Let me take you above right now east of where i am in Ocean Springs as we look from the drone along u. S. 90 you can see the debris and damage. The damage of not as bad as competed. The storm surge estimated to be somewhere between five and seven feet depending on the areas where the water came in. All of that water driven, of course, up on to the shore by the powerful winds. Kids that were clocked up to 90 Miles Per Hour. Lets take a look at some of that storm surge from last night. You can see overnight, as the water came in, it was not only pushed up on u. S. 90, about a lot of wave action. The department of transportation will have to go out along u. S. 90 to see whether any portions of the road are, indeed, under water. Overnight about 50,000 people did lose power. They are in the process of mississippi restoring that power. They say the good news is it does not appear there were any injuries. There were two fires that were sparked during the hurricane, making its landfall. The Fire Department did respond during the hurricane and fortunately they were able to put those fires out. Kerry sanders, thank you. Tropical storm nate is making its way to alabama with concerns that this storm surge could flood homes and cars. Kristen dahlgren is in mobile with more on that. Reporter we are on water street in downtown mobile, what an appropriate name this morning. This after a sixfoot storm surge came ashore here in mobile. The good news the water is reseegd. On we saw people trying to drive through this and getting stuck. Two families had to be rescued, two are closer to dolphin island. 50,000 people in alabama remain without power this morning. Power crews going to be getting out there at first light to try to get that restored as quickly as possible. But, again, the good news the water here appears to be receding. Center of circulation now just sitting over alabama, but still pulling up plenty of moisture from the gulf, and packing a punch. So what are the stats . What are the numbers right now . Well, it is a Tropical Storm, as opposed to a hurricane when it came ashore at about 1 30, major landfall around biloxi last night. Its location, 135 miles westsouthwest of montgomery, alabama. Winds now 45 Miles Per Hour. Just holding on to Tropical Storm strength but it will retain that strength for the next several hours and its movement, it continues to race to the northnortheast at 23 Miles Per Hour. So what next . Now it rolls through birmingham, just to the west of birmingham, as we head through this afternoon. So youll see strong winds and heavy raines then through the ohio valley. Monday into the northeast and by tuesday it is gone. But keep in mind its going to spread its share of sloppy weather. Were watching Tropical Storm warnings and Tropical Storm watches extending well to the north and east of where the tax reform is now. Keep in mind atlanta just outside of that area, so we could have some significant airport delays. Were watching for heavy rain and flooding, strong gusty winds, Tropical Storm strength and, of course, that storm surge weve all been concerned about. The good news is to the west, again, all of that concern beginning to subside, but were still watching places like mobile bay and along the alabama shore line where we could see a storm surge upwards of eight feet. I dont know well quite get that high but were keeping an eye on it. Through the panhandle of florida, three to five feet. Certainly possible. How much rain are we talking about . Well a significant amount. We could see some flash flooding and rainfall totals well over four to six inches and up to ten in some locations. Thats a quick look at the weather. A lot of people have said the fact that you guys why on tv on a beloved show once a week helped change the conversation in this country. Do you think thats true . Well, look, if it changed one conversation in one household, then thats a massive impact for us. That means a tremendous amount to me and i know that has happened for sure based on my personal interactions with people. My favorite is a kid coming up to me saying ive been friends with my friend, bill, you know, hes been my boyfriend and when i finally told them that bill wasnt my best friend but my partner and who i loved, this kids moms first reaction is, well, whos mitch, whos cam . And im like, okay. All right. Youre going to make me cry. You have this pillow, too. Im beginning to question our taste. Dont be ridiculous. We have great taste. Do people expect you to be cam when they see you . Oh, yeah. Do they think youre gay, sometimes . Sometimes. That was a really delicate thing for me to deal with in the beginning. I never wanted to be embarrassed if somebody thought i was, no big deal, but i also when the show started i was a single guy and i already had a hole to dig myself out of with a guy with girls, im a big guy. Im not like tom cruise walking down the street. I thought me being an iconic gay character on tv made me the hole a little deeper for me to dig out of. Nobody does now. The sheer senselessness of the mayhem. At some point we will become inoured to the violence. Perhaps we already are. Lest we get overwhelmed by the events in las vegas this week, fact is Mass Shootings where four or more people are killed are relatively common. There have been more than 1500 Mass Shootings in america since the day five years ago when 20 small children and 6 adults were killed at sandy hook elementary school. Yet Mass Shootings make up but a fraction of the gun deaths this year. The whole country is in shock this morning, matt. The latest horrific mass shooting. Elementary, unthinkable attack on young children. Reporter we kill about 30,000 people annually with guns. More than double that number get injured. Just over half the deaths are suicides. About 12,000 of the gun deaths every year are homicides, and at least half of those are young men, mostly young black men. There are more than 300 million guns in america owned by about 1 3 of us. Millions more are sold every year. Guns are pretty easy to get. There are places in our country where its harder to vote or to get Mental Health treatment than it is to buy a gun. The American Medical Association has declared gun violence a Public Health issue, like aids or zika or the flu. Think of gun violence like a virus for which there is no immunization program. Despite that fact, the centers for Disease Control havent done a serious study of gun violence in decades. Somehow, it seems, when they try to mount a serious study of gun violence, the funding gets blocked by congress. Yes, blocked by congress. Theres a shooting. Theres a shooting. It really illustrates the reality that we live in now. Well, the thing is as it unfolded last sunday night and into monday and we watched and there was this feeling of helplessness, right .
