Our janelle wang is here with some of those answers for you. Raj and jessica, there is a gravg circulating on social media now. It is from the cdc. People wanted us to break it down, flattening the curve, slow the spread of the virus. This is where the pandemic would be if there was no intervention. Wed have a huge spike in cases. It would overwhelm the health care system, meaning more deaths and serious illnesses. The cdc wants people to do their part even if youre not scared of getting the virus by washing your hands and laying low. That will help reduce cases and cause less strain on our health care system. That is the goal. Now, people are also asking, can you be reinfected with the virus . Doctors in china and japan say yes, theyve seen people reinfected and test positive. Normally with Infectious Diseases you develop an antibody that makes you immune to a specific strain. Chinese doctors say that antibody does not last long so you could be susceptible again. Other Health Experts say its too soon to say. Maybe the patients felt better but didnt fully recover from the coronavirus. So when they got tested again it was still positive. The cdc also says its too soon to say what immunity covid19 patients have. You can send us your questions about covid19 on social media. You can also find full coverage on our website, nbc bay area. Originally the tsa refused to provide any of that leaders and journalists including us at nbc bay area demanding the federal government for answers, to really step up here. Nbc bay areas laura joins us from sjc with the very latest. Laura. Reporter raj, this is the terminal they worked in. This is where thousands of southwest and Alaska Airlines passengers arrive and depart. And tonight city workers say this critical new information should have been made public a long time ago. Two days after learning three tsa agents at terminal b in sjc tested positive for the coronavirus, a few new specifics. The city of san jose says the workers screened people at checkpoint b during the night shift between noon and midnight on february 21st, 26th and on march 2nd. Reporter a community that seems increasingly concerned about visiting an airport. I am concerned that its probably much greater than we think it is. Reporter laura sambol, nbc bay area news. Well, a milestone of sorts for thousands of passengers quarantined aboard a cruise ship docked in oakland. The final, 476 passengers on that grand princess are expected to be off the ship by sundown tonight, so presumably any moment now. That doesnt mean the ship is heading back out to sea, though. At a News Conference today, newsome said nearly 1100 crew members will stay on the ship which wont leave oakland until sunday afternoon. After that it will sit in the bay a few days. One of the passengers who was moved to travis air base earlier this week gave us a sense of what the final passengers must be feeling. Getting off the ship was one of the things that we were looking forward to. Im sure theyre going to be relieved for that. But anxiety is going to set in knowing that theyre going to be confined into the hotel. So far, 21 people from the ship have tested positive for the coronavirus. Governor newsome says today he expects more positive results in the coming days. Now, some of those passengers are being quarantined on the peninsula. A hotel in san carlos is housing patients. The first wave arrived by ambulance today. We are told these people arent confirmed to have the coronavirus, but have exhibited mild symptoms that could be again, could be linked to the virus. The hotel is not in a residential area and is vacant, except for those Cruise Ship Passengers that were bussed in. One of the Big Questions here, where can you get tested for coronavirus. There are simply not enough testing kits. Here in the United States testing is still largely reserved for older people with Underlying Health problems and those surf from a high fever. So why arent there more tests available . Lets bring in our steenier Investigative Reporter bigad shaban. Reporter here in San Francisco and across the u. S. , testing kits for the coronavirus are still limited. In fact, the number of people tested over the past two months here in the state is still far fewer than what south korea has been testing in a single day. I am surprised this is not more of the national conversation. We need to focus in on these tests. Reporter governor newsome says many of the test kits the federal government delivered to california are missing critical components which he argues is presenting the state from testing more people. I think its very much in line, these tests with youre going to the store and purchasing a printer, but forgetting to purchase the ink. Reporter according to the centers for Disease Control, the u. S. Has tested more than 11,000, but thats specimens, not patients. Just one person may have to give up to three specimens to be tested for coronavirus. That can include a swab of the nose, throat or coughing up phlegm into a cup. So just how many people have been tested in the u. S. Is unclear. But we do know the number of tests done in america is still far fewer than other countries. South korea discovered its first case about the same time as the u. S. , but has managed to test more than 200,000 people. Even opening up drivethru Testing Centers where you just pull up and get swabbed. But in the u. S. , only those suffering from a fever and cough are getting priority. Just being exposed to someone who has the virus isnt enough. Thats because there just arent enough tests to go around. The cdc created americas test for the virus which is then distributed to Public Health labs across the country. But with growing demand, universities and private lab including quest and lab core design their own test to diagnose even more patients. By next month, quest says it expects to perform tens of thousands of tests a week in the u. S. Lab corp. Tells us it is after already doing several thousand tests a day. For some perspective, there are more than 7 Million People in just the bay area. More than 300 million throughout the u. S. And so for now, anyone hoping to get tested must first get a referral from a doctor or an order from the health department. With the investigative unit, im bigad shaban. Okay, bigad. The disclosures and test kits bigad were telling us about, those are tests for the coronavirus travelers found u. S. Airports mostly empty today. Many say there was a lot of confusion about president trumps new european travel ban. That 30day ban which starts tomorrow will only apply to foreign nationals trying to get to the United States. U. S. Citizens are free to reenter the country but they must selfquarantine once they arrive. President trump is also proposing financial help for the sick, Small Businesses and a payroll tax cut. As lawmakers scrambling to find Common Ground on that. On capitol hill the shortage of the testing kit is becoming critical. Anybody getting easily the way people in other countries are doing it, were not set up for that. Now more than 1300 cases of coronavirus are reported in 45 of