Theyre slowly coming for us all. Very slowly. So stay vigilant, america. Antifa fake teeth, fake hips, real danger. Ive fallen, and ill kill you all its a late show with Stephen Colbert. Tonight give peace some chants plus, stephen welcomes featuring jon batiste and stay homin. And now, live on tape from a safe distance, its Stephen Colbert stephen its going to be great. Its going to be three weeks of just you and me and no kids. laughter ready . Im ready stephen me, too, here we go. Give me a hit of whatever youre on right now. Welcome to a late show. Im your host, Stephen Colbert. All over america, millions of people are still marching to protest the murder of george floyd by Minneapolis Police and Police Brutality in black communities nationwide. Over the weekend, we saw massive turnouts in cities like los angeles, washington, d. C. , and philadelphia. That last one is particularly inspiring. Because usually when you see a crowd that big in philadelphia, theyre throwing batteries at the right fielder. Protests have also been a daily occurrence in new york city, and on saturday, one of the largest was led by a familiar covered up face. Welcome to certainly one of the more jubilant protests in new york city right now, a new orleansstyle second line led by jon batiste, best known as Stephen Colberts late show. Look at what were doing. Were using music to bring people together of all races, of all genders for black lives. We have to get protests, and we have to get to voting. 100 Million People did not vote in the last election. We are battling three candidates donald trump, joe biden, and apathy. And we have to fight apathy more than anything. And we have to fight for black lives. And right now, if we dont do that, nobody will. We are the ones. We are we are the chosen ones. We can change this. Stephen proud to know that man and as jon said, protesters represent a wide swath of america, across every race, creed, and cp. Thats right. Your eyes do not betray you. That is mitt romney marching with the protesters. Romney became the first republican senator to join protesters, marching through an wington with a group ofrin c. About why he was there to end violence and brutality, and to make sure people understand that black lives matter. Stephen man, why hasnt that guy ever run for president . Hed be way better than that binders full of women guy. And mitt, while alone among republican senators, is squarely in the american mainstream. Because it turns out, in a New Washington post poll, 74 of americans say they support the protests, including 53 of republicans. At this rate, i look forward to the new cable news morning show fox and my one black friend. And according to polls, two in three americans say the killing of floyd represents a broader problem within Law Enforcement. The third american couldnt be reached because she was busy calling the police on a black bird watcher. Now, another poll found that 53 of registered voters now say they support black lives matter, up from 42 a few weeks ago. So, just over half of americans voters believe black people have the right to live. Good news . Its a start. Now its time to put our money where our mouth is, just as soon as we take the slave owners off the money. In this moment of economic and social turmoil, america has a tremendous opportunity. But to do what . Well, yesterday, House Democrats unveiled their Police Reform bill that would crack down on use of Excessive Force and ban certain practices, like choke holds. I think banning things that sound like murder is probably pretty good policy. Now weve just got to outlaw stab and frisk. Some people want to go farther. One of the common signs held up at protests is defund the police, which is, coincidentally, the radiofriendly title of that song by n. W. A. Und th police c phenw, dundinghe policeige scary topeople. Like cbs. Theyd have to change their entire primetime lineup. Swat would have to become Community Health services. And ncis would stand for no cops instead, soup it would still have a lot of murder in it, but theres also a lot of bisques and chowders. Defunding the police doesnt necessarily mean no cops, as one Police Reform expert at Georgetown Law School points out. Defunding the police means shrinking the scope of Police Responsibilities and shifting most of what government does to keep us safe to entities that are better equipped to meet that need. It means investing more in mentalhealth care and housing, and expanding the use of Community Mediation and violenceinterruption programs. Because you see, right now, because those other services have been underfunded for years, all of that eventually falls to the police. And thats way too many things for them to be doing. Its like in the middle ages, it wasnt a good idea that your barber was also your dentist and your surgeon. And saying defund the barber doesnt mean no ones getting haircuts. Although, admittedly, right now, no ones getting haircuts. Now, this protest movement is really popular. But what has taken a hit in popularity are monuments to americas racist history, like confederate statues and donald trump. Trumps latest Approval Rating is just 38 , on par with jimmy carter at this point in his reelection year. And we all remember how carter bounced back with an astounding victory against ronald reagan. Thats why the 80s were known for moderation and peanuts. These polls are a tough reality, and like all reality, trump is denying it. Over the weekend, trump called around to new york friends in the hopes that they would validate trumps beliefs that the polls were wrong, but no one is telling him what he wants to hear. Oh, thats so pathetic. as trump please tell me that the polls are wrong and ill get reeected. Sir, this is the butterball hotline. Oh, in that case, i left my face under the heat lamp too long. Should i start basting it . Hello . Ohgaknots the president is looking where to aim his blame, and hes considering white house Senior Adviser and flushable wipe that wished to be a real boy, jared kushner. Kushner is currently overseeing trumps reelection campaign, and according