So another complication, as nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez explains. Reporter the barbershop is no longer buzzing with business. It was ordered to close all indoor operation by the state. Reporter Restaurant Owner molly pow is also thinking outside the box. She just got approval from the city of fairfield to add a tent to her parking lot. The city passed an emergency ordinance that makes it possible. If i have extended seating out into the patio, we can accommodate customers that want to come, dine safely with us and, you know, kind of keep our business going. Reporter the city of martinez recently started closing off downtown streets some evenings so restaurants can have more outdoor space to serve customers. Serrano hopes hell get the green light to move his barber chairs onto the street as well. Where theres a will, theres a way. Ill make a generator, ill find extension cords, well make it happen. A summer surge. 41 states reporting a spike in coronavirus cases today. Among the questions now, will it keep spreading . Worth noting, were seeing a major spike in infections for people in their 20s and 30s, and states are starting to roll back reopening plans. California, texas are some of the states. Now florida did confirm another 9,000 new cases today. And pressure is mounting on floridas governor, desantis, to shut things down. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration, claiming today that the country is beginning to see progress in battling the pandemic. Now the Nursing Home Industry is warning that the spike in cases could have a devastating effect. They are pleading with governors to provide more masks and tests. Some pressing issues and some are promising, moderna completed the first phase of a human trial for a vaccine and it went well. Lets bring in a specialist from ucsf. Lets talk about moderna and the test results. How excited should we be . Well, moderna is part of operation warp speed, and is producing vaccine results faster than normal, but i still want to temper that by saying we probably wont have anything right for the public, if everything was super fast, until mid spring or so. This was published in the journal of medicine this week, so people do believe the data. In perpt perspective oxford is ahead. We talk about a lot of the spike is people in their 20s and 30s, can you tell us why . The surge is multifactorial. In the bay area, were feeling san quentin and the 1500 inmates, more than 200 infected, but we also have general surge, which is, you know, were focussed on the young people, but its also essential workers who couldnt have stayed home. Just got a note from my sons elementary school, really a survey for us parents on what we prefer, athome learning or distance learning. Can you give us guidelines for parents in trying to make the decision . I think the fact that you have a choice in a survey is revolutionary in itself. And frankly, anything is better than what happened in Orange County today when they declared, the board of education, that they would have school and there would be no social distancing and no masks. I thought that was really mindblowing, but i think every region has it to determine what their local epidemiology is. And there should be robust Safety Measures motte only for the students but teachers and staff. Why is that some facilities, Carbon Health is offering free testing by appointment, then we see other places at local high schools where testing lines are two to three hours long. Why is this such a difference . Youre introducing finances and money potentially into the equation. There are places where i can put up potentially, make an appointment and go pay for my test or drive through. Then there are places where if i want it for free i kind of have to line up and wait. There are two areas, one in waiting and lining up and then delays and waiting for the test. Weave heve been doing this g with you for almost four months now. Are you more frustrated than were you in midmarch . Or are things Getting Better in your mind . No, im more frustrated, i thought we would be done by now, back to my regular work. We have regular patients with other noncovid illnesses in the hospital, and were very busy, because were dealing with covid, and we encourage all the patients, appropriately, to come back to the hospitals, so that is giving us complication.
