Thank you for that. Public Health Experts warn that the coronavirus pandemic is going from bad to worse. President trump says hes not going to wear a mask despite the new recommend digs that americans should do it. The president is pointing a finger at the states saying its up to them to make sure they have enough ventilators and emergency medical supplies to go around. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is at the white house this morning with more for us. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, peter. The president is clearly reluctant to embrace this new advice to protect ourselves and others from the threat of the virus and he is struggling to navigate the competing request and demands coming from states who are looking for that critically indemand medical supplies. The president struggling with that across the country. Although President Trump announced that new cdc guidance on wearing a Face Covering, he is not planning to follow it. I wont be doing it personally. Asked about setting an example, he stressed nonmedical masks are voluntary. I think wearing a face mask as i greet president s, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens, i dont know. Somehow i dont see it for myself. Despite evidence that physical distancing slows the virus spread, the president said he will not pressure states to order residents to stay home. States that were talking about are not in jeopardy. No, i would leave it to the governors. As some states scramble for medical resources, the president touted federal action, but criticized governors for not buying more equipment before this crisis. Were not an ordering clerk. The president said he could not assure new yorkers there will be enough ventilators in the days ahead. They should have had more ventilators. They were totally underserviced. Were trying to do were doing our best for new york. Clearly frustrated, the president fumed at questions about how the federal stockpile of medical supplies is being distributed. Our, our it means the United States of america. After advisers, soninlaw, Jared Kushner stressed thursday the reserve belongs to the federal government, not the states. The federal government needs it, too. Not just the states. The white house at odds with minnesota maskmaking giant 3m in a dispute over exporting medical gear. The Company Released a lengthy statement defending its work to maximize production. They can push back if they want. Were not happy with 3m. Even if this time of deadly pandemic, the postimpeachment purge has resumed. The president is firing the Inspector General for the Intelligence Community. Michael atkinson who was playing a large role in turning over to congress that initial whistleblower complaint about the ukraine phone call that led to impeachment. The president notified the committees on capitol hill responsible for the Intelligence Community where he said he lost confidence in atkinson and the swift and damning. Speaker pelosi calling it brazen and saying that atkinson was following his job and his oath under the law. Kelly odonnell with that breaking news from overnight. Thank you. We want to bring in dr. Kvitova patel. She was a top official in the Obama White House and worked on the administrations response to the kwien fswine flu. Dr. Patel, thank you for joining us. We want to begin with the big news announced from the white house yesterday that the cdc is now recommending that americans who leave their homes wear nonmedical masks but President Trump says its voluntary and hes not going to do it. Whats the bottom line here, dr. Patel . Should people be Wearing Masks . The bottom line is that we should be, first of all, staying at home and practicing social distancing. Then on top of that, if you need to leave to conduct essential business only, you absolutely should wear a nonmedical grade mask. I think weve made that pretty clear. Were not trying to take away from valuable mic woHealth Care Workers such as myself and others. The president immediately then says hes not going to do it. We need to do across the country a uniform message, a mandate of sorts and that also has to go for social distancing as well. Dr. Patel, lets talk about the masks for a moment. A lot of americans will follow this new guidance. They will wear nonmedical masks. Whats the best advice in terms of what to use, how to go about doing it to best protect yourself and others . Peter, the reason its called an n95 mask is because it takes about 95 of the particles away. But plus, especially woven fabric. Not things that are stretching knits but woven fabrics. Two layers of fabrics even that can take away as many as 67 of the viral particles. Thats really the goal. You want it to cover your nose and suest. I know a lot of friends including my own family are making some at home. You can loop them around your ears and protect your nose and mouth and try to keep it simple. Do not use bleach, wash them in a regular washing machine and make sure theyre dry. Dont overthink it. If you can see sunlight through it, its probably too loose and you need something tighter. Dr. Patel, i want to followup on this idea of consistency. Some states have stayathome orders. President trump refusing to essentially issue guidance at the federal level, saying its really up to the governors. What risks might that create . The problem the symptoms, were not her met cli sealed in our neighborhoods, states and cities. We are absolutely going to continue to have hotspots if we cannot follow something uniformly. This isnt about violating states rights. Its about protecting Public Health. Were not going to be able to bend this curve and flatten it the way we need to unless we actually have an action as a United States of america. Honestly, i believe all citizens want to do that. Dr. Patel, thank you so much for helping us break down all of the medical headlines overnight. Appreciate it. For more of the thinking inside the white house during this pandemic, we want to turn to phil rocker. Hes the bureau contributor. Phil, good morning. Nice to see you. I hope youre staying safe and healthy. As weve witnessed, theres a lot of mixed messaging so far from this white house, the most recent coming from masks. Within the white house or within the president s circle, are the concerns that the president may be undermining the administrations own response to this crisis . There are concerns about that, peter. The concerns extend beyond the white house, to state and local leaders who tell us their constituents listen to the president on television every day and arent sure what theyre supposed to do because theyre hearing different messages. The last week has been one of confusion from the president beginning with that threat to have a quarantine