to an insider, the president is thinking of replacing his soninlaw. We know, sir. Weve all seen the pictures. If trumps looking for someone to blame, he should check out his reflection in the riot shields, ecause that new poll also says that 61 disapprove of his handling of the protests. Thats not fair. Hes handling them just as well as he handles a bible. Trump is desperate to turn this thing around, so desperate, that the white house is considering a trump speech to the nation on race and unity. Yes, theyre considering it. Yes, considering a heroic contemplation of the possibility of leadership. It reminds me of dr. Kings immortal words im thinking about having a dream. What would that speech be like . Would he take a page from the democrats and wear an extralong kente cloth tie . Well, we may have gotten a little preview of trumps sensitive approach to police violence, because this morning, the president weighed in on Buffalo Police violently pushing an elderly protestor to the ground. The man involved, Martin Gugino, is in serious but stable condition. And we all hope for his speedy and complete recovery. But trump isnt buying the kind, fragile old man act, no, because he tweeted, the buffalo protester shoved by police could be an antifa provocateur. 75yearold Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan Police Communications in order to black out the equipment. I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. Could be a set up . Let me get this straight. This 75yearold man is an antifascist, which you somehow consider suspicious. He was somehow able to fall harder than he was pushed, fake a fractured skull, and spontaneously bleed from his ears, all the while operating a secret scanning device in order to black out all Police Communications equipment. Man, those jitterbug phones are as old man this big button is 911. And that one with the smiley face calls my grandson. And the one with the hammer and sickle on it is start populist revolution. Later, okay . Trump has to demonize the man because he has to convince the old, white voters he needs not to get reelected, not to sympathize with gugino, which is a tall order, because, turns out, Martin Gugino is a pretty sympathetic character. Hes a longtime peace activist and a member of a Human Rights Organization called the western new york peace center, and a group who focuses on Affordable Housing called push buffalo. Well, given what just happened to their member, they may want to consider changing their name to dont push buffalo. Maybe most damning to these conspiracy theories is that gugino is also a member of a group called the catholic worker movement. Formed in the 1930s, the movement describes itself as committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, and the works of mercy as a way of life. as trump hey, what do you expect . Jesus was a radical lefty. No shoes, no property, redistributed all the loaves and the fishes. And i heard he was crucified harder than he was nailed. Antifa. And at this point, even if trump gives a speech, its way too little, way too late. Because today in houston, friends and family gathered to remember george floyd, a man whose legacy will live on in the struggle for progress for equality. The service was a relatively small occasion, attended by those who were closest to floyd. Vice President Joe Biden declined to attend, not wanting to disrupt the service with his security detail, but he did appear in a pretaped address. And the Vice President had a compassionate message for George Floyds daughter gianna i know you have a lot of questions, honey. No child should have to ask questions that too many black children have had to ask for generations why . Why is daddy gone . Looking through your eyes we should also be asking ourselves why the answer is often too cruel and too painful . Why in this nation do too many black americans wake up knowing they could lose their life in the course of just living their life. Why does justice not roll like a river or righteousness like a mighty stream . Why. Stephen you see, mr. President . It is possible to bring people to tears at Church Without having to release the pepper spray. And the Vice President did the one thing that the president fears the most biden didnt mention the name donald trump once. Lets hope very soon we can all do the same. Weve got a show for you tonight. Ill be talking to the host of Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man, Emmanuel Acho. Plus, Fox News Sundays Chris Wallace is here. Stick around. And that protects our customers 24 7. Stephen welcome back, everybody. Before we go any further, lets check in with jon batiste. Jon at happening stephen that rally, that that protest, that march, that that expression this weekend. Tell me about it. It looked amazing. Jon man it was it was very special to see everybody come together and have people share in the fight, but also the celebration of black people, and in solidarity with people doing it all across the world. And, really, in celebration of the fact that were all human, and were all in this together. Stephen now, it was down in union square. How many people do you think were there . It looked like thousands and thousands. Well, i heard it was up to 5,000 people, maybe more. And we shut down sixth avenue with all the people, and marched from sixth avenue down from union square all the way to the empire state building. And as we got to the empire state building, there was just this incredible moment, where the rain started to come down, and a lot of the the rain was coming down, and it was hitting her drum. And we went into i want to dance with somebody. That was the song. And everybody was singing along for about three blocks. Stephen thousands of people . Thousands of people singing together. It was unbelievable. And and there was so much love. I dont even know how to articulate how much love i felt just being there. Stephen well, the footage was beautiful, and im proud to work with you. Jon oh, man, likewise. Its its really important what youre doing, and your voice is so important. And im im thrilled