our 50 states. Among the busiest people in the country, the cleaning crews, especially those specialized deep cleaners, theyre at our offices, our schools, restaurants and everywhere. But what exactly do they do . Our business and tech reporter scott budman takes us behind the scenes. Reporter they may be among the busiest of businesses these days. More even owe and associates, a south bay company specializing in the deep clean. I would say in the past couple of days its been astronomical, through the roof. Reporter busier than ever with tech companies, schools and other buildings looking to protect people from coronavirus. They come in, suited up to stay safe, with the cdcapproved spray streaming through their electro static sprayer. The goal . Clean and disinfect everything before you come back in. We come in. We completely clean your surface areas, you know, your touch points, door handles, coffee stations, kitchen areas, rest rooms, desks. Reporter and gyms. Anywhere we hang out that could make us susceptible. And the disinfectant will kill the coronavirus. Reporter and i should mention that while they say their process can kill the coronavirus on a surface, it cant keep the virus from returning into a building if an infected person comes back to work. In san jose, scott budman, nbc bay area news. We are seeing a lot of these crews. Thank you, scott. We are putting together a new special, understanding the coronavirus. Hear about it. Im consumer investigator chris chmura. Thats next. Well, sadly it doesnt take long after a disaster or in the middle of a crisis for opportunistic scammers. Happens all the time. Consumer investigator chris chmura is here with expert advice on how do you keep yourself safe from scammers. Its really so shameful that this happens. You know what, theyre starting to call us. A skeptical viewer today answered one of these calls, these robocalls, and tipped us off. The caller who talked to him said they worked for a Canadian Pharmacy and they had a coronavirus treatment to sell him. So we called the number a few times ourselves and listened to the same spiel. The agent was ion willing to be recorded for broadcast. We talked ten minutes. What exactly is it your company is saying this will do for coronavirus . I told you it will reduce the risk. It would reduce the risk. Yes, slow down the progress of coronavirus. Couple red flags here. First the centers for Disease Control said no medicine to prevent coronavirus is available anywhere. They are still under development. Another red flag, that Canadian Pharmacy was using a kansas phone number. Finally thanks to some quick web searches, we discovered he was selling a malaria treatment. The cdc says its common in india which is where one of ion colleagues conceded they were calling from. We pressed ion about his companys calls and how they contradict what Health Officials have said. He admitted his products dont treat coronavirus. Bottom line here, follow the federal trade commissions advice. Ignore these offers. Wait for word from Health Officials. Real information from them about prevention and treatment. Please let us know if you see any suspicious sales pitches. Go to nbc bay area. Com. Go to the main menu, then click responds or give us a call, 88896tips. Ten minutes he hung on the line with me. How much are they selling it for out of curiosity . He was looking for 80 bucks for 30 pills. Another woman wanted 180 for i believe 40 pills. Interesting. Certainly all bogus pills here. Theyre not working for coronavirus. For malaria, great. But not coronavirus. Thanks. Thank you, guys. Well, stay with us for continuing coverage of this pandemic. As we have been telling you throughout this newscast, we have a new edition of understanding coronavirus. In that were going to cover topics including how you can talk to your kids about the outbreak. Were also going to talk to a doctor about addressing concerns like should you go to the movies, can you go out to dinner, should you be going to the gym. Were going to ask the doctor all those questions. Thats coming you. That doctor is going to join me in about 15 minutes and were going to ask her all those questions. All the day to day things were doing. Restaurants and movies. This weekend when i go out, where should i be going or should i be staying cloistered in my house. I just put those wipes i had i had them from previously because theyre sold out. I put them in the car. Now when i leave a store or something how often should i be cleaning my house. Were going to ask the doctor all that. All our kids are going to be home next week, the next several weeks. That leads to our weather. Whats happening outside, do we have to stay inside . The weather nor cast probably going to keep us indoors as we head through the next seven days. Well get you squared away on the incoming rain and also snow. And we have all been asking for that rainfall, right . Nothing in february at all, but now its coming on a time where a lot of us would like to be outdoors getting fresh air. Nonetheless, whats a little bit of rainfall even if you want to head outside. Well start you off with tomorrow morning, and we do have some nice cold temperatures to start. Mid and upper 40s. Little bit of fog near the coast, bay and peninsula. So just be aware of that. Otherwise not a bad start here for us. Have you at 49 in the peninsula, 46 trivalley, south bay at 47. For the east bay, 46. Patchy areas of fog. Also little bit of that fog in San Francisco and 48. And 43 for the north bay. Through tomorrow numbers dropping off 2 to 5 degrees. Thats because we have an approaching storm system off to the north. So numbers getting shaved down a little, but i think it will be noticeable. Were still above average. I think youll like whats coming our way tomorrow. 72 in san jose. 71 in morgan hill. Winds will be picking up as well. As we head through the micro climate, keep your eye on this. Breezy, 25 miles per hour. Over here through the east bay, contra costa,al immediate a county, 72 pleasanton and oakland at 66. For the peninsula 68 red wood city, 70 in palo alto. Headed to the ocean to get some of that fresh air blowing in against your face, make sure to bring a jacket. 57 degrees. San francisco winds out of the southwest at 20. Well have it down to 55 in the marina. When the wind kicks up it will feel like the 40s. For most locations back to the 60s except for napa. Im holding that at 70 degrees tomorrow. So this will be the warmest day in my sevenday forecast and also the driest. As we push it into the weekend, i want to make sure i give you an early preview of what were seeing now. There have been subtle changes overall for saturday. Were starting to get things going. It will be spotty and scattered rain developing on saturdays forecast. And also that snow beginning over the sierra. By saturday night into sunday, thats when well likely see the more consistent rainfall starting to move in across the bay area. And it would be widespread from the north bay down to the south bay. Best thing this is going to do for us, at least most immediately it helps keep pollen down.
