that vision of that desirable future . Covid19 has disrupted what we thought was normal. She says were at the first of three stages. The first is reaction to the crisis. Reset is second when we reassess and evaluate what happened and why. The third is reinvention. For example, the pandemic has revealed weaknesses in Hospital Capacity and gaps in who has health coverage. We conceive it as a private good. What were finding out is there no such thing as private health. My health is dependent on the health of the homeless person im next to. Anc hapod th ne for gnmt wits erable wherec people do not have 400 in savings in case of emergency is unacceptable. The institute is already looking at attrition in the ranks of Health Care Workers, and how california has had to ask retirees to return to help weapon the pandemic crisis. Should the estimated furloughed retail workers train for Health Careers with the future uncertain . I dont want to go back to normal. We need to create a new normal. Well, futurists say they knew this pandemic could happen. Now labs at the institute for the future will be looking into ways to address our weaknesses and to reshape our destiny. Along with how much it could cost, what changes we want to make, and how we Work Together to make them happen. Live working from home, david louie, abc7 news. Excellent. David, thank you. Weve posted davids entire raw interview with the institute for the future on our website. Its really interesting. Watch it and share it with your friends. Its on abc7news. Com. Were getting n details tonight of a disasterus sprdacr. A Data Analysis from the abc7 news iteam show house hundreds of flights from global hot spots brought travelers right here to the bay area, including sfo. Dan noyes joins us live from home with the story. Dan . Ama, we found hundreds of direct flights that landed at San Francisco international from hot spots like italy and spain in the months the pandemic started, but especially china. The abc7 iteam has analyzed more than 2700 flight records obtained from the tracking Service Flight radar 24. From december through march as the coronavirus outbreak ravaged china, more than 3200 flights left there on direct routes to at least 20 cities across the u. S. 469 flights to San Francisco international alone. Art reingold is head of especially de epidemiology. Yes, i think the data are important, but they basically reinforce something we already knew, which is if an infectious agent arises in one part of the world, it can move to other parts of the world quickly. Our data shows 50 direct flights to sfo from wuhan, the chinese metropolis where the outbreak is believed to have started in wild animal meat market. The precise number of infected passengers who came to the u. S. Is unclear. Such massive travel meant the flow of the virus here probably came quickly after beginning spread in china. Were talking about infectious agents inside people. And when the people travel, they take their infectious agents with them. President trump has repeatedly said his move to limit travel from china saved countless live. We did it very early. A lot of people thought we shouldnt have done it that early. The president ordered travel ban january 31st. But our Analysis Shows in february and march, at least 400 more flights direct from chinese airports to American Cities as the outbreak took hold in the u. S. Art reingold tells me blocking flights may have briefly helped stem the tide. But the reality is we already had multiple introductions of the virus into the United States, and the fundamntal problem is even once we knew the virus was here, we have not had a coordinated effective approach to dealing with it. Our data shows that weve had flights in the past few months from countries that were hot spots like italy and spain. That was 65 flights from spain, one from italy before the federal government shut down all air travel from europe. For the iteam, dan noyes, abc7 news. Dan, ama . Okay, dan, thank you so much. Well, its back. Today the grand princess cruise ship returned to San Francisco. Drew view 7 was there for its arrival. So was sky 7, in fact. Its been almost a month since the ship sailed into the port of oakland with 21 confirmed coronavirus cases on board. One organization, the National Alliance for filipino concerns is outraged that the crew is still on board, calling it inhumane. Abc7 News Reporter luz pena is live at pier 35 with the story tonight. Were very concerned about their health and safety, because theyve been on this ship now for more than a month. And those concerns intensified. On april 3, a Filipino Crewmember from the grand princess cruise ship died of coronavirus in a San Francisco hospital. A day te on april 4, hundreds of crewmembers who remain on the ship completed their quarantine period, but theyre still not going very upsetting. For one worker to die here in the San Francisco bay area, that should have never happened. Over a month ago, 19 crewmembers and two passengers a board the grand princess tested positive for covid19. Lo they were among passengers who had to be confined to their cabins. What got them through that was the kindness of the crewmembers. I know there was one gentleman who worked in one of the gift shops in the watch shop. He