to work with you as well. Stephen keep it up, man. Joining me tonight is a sports analyst and former n. F. L. Athlete who now hosts a show called Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man. Please welcome Emmanuel Acho emanuel, thanks for being here. Of course, how are you my friend. Stephen im doing well. Lets have the most comfortable uncomfortable conversation right now. The first unstawment of Uncomfortable Conversations with a black man came out last week. Over 20 million views so far. Yeah. Stephen whats the aim of your show . And why is discomfort an important part of it . I think that my goal is to breathe conversation between black people and white people. Were facing one of our biggest racial divides, and we have to educate ourselves, and white people might my beckon to my White Brothers and sisters was to expose themselves. My goal was to break that awkward barrier between black and white people, talk about those uncomfortable things. Because i believe some of our greatest accomplishments, some of our greatest things in live are birthed through discomfort. Look at newborn babies. Thats through nine months of intensive labor, and thats most beautiful gift on the face of the earth. I was like if we have an issue between black and white people right now, the best way to overcome it is through uuncomfortable conversation. Stephen i watched your first video and i really enjoyed it in a mildly uncomfortableway. You answered questions you often hear from your white friends. The second episode comes out tonight featuring a conversation with matthew mcconaughey. What questions are you answering this time . Yeah, i wanted to answer the biggest one do i call black people black or African American. The most simple and safe answer is calling black people black because its accurate. There are jamaicans in america and cubans in america, theyre not africans. Stephen in the new episode you also talk about the difference between not racist and antiracist. Yes. Stephen you can differentiate that for me . Yes. Its not enough in 2020 to be not racist, not racist meaning i am passive when it comes to racism. I am not going to use the n word, but, like, if my friend using it, nah, its not a big deal. We have to now be antiracist. Obviously, black people we know we have always been, but also white people as well because my white friends they infiltrate spaces i can never infiltrate as a black man so they have to call out racism. Thats what i mean by being antiracist, stephen. Its not just because okay just because i dont say the n word or im not scared of black people, if you see it you have to speak on it and call it out. Stephen also, i would say, look i would never say im not going to say people who voted for the president of the United States we have right now are racist, but given the racist things he has done they are willing to overlook it. Yes. Stephen and that itself say tassist form of of that gives the, basically, a space for racism to flourish. Exactly. I believe it was the ben frank len quote that says something along the lines im paraphrasing we wont see justice until those who are unaffected are as outraged in those who are affected. Thats what i said in my first video. Its not enough for Emmanuel Acho to be outraged when someone says something or does something racist. I need my dear white friends to be just as outraged about it. Stephen my family and i were in a black lives matter march on sunday, and the person in front of me for a fair amount of the march had a sign up that said, its time for white people to have a conversation about racism with white people. Yeah, yeah. Stephen give me give me an uncomfortable start to that conversation, if you dont mind. The conversation itself is uncomfortable. Lets be honest. We have parents who talk about and educate their kids on the birds and the bees, sex. They educate them on finances. You educate them on religion. But, stephen, when it comes to race, nobody wants to talk about it. And i think we just have to some racist ideologies. Maybeyor maybe your uncle or your cousin has had some racist ideologies and its time it speak on those things. But ill say this. Im encouraged. Because i got a message from a girl in alabama and she said, i didnt realize i was racist, emanuel, until i saw your video. I got a message from a young boy from arkansas and said, my dad was in the k. K. K. After i saw your video i showed it to him. He doesnt agree with you but i know i have been in the wrong. The conversations might not go the way you think but they have to exist. Stephen does the scale of the National Conversation right now give you some hope . Oh, absolute. If no one else has hope right now, i have enough hope for everyone because after seeing my video garner now 22plus million views, its not about that. Its about the messages i received. I went through every single email. It was all hopeful. The most memorable one was a sweept 73yearold white woman named linda. She said, i grew up in the 40s. She said, i couldnt go to school with negroes. She said, i became a flight attendant, dont give up on me emanuel. After seeing your video i realize i need to change. Love you, my son and my brother. And i was like, man, theres some sweet 73yearold country white woman who grew up in segregated schooling, and she said, dont give up on me yet. Im not giving up. Im not. Stephen emanuel we have to take a quick break. Stick around everybody well be right back with more of a fairly comfortable uncomfortable conversation with a black man. Stick around. Emmanuel, on friday, n. F. L. Commissioner Roger Goodell made a video supporting plaque lives matter and encouraging players to peacefully protest. Did that thats a huge shift after years of bashing, you know, Colin Kaepernick ath players peacefully kneeling. What did you make of that . Talk is cheap. Talk is cheap, stephen. I need to see action. It contradicts his previous messages for years. In 2018, the n. F. L. Says players are not allowed to kneel for the National Anthem. If youre going to peacefully protest, you better stay your butt inside. And now in 