Yesterday, two of the wounded victims describe the moment they were hit by bullets and the man who rushed them to the hospital. They wanted to thank him but only knew his first name. John. But the people he rescued disagree and theyre grateful even if they didnt know exactly who he was. And so i wanted to thank john, hopefully thats his name. It was a chaotic terrifying scene on sunday, a gunman shooting into the crude. She was hit in the shoulder and this woman was shot in the back. They were rescued and driven to the hospital by a mystery man named john. He took us to the hospital. We were fortunate enough not to get there by ambulance, which was huge for us. I just stayed and did what i hope anyone would do for my loved ones. John, known as a local hero, as an educator and a man who helps veterans with issues. The festival heroics were different. Immediately, i saw them bleeding and they told me they were shot. I thought, he must be nearby. I mean, im going to start shaking. It scared the heck out of me. Still, you took them. I felt like when they said weve been shot, i could see the blood, i thought i got to get them to a hospital, to a doctor. After the victims spoke to the media yesterday, he got a chance to talk to them via social media. Im so glad youre doing well, made my day. I was sitting at my desk literally with a big smile and i was crying. It was over whecwhelmoverwhelmi reporter it was overwhelming. One thing john pointed out. He said one reason he left so quickly after he knew they were safe, he wanted to get back to his own family who was also at the festival but were now home safe. It was promoted in an ad in a local Law Enforcement magazine. You can see it there. Raffle tickets 20 bucks with the proceeds supporting the Police Department chaplain program. I understand how people within our community or the community of gilroy could cause stress and grief and that wasnt our intent. Thats exactly why we chose to stop the raffle immediately. They sent about 70 officers to gilroy on sun supporting them then and now. The p. O. A. Will not raffle off a weapon. More Police Officers, more surveillance. Thats fremont is beefing up the security for the outdoor festival in the wake of the deadly shooting at the garlic festival. It drus nearly 400,000 people. The chamber of commerce says police are devoting every resource available, including undercover officers, steel barricades to stop cars from plowing into crowds. A surveillance tower and much more. Tonight it is surrounded by construction zones. The city is building a bathroom next to the memorial. That is not going down well with vets. The city of antioch takes pride in patriotism. Signs of that on display all over town. Its a patriotic town. It really is. Vets say theres nothing patriotic about the citys plans to put in a bathroom at the foot of their downtown memorial. In fact, construction on the grant funded restroom has already started. Vets say it really stinks. I just dont understand, why would they do this . Why would they dishonor our veterans this way, by putting a toilet next to the memorial . Theres a lot of homeless down there. Theyre going to use it as a hangout. Theres going to be needles in the bathroom and trash the area right therement. The commander of antiochs vfw post 6435 says if the city doesnt change it plan, expect a boycott. He says veterans will start taking part in the memorial and veterans day events. Were going to show up in force for the city council meeting. The Services Director are working with the vets on a solution. She says the city wants veterans to know they didnt mean any disrespect. We do respect and admire everything youve done for this country and we will continue to work with you for a solution that benefits both parties. Now, one possible solution the city is working on is moving this Veterans Memorial right across the street to this roundabout area. A hate crime or vandalism . Some city leaders say both. Residents woke up early wednesday to see graffiti which included racial slurs. Witnesses led detectives to alvin brown who has a personal relationship to one of the victims. A local lawmaker is frustrated that hes not charged with a hate crime. Whether its an African American male, white male, doesnt make a difference. When these type of things happen and theres any type of an indication that its a hate crime, its not acceptable. The District Attorney has last word on whether brown will be charged with a hate crime. In addition to multiple counts of felony vandalism. Fbi agents recovered a weapon stolen from an agents car in oakland. The semiautomatic rifle was stolen about three weeks ago across the street from the Oakland Coliseum near that innout burger. Thieves stole bullets and an fbi jacket. The fbi will not say whether those items were also recovered. As we showed thu video last night from the sky ranger, a brushfire on rancho view road in lafayette. You can see the fire so close to those homes. Its still dangerous every time. While mom, her son and a dog are okay, a firefighter was hurt. Continuing lowering. Reporter firefighters used ropes at the top of the 300foot cliff as they tried to rescue a mother, her son and their dog stuck 20 feet down. They started by bringing the 8yearold boy to safety. We lowered him at the beach level and we had some high tide concerns, but once we looked at the tide log, we knew we had a window of 30 minutes. Next crews brought the mom and the lab down to the beach. One firefighter was injured during the rescue. Hes getting looked at. He was the one that ended up rescuing the mom and the boy. Mom and son were not hurt. Here they are walking back up from thebeach, feeling thankful. Our rescuers are wonderful. Firefighters believe the mother and son might have chased after their lab. With that, they have a warning to anyone who gets in that situation. Do not go chase after the dog. Do not try to rescue the dog. Please call 911. Firefighters say they typically do cliff rescues here about once a month. They want to remind people, always stay on the trails. That firefighter is expected to be okay. Two horses found abandoned in a parking lot. A horse trailer showed up last tuesday at the home depot in windsor. Inside, these two malnourished horses. Animal control says a thief stole the horses from a ranch in Santa Clara County and dumped them in the parking lot with no food or water. The horses are recovering in sonoma county. But two of them are coming down. Like steve and ann, andre, the Preservation Action Council of san jose is not happy about it. For a city founded in 1777, we have very little of our historic architecture left. Century dome theaters, 21, 22 and 23 next to the Winchester Mystery House were designed by a San Francisco architect in the 60s. In 2014, the San Jose City council granted century 21 historic status. So it is the only one of the three that wont be demolished. Its sad to lose the 22 and 23. But we are glad that century 21 is a city landmark, as it should be. We are learning more about the moments leading up to the shooting. The gunman lived with his father in this suburban neighborhood in west gilroy. Across town, two miles away, Law Enforcement found the shooters car parked. Police believe he made his way across a creek and then cut a hole along this fence to get into the festival. Whats going on . Once inside, he started shooting into the crowd. Getting reports of a shooter at the garlic festival. Im in the area, it sounds like theres an active shooter in the park. People are running. New information if he initially came in from the creek along the boundary. Three people were killed. 25yearold trevor irby. 13yearold Kayla Salazar and 6yearold steven romero. Alberto is stevens father. Son had his whole life to live. He was only six. Within one minute of the gunfire, Law Enforcement was there shooting back. Gilroys police chief, scott smithing. The suspect was hit multiple times. It put him down. Once he was down, he was able to get a round off and shot himself. It sounds like that round was to the head. A federal source involved in the investigation tells us its one of the fastest takedowns during a mass shooting. While police were initially on the hunt for a possible second begun man. They now believe the teen acted alone. They were able to spot him on security video by himself in several stores the day of the shooting. Police wouldnt say where but weve confirmed this 7eleven a few blocks from the shooters home was asked to hand over Surveillance Footage to Law Enforcement. Nearly a week after the shooting, the motive is still unclear. It might be in part because of the difficulty unlocking some of his electronic devices. Federal Law Enforcement source tells us they still havent been able to get into them. Thats an issue that weve seen the last several years. Thank you, by gad. One man is paying tribute with ink.