lives in china. He cant go home. Grand Princess Cruises confirmed theyre working with governments and the return of their crew. So far 438 crew workers were returned home, and they added the health and safety of our crew remains a top priority. Prior to the crew quarantine, testing was done on any crewmembers who showed symptoms of covid19. Crew with symptoms were medically disembarked or isolated on board until they met the cdcs definition for recovery. We just felt there was an end in sight for them. The grand princess has also confirm theyd have one crewmember in isolation still for covid19. That person will remain in isolation until april 9. The grand princess is expected to leave this port within the next 24 hours. In San Francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. Luz, thank you. Its been almost a month since the grand princess first sailed under the golden gate bridge. That was before the bay area had the shelter in place. Look at the side by side difference in traffic on the bridge. Interesting, isnt it . Back on march 9th, Public Schools had not yet closed. The nba was still playing games. Coronavirus had not even been declared a pandemic. The grand princess one of three princess cruise ships that have made headlines during the coronavirus outlook. Current social distancing means an additional hurdle for grieving families. They cant gather together to grieve. Stephanie sierra is in the newsroom with that story. Stephanie, its heartbreaking. Its very heartbreaking. Certainly a grim update, dan. Its hard because we never got to say goodbye to her. Mama te was a good person. Six days later came another challenge of the 100 relatives who wished to be present at the funeral. Michael . What most of us can expect is absolutely no slack from the government. Were expected to pay, and with just a couple of exceptions, were expected to pay on time. The irs delayed the tax deadline until july 15th, and the state soon followed. Thats frustrated some homeowners wondering why they havent received the same courtesy for property tax. It is difficult to understand that there is no extension for your side viewer. Te one 7 on the sentiment is a common one among many who have contacted me. Here in Santa Clara County Tax Collector margaret olea. Unfortunately, were Still Holding on the date for the simple reason the state has not given us any information to the contrary. We contracted 11 counties in the greater bay area including mendocino, lake and santa cruz counties. Only San Francisco and san mateo counties have agreed to extend the deadline until their offices are scheduled to reopen may 4th. Many homeowners elsewhere have already reached out expressing hardship, including alex eespiritu of oakland. Ive been calling to see if i could delay because if this goes on for two more months, my funds are basically going to dwindle. So ive posted a bunch of links on our website. Go check it out if you plan to appeal, and i would follow those instructions very, very carefully. Dan, ama . Michael, here is something i know a lot of people who dont live in san mateo and San Francisco want to know. Why did those two counties give a Property Tax Extension when no one else in the bay area did . There is a quirk in the state law and san mateo and San Francisco used it as a loophole. What it says is if the tax offices are officially closed, then they dont have to take your taxes. And now they can if they want to, but they dont have to. Well, those offices right now are expected to stay closed until may 4th. So theyve made that declaration, and you dont have to pay taxes in these two counties until may 4th. The other counties could do the same thing. They just have to make that decision. Well see. Michael, thank you. Ama . Thanks, dan. Only on abc7 news, exclusive access inside a Bay Area Hospital that is bracing for a surge in coronavirus cases. A new analysis from the university of washington predicts covid19 deaths will peak in about a week and a half. Abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen has a look at how one hospital is getting ready. For some, the silence in this selection of Good Samaritan hospital may be puzzling. Weve been planning for this since january 28th when we had our first patient. But for chief nursing officer mark brown, its all part of the process. This has been allowing us for two months to perfect those plans, make sure we have everything in place and ready so we can care for the patients coming true there . Good samaritan has already seen more than a quarter of the 1200 Novel Coronavirus cases in Santa Clara County requiring hospitalization. But with models now predicting that california will soon see a peak in deaths per day, hospitals are bracing for a surge. This floor would normally be full of patients recovering from surgery. But as you can see, thats not the case right now. With elective surgeries being canceled for the time being. As a result, the hospital has converted multiple areas to specifically care for covid19 patients. Each room on this floor is now equipped with a hepa filter which changes the air 12 times every hour, similar to that of a negative pressure room. That helps with preventing crosscontamination. This part of the building was also chosen with patients in