2020, Roger Goodell comes out and says, we were wrong. We made a mistake. Well, how wrong were you, goodell . Thats what i want to know. How wrong were you . Were you wrong enough to allow players to attack a knee during the National Anthem or were you only wrong enough to compose a sweet twooet . I admire the fact he composed the tweet but talk is cheap. I want tee goodeo the right thing. Im so tired of putting out a political statement. I want to see real action. Stephen what about an apology, a real apology, as well . Also to Colin Kaepernick and to all the other players who not only were crfsed for doing it but conflated with not supporting the troops, questioning their patriotism. Dont all of those people deserve an apology . Whos going to give the apology. Thats the question. Its not just goodell. If kat were to get an apology it needs to be all 32 n. F. L. Owners. It would also then need to be goodell. Because the owners are the ones who dictate, so to speak, along with the general managers and the coaches who is on that roster. But to apologize is to admit you were wrong. To apologize to kaepernick is to admit you colluded. And i dont think the owners are capable nor willing to do that because to apologize to kap is to now bring him on your roster. But are you willing to take that big a leap of faith . Or are you only willing to tweet something out so you can get a couple of retweettweets and chef this box, so to speak. Stephen what concrete action would you like to see from the n. F. L. Going forward . What would bring about some real change . I want to see mandated integration on the coaching level. And, honestly, probably on the management level. Its not enough, stephen, to have a rooney rule where you simply have to interview a coach, an African American head coach, when theres a head coaching vacancy. I want to see a mandated number of African American coaches in the n. F. L. And ill say it because of this not just because you want to do black people a favor. But if you want to increase the level of the game, then you change the rule. The n. F. L. Changes rules every off season from concussion protocols to blocking rules to increase the level of the game. Well, if you want to go back and you look at any sport, whether muhammad ally, serena williams, whether tiger woods, whether misty copeland, when you allow r interigration at the highest level of the quality of the sport increases. In 2003, the n. F. L. Implemented the rooney rule. In 2007, four years later, for the first time in n. F. L. History two black coaches met in the super bowl. Thats not a coincidence. I want to see the n. F. L. Mandate integration in coaching. Stephen for those of us who dont follow all the sports all the time why do you think its important that this progress be made on the field for the country in general . Because the n. F. L. Literally owns one day of the week. Sunday is dedicated to n. F. L. Football. Millions of followers. What we see from some of our wealthiest men that are n. F. L. Owners, what we see from one of our most beloved games will infiltrate the minds of the culture. Remember, stephen, the n. F. L. Said that kneeling was disrespecting the flag. And so the entire world began to believe that kneeling was disrespecting the flag. So if the n. F. L. Were to say it is imperative to have African Americans, people of color in a coaching staff, imagine the Ripple Effect it will have on the world. The n. F. L. Needs to lead the charge because it already owns one day of the week. Stephen emmanuel, thanks so much for being here. Thank you, my friend. I promise you. Im sure. And theyll boo me, as they usually do. Stephen well, its tradition. Its tradition, chris. Thank you so much. Thank you. Now, youve been a reporter for over 55 years. sighs have you ever seen anything like the moment were going through right now . Do you have any points of reference or frame for whats happening right now . I thought about it a lot, anything like what were seeing in 2020. The only year that comes to mind is 1968. And i was a senior in college. But think back then or for most people it will probably be google back then we had the vietnam war raging. Lyndon johnson, the president , suddenly resigned well, he didnt resign, he said he wasnt going to run for reelection. We had the terrible assassination of Martin Luther king. Cities on fire. Much more so than the protests were seeing this year. Then the assassination of bobby kennedy, and then the protests and the Police Beating of protesters in the streets of chicago during the democratic convention. And a little bit although i think that was worse than this year the same feeling of is the country just going to come apart . Theres a little bit of that same feeling. The one thing were having this year that we didnt have then of course is the pandemic and the economic collapse that came with that. So thats an added feature for 2020. Stephen well, another sort of added feature fo 2020 is you have all these retired military coming out and expressing well, their criticism, their distress, the dismay at the behavior of our present president. Powell, mullen who you had on, admiral mullen, you had him on Fox News Sunday this week, i understand. And of course general mattis. Does this surprise you . Have you seen this level of exmilitary coming out so forcefully speaking out against the president . Well, and more important than the president , the command commander in chief. Im not particularly surprised by colin powell. I mean, hes been for every democrat since barack obama in 2008. But mullen and especially mattis im surprised at. Mattis wrote a memoir, either earlier this year, late last year, and a lot of people were disappointed. Because, remember, he resigned because of a policy disagreement over pulling troops out of syria. And it was clear he was not very happy with the president. And when he wrote his memoir, a lot of people including myself were disappointed that he didnt say what he had to say about donald trump. And he said, i think i owe him the duty of silence, which i understood as kind of a military honor that i