Rescue rescuers racing into the badly damaged building rushing this woman to safety, and from the air its easy toe spot the devastation. Tonight as the country begins to assess the earthquakes toll, more than 100 dead, millions without electricity, the airports operation suspended and this cracked pavement one of the regions many scars. Liz bacha and her mother have relatives not far from the states of morelos and puebla. Weve been trying to contact friends and family in mexico city as well as tosca guerrero through facebook. So far weve not heard news yet. Well see. Reporter the quake was felt in mexico city which is only 75 miles from the epicenter which was in the state of morelos. In neighboring cities including the capital people rushed to help remove rubble in an attempt to free anyone trapped. This man who lives in mexico says everyone he knows is safe but is very frightened. People in the bay area unable to reach family members are being urged to call the consulate in San Francisco. Central mexico has endured 19 earthquakes of 6. 5 or stronger in the last century. There are two faults that run into each other causing large plates to break apart. Another issue is sedimentary basins. They are underground pockets created by tectonic activity that fill with sediment. Central mexico as well as the bay area have many of these areas. Mexico city is a large valley that has soft sediment in it, and so when the seismic waves from this earthquake come into that region, they tend to be amplified. The usgs says todays earthquake appears to be unrelated to a magnitude 8. 1 quake that hit mexicos Southern Coast on september 7th just a few days ago. Todays earthquake happened 32 years to the day as matt pointed out that an 8. 0 quake hit mexico. At least 5,000 lives were lost then. Virgin islands but also on puerto rico, not only the wind, its also the waves that are of concern. Close to the eye we have 30foot waves reported right now. Close to the puerto rican coast, we have waves right now of 15 feet. Live doppler 7 showing the circulation of rain around the system. We have the outer bands already making their way onshore into puerto rico, and this is just the beginning of that rain. Over the next 48 hours, some areas in puerto rico shaded in pink like you see right here could likely see anywhere from a foot and a half to two feet of rain, a huge amount of rain so flash flood sag huge concern. The wind field itself is rather big. What were focusing original the red circle right here. Those are winds over 74 Miles Per Hour, and they will be sustained for a period over puerto rico of some 18 hours or so. Weve got to do something about it, and so far all of the strategies of the Police Department arent working. The Police Department would not comment, but chief William Scott said recently he started a new plan to cut down on property crimes. You will see more officers off of these. We expect that to be a deterrent of crime, and we really intend to try to get in front of crime as much as we can do that. The supervisors also unanimously passed on First Reading a bill that would require rental agencies to hide barcodes on their cars to prevent breakins because rentals are the cars of choice for thieves. The San Jose Mercury news says he faces tens of millions in penalty and he bought the beach front property south of Half Moon Bay in 2009 and padlocked the gate to the beach.