mind. Their only contact is with our Staff Members and phone call. But having a window outside and being able to look, the bright light helps with the heals process. And outside is a full stock of ppe with a professional spotter to help Health Care Professionals get in and out of their gear, they can feel safe when they go home that theyre not exposing family or loved ones. Thinking hospital not takes chances when it comes to patient and provider safety. Theyre grateful for everything everybody is doing with the social distancing, the stayathome orders. Lets look after ourselves, as well as others. It will all be worth it. We can all do our part. So those on the front line can do their part. And when this is over, we will all, continue, to thrive. Its certainly hard keeping track of all of the changes going on in our world right now. So were hel date. Just in case youre counting, it is tuesday, april 7th, day 22 of our shelter in place in the bay area. Just over three weeks now. High School Seniors may have been counting the days to graduation, but they wont be getting the ceremony certainly that they expected. Not now. Its just one of many changes for the class of 2020. Abc7 News Reporter Wayne Freedman has that story. If emptiness could make a noise, it would be practically screaming at Redwood High School in marin county, or any other campus in california while theyre locked down. Places that should be hosting scenes of a quickening rush to summer are just the opposite. Its especially difficult for the graduating class of 2020. Pretty desolate right now. Were unique because our senior year was this the middle of a global pandemic. Luis esteves of Sonoma Valley high school and drake goodman, from redwood. They are separate but connected. Were trying to get as close as we can as possible given our resources. Theyre doing it through an Instagram Page they created ca class of 2020. Its a forum for graduating seniors to share something of this unusual experience. While we are disappointed, we are understanding. Rather than sulk around and resent the world essentially, i wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to really connect other seniors, make it so we have still the memories of a senior year, even though we cant be together. For any of us, this is an unusual situation. But especially for the class of 2020, most of them wont even be able to walk across the stage in graduation this year. Thats a first. And yet if any group is more suited to deal with a virtual social life, its probably them. So even though we are masters of the virtual age, we dont necessarily want to spend all of our time on the computer. From safe and sane in previous years to safe at home this year in front of a screen, its almost a native environment. Life is extremely unexpected, you know. Nothing is predictable. Well have, you noticed how clear the air is lately . Here is a live look at the beach at santa cruz. Harvard researchers are studying air pollution right now. Does longterm exposure to pollution make a patient more likely to die from coronavirus . The study looked at data from almost the entire United States and found that even a small longterm exposure to air pollution leads to a large increase in the coronavirus death rate. This is the First Nationwide study to show a statistical link here. And researchers here in the bay area are hoping to gather valuable insight from a recent drop in pollution levels attributed to the shelter in place orders as a result of this pandemic. It was the image that first alerted the world to a once in a lifetime side effect of the covid19 crisis, a dramatic drop in pollution levels over wuhan, china after the area began to effectively shut down. Shortly afterward, air quality researchers like professor ron cohen at uc berkeley predicted an eventual effect here in the bay area, which the epa recently pegged as a year to year drop in more than a third of pollution levels around the area. Much bigger than anything else weve looked at. Now professor cohen and his team have translated the numbers on nitrogen oxide into a bay area version of the wuhan map. Before and afters show n o2 levels dropping by more than half in parts of the bay area from the week before the shelterinplace order to the week it was announced. Cohen says a similar year to year drop show the fluke wasnt due to weather. There is a tremendous drop in the atmosphere. Soon other data will start to become more clear as well, allowing researchers to confirm not only how much pollution is in the air, but precisely where it comes from. We think we know how much comes from cars and how much from trucks and how much from industry. And all of those things suddenly changed by different amounts. Well be able to check. And a specific industrys potentially ramp down and back up again in the wake of covid19, it is perhaps a sad irony that a human health and economic crisis could provide powerful discoveries about an environmental one. A european satellite called sentinel measures the reflection of sunlight after the brownish colored n o2 gas as it bounces back into says which is the source of this recent data which is absolutely fascinating, getting to see how worldwide pollution has really declined since weve all been sheltering in place.