on new york, new jersey and connecticut, which he later reversed and concluding last night with the mixed messaging about masks. I want to ask you about the critical issue of supplies, phil, because as you and i know, weve been tracking this a lot of governors saying they still dont have the smies they need. The president , his soninlaw, Jared Kushner have said, look, governors should have done a better job at stocking up in the first place. Take us inside the conversation, if you would. How does the administration and the president see their role right now in terms of helping the states to get those supplies . Kristen, the president calls himself backup. The federal government will come in second. But whats really going on is the political blame game between washington and state capitals around the country over who is at fault for there simply not being enough supplies in the United States to support a pandemic. The states could not have expected this might have happened at this magnitude. Theyre scrambling for supplies and the president is reluctant to take the blame for that. The president fired the Intelligence Community Inspector General. The firing on a friday night in the middle of a Global Pandemic. What is the impact of that announcement . Well, its a big deal, peter, because before coronavirus began, the president was on a purge. He was getting rid of people inside his administration who he viewed as disloyal and atkinson is chief among them. He brought the whistleblower complaint to congress that set off the impeachment inquiry that the president calls hoax. Phil, nice to see you. Thank you. You too. Thank you. We want to turn to an intense drama unfolding in south florida this weekend. Reporter for juan and laura, freedom meant reuniting with their 20yearold son who they worried about for weeks while waiting at sea. What was that hug like with your parents . My mothers was probably 45 seconds. It was emotional and comforting and warm and nice to be able to be embraced once again. Reporter obviously, many other families this morning hoping to experience that connection above the coral princess. As for the Parent Company for the ship, princess cruises, the last statement we got from them was yesterday afternoon talking about formalizing plans for arrival and disembarkation and theyre working with officials. Steph, it is of course the beginning of the month of april for a lot of people that means their bills are due. With so many folks out of work right now, what are some of the things that they can do to try to help make ends meet . Peter, people across this country are feeling financially stretched, financially stressed. But you cant fix these problems unless you address them. First things first, you have to open all of your bills, realize what you owe and make a phone call. Especially in the hardest hit states, like new york and california. There are relief programs, call your utility company, your credit card company, your bank. See if they can offer you some deferred payments, possibly pay minimums. Those options are out there. But youve got to pick up the phone. Now, many of us are home and it is actually a great time to start budgeting and looking at our situations. You can use really good websites. They put all of your finances in the same place. When you see it, you can address it. Then you can start thinking about where youre going to save. And the current chairman and ceo of wells north education, the largest digital curriculum company. Jonathan, good morning. Thank you for being here. Thanks for having me. Good morning. There were plenty of tears in the Alexander House this week. I havent started talking about my children yet. Lets get to the questions if we can. The first one from kim i matlock. Theyre from florida. Her mom asks, how much School Instruction time should we do, just the amounts to go through the assignments or try to stick to a Typical School day with the assignments, watching classes, reading, et cetera . Well, let me start by saying my answers today come from education experience with 8 million kids around the country and calvert were helping kids in cities throughout the country, new york, l. A. , miami and houston are just some. Let me go right to that question. This is really hard. Its hard for a lot of reasons. But lets start with the fact that we need to create a schedule. The same kind of schedule they would have in school. This is promotes learning of all kinds. They need to go to the bed at the same time and wake up at the same time they usually do. For kindergartners, grade 2, talking about 15 to 20 minutes, maybe three or four sessions a day that can build over time. As grades 3 and 5, we start to go longer. 20, 30 minutes. By high school, a full session as they would have in school, 45 to 60 minutes. Maybe four of five of them. You have to learn do this. Your kids are going to generally get better as time goes. Jonathan, so many parents saying how important those schedules are. Another question from pennsylvania. What is a responsible amount of athome learning time per day based on grade level . What would you tell us . The range all experts agree, somewhere between three and six hours. Some of that is going to be in learning ngther types of resources. At three for younger kids. Let me ask you another. These are from colleens friends kids on their daily walk. Their mom calling and asks, for parents working from home and homeschooling, whats the best way to block time to make sure everything is getting the attention it deserves. You talk about blocking time. Whats the best way to do that . You have to start with an agreement, sit down with your children and both stick to the schedule youve set. I mean, this is hard and its new. Were early in the game. Its like the first inning. Were dealing with kind of new schedules at home. I also encourage families to set aside space in the house for learning that is different than where the kids play. That can get difficult if you have more than one child in school like i do. I have a fourth and sixth grader. They have different learning styles and different parts of the house and they have to intrude on each other. Theyre finding out their parents dont know everything. Last but not least, joyce coe and their family in illinois ask what free educational tv or streenling servi streaming serv you recommend . There are a lot of out there. We at home use pbs, national geographic, scholastic and our own learn zillion. Searching on the web for age relevant content is a good way to add video and games to what the kids are learning in school. Parents all around the country are thanking you this morning, jonathan grayer. So are we. We appreciate you being here. Youre welcome. Everyone stay safe and learn well. You too.
