Death of a taxi cab driver. More on the arrest. Good morning, guys. You know, were expecting to get another update from San Mateo County Sheriffs Department at about 6 00 a. M. But as you mentioned, they have arrested a suspect. The suspect is in custody in connection to another homicide in this area near skyline boulevard. It remains to be seen if this may be connected to the death of that taxi cab driver. Were getting you details on the death of that victim. The taxi cab driver is the 32yearold from pacifica. An american citizen born in yemen. He got a call at home on monday night from someone that needed a ride. He told his family including his 4yearold daughter that he would be home in a couple of hours but at around 11 00 p. M. On monday night, a San Mateo County sheriffs deputy found his dead body on the side of the road here along skyline boulevard near highway 84. I want to show you new video. This is what our crews got from overnight. Investigators combing the scene. Now its going to remain closed. Well have more from the scene and hopefully more information in the next half hour. Youll remember we told you about a deadly shooting this time yesterday. And theyre still looking for answers. Today in the bays Chris Sanchez is live for us in san jose with the latest on this, chris. Well, hi there, we know that a 12yearold girl was hit by shattered glass coming from the window in her car but neither her mother who was driving nor she were hit by the bullets that were fired directly at their car. This is where the mom pulled off to safety after someone shot at her car while driving along side her. You can see a bullet hole in the side of the car. Neither the mom nor the daughter could give them an exact description of the suspect nor the vehicle. Now that happened on 680 near the 101 interchange in san jose but if you see that other location on the map there on your screen, thats 680 near landess avenue and thats where a man was shot dead in his car late monday night. He was 33yearold matthew. His family told us he was on the phone with his girlfriend when he told her that he thought somebody might be chasing him. His mother now wants the gunman to turn himself in. I lost my mom. I lost his dad. Im a single mother. Now i lost my one and only son. Now the chp believe both of these are isolated incidents so theres no dangerous in the publish at large driving on 680 this morning but they do want the publics help. One suspect in an officer involved shooting and chase through the east bay is still on the loose. We covered this as breaking news yesterday morning for you on today in the bay. Shooting was in heyward and the manhunt was close to the oaklandsan leandro border. One suspect was arrested and another ran from the scene. Theyll continue to follow up on lea leads. That suspect is gone by now. No officers were injured in the shooting. San francisco takes another step toward becoming the first u. S. City to ban ecigarette sales. They voted unanimously to block sales until theres fda approval. This happened yesterday. The goal in this case is to curb vaping by teen. It sends a strong message to parents. Our message to parents is we stand beside you. It still needs final approval from the board of supervisors. This morning, the ghost ship warehouse fire trial continues. Prosecutors got their chance to grill max harris yesterday. They are charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. He told the jury it was meaningless and he only used it to sound official. The mother of a 32yearold musician that died in the fire believes he was coached by his attorneys. I think hes been very well trained into lying and what to say and whatnot to say. Hes not trying to be evasive. Hes being extremely forth coming. He did not organize the par that crew dozens to the warehouse on the night of the fire. But temperatures will be cooling off heading into the evening. Some here we are at 10 30 this morning. We have low 70s. Well be in the lower 80s by afternoon. Heading into the afternoon some spots will be heating up but it does stay cool only for the 60s in the coast and in the north bay the 70s. And then mid to upper 80s in a few spots and then cools off heading into tonight. Its also dollar day if youre going to be going to the as game trying to help you out with a plan and things to do with the kids now that they are out of school. Low 70s throughout the day. Its going to be a really nice day out there at the coliseum. Our winds will come in more from the southwest and then as the winds pick up heading into the day and our wind speeds feeling a little bit more breezy today and then going into this evening as well. We expect to get an update from the San Mateo County Sheriffs Department in about half an hour to see if the suspect in custody in connection to that other homicide in the area is connected to the death of that taxi cab driver. You can see investigators coming out to the scene here on skyline boulevard. This taxi cab driver is the 32yearold from pacfifca. Hoe got a call on monday night from someone that needed a ride. He told his family he would be home around a couple of hours. A deputy that was actually on a route to a nonemergency call found his body along skyline boulevard near highway 84. Now a friend had this to say about his friend. He would start working. Now skyline boulevard behind me as you can see will remain closed as these investigations continue. We expect to hear from the Sheriffs Department at the top of the hour. Thank you. 5 33 and now to a vote that could have a big impact on transportation in the south bay. Workers are considering hitting the ticket line due to a dispute with a transit unit. Theyre waiting for a judge to approve pg and es at the time settlement. Theyre blamed for sparking wildfires. The town of paradise will get 270 million. The judge may still be approved by the judge overseeing pg and es finances. Now to continuing coverage of the homeless crisis in the bay area. It was a packed house in last nights city counsel meeting. People were there to discuss the proposed site it would house 45 people that need services to find a home, find a job and receive counseling. Its bringing out strong feelings on both sides. Where do you think theyll be using their drugs. You need to place them out of a residential area. They just want to have a home. They want a place where someone will help them get services. Now the city is exploring about a dozen other sites. The next meeting is scheduled for july 9th. Controversy continues to brew this morning over a mural at a San Francisco high school. Its all over a depiction of a scene in George Washingtons life. Theyre considering covering the mural because of its depiction of dead native americans and African American slaves. The images set a demeaning tone and others say the mural provides an important history lesson. Its a lot of emotional stress. One of the reasons why its hard to even go to school sometimes is because i know those murals are in the lobby. In San Francisco, we should be teaching about the mural and what it means. I as a half native American Indian see no problem with the mural. The board is considering covering it with a curtain or painting over it. Each option is expected to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The board is expected to vote on how to address the controversy later this month. Now we want to get back to that big vote that could have a big impact on transportation in the south bay. Workers are considering hitting the picket line due to the dispute with the transit unit. Riders say theyre closely watching todays vote. Good morning, we were contacted by riders that are concerned that this vote may effect their service. They both wouldnt comment on camera regarding the vote but they have the information saying its been negotiating with the union that includes light rail operators and mechanics since last august and theyre at an impasse. It includes 11. 1 wage increase over 3 years and 3. 1 lump sum payment spread over three years to help offset the pension contribution theyll make toward their benefit. One passenger tells us that riders have already seen an impact on service by a possible kick out by about 30 drivers but we still have to confirm that with the union. No delays through the maze. An earlier crash right near the highrise. People call wednesday hump day sometimes. I want to call it highrise day. High clouds up there. Right around the corner now. Its going to be heating up this weekend. Well still have the wide range in temperatures with the coastal area in the 60s. The bay in the low 80s and upper 80s in the inland valleys very much like today. It will be slightly hotter as we head toward the end of the weekend but still a lot of sunshine and some places where you can go and cool off like santa cruz. You have the surf city classic happening this weekend and some amazing weather. Although it does start out with some clouds. Once it clears out well be right at about 70 degrees. If youre going to lake shasta this weekend its going to be warm up there. At least friday you have a break from the very hot temperatures. In the trivalley we still have the Alameda County fair this weekend and maybe friday will be the most comfortable this weekend. Well be in the 90s going through saturday as well as well. It happened before 11 15 last night on bristol wood lane on san jose. This new video shows firefighters working to put that fire out. No one was hurt and the cause is under investigation. The American Red Cross is helping that displaced family. In a historic move governor newsome is apologizing for the genocide of native americans. He sat down yesterday and issued an executive order formally expressing regret of instances of violence throughout the states history. The Governor Also Announced the truth and healing counsel which is the first of any state in the country. Its purpose is to provide a way for native americans to clarify the record and provide perspective on the troubled relationships between tribe and california. The epa is expected to release a new plan that benefits coal plants. Instead of phasing out coal burning plants it will encourage power plants to burn less. This comes after americas air is not getting cleaner. 5 44, another former white house adviser will face a congressional hearing today. Hope hicks was there during some of the most crucial moments in the trump presidency. Yeah. Including the moment President Trump drafted a letter explaining why his son and his Campaign Team met with russians only to have that explanation blow up in their face when donald trump jr. Released his own explanation. Hope hicks has been with President Trump since the campaign. Even actually she became White House Communications director. That would be sean spicer and Sarah Huckabee sanders boss. She left the white house last year. Hicks was there when the president denied pay offs to women that turned out not to be true. She was there for the firing of jim comey as well so theres lots of questions to be asked. Whether or not she will answer is unclear. She met with congress before testifying she told white lies for the president but this one is going to be behind closed doors. We will quickly see a transcript. The white house said they ordered hicks not to answer certain questions claiming she is immune but has not yet claimed executive privilege. President trump launched his 2020 campaign in florida yesterday with a rally. Heres the president. Were going to keep fighting for everyone across this country. With every ounce were going to keep making America Great again and then again we will indeed keep America Great. Were waiting to hear more about who will lead the Defense Department after Patrick Shanahan with drew his name for the position. He was the acting secretary of defense. He had run into questions about his home life after the Washington Post reported his wife had been arrested after a domestic dispute call to the police a number of years ago and his son also faced Domestic Abuse issues accused of attacking his mother in a separate incident. Nbc has not independently verified the incidents but shanahan says they were painful and deeply personal family situations from long ago and he doesnt want them dredged up in a hearing.
