After his campaign canceled a planned second event outdoors, the president claimed protesters kept his supporters away. Crowds appeared sparse through the day. We had some very bad people outside. They were doing bad things. Reporter he played up his law and order persona against democrats and protests around the country. Attorney general william barr announced friday night that he would be stepping down so that President Trump could nominate his replacement, jay clayton, the chairman of the securities and exchange commission, who is not an experienced prosecutor. Clayton told the president that he was interested in the job and would leave thesec. Berman said he would stay on the job until his successor was confirmed by the senate. On saturday, barr said in a letter that he recommended that President Trump fire berman. Thats what happened. The president said later he had nothing to do with it. This move did set off alarm bells. Berman isnt just another u. S. Attorney. His office is investigating the Business Practices of trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and two of his exassociates. Republicans and democrats say its going to be hard for clayton to be confirmed. Barr said he is directing the justice departments Inspector General to monitor the new york office to make sure that all the cases there continue to be handled appropriately. That was supposed to be the launch of his 2020 reelection campaign. Can you sift through everything we saw last night and find the Campaign Message . What is President Trump running on . This has been a problem, willie, and some of his own advisers and those on the campaign have acknowledged that they havent essentially put together, okay, what does a second term look like, only in the last week have staffers in the white house started to put together a policy agenda for what a second term might look like. He has not really figured that out beyond, i belt remember the great economy . I will build it again. I think ultimately, its about the only sort of forward looking message he has. Everything else is grievance. Everything else in some way its almost a bit of, its 2015 and 2016 trump, just with updated lines and updated characters. But its the same sort of grievan grievancelike shots at various political opponents, the press, culture wars. In some ways its the same shtick. You have to ask yourself, is it start to wear thin if you look at the evidence of whether its turnout at the rally itself or his poll numbers. Yeah. I guess we will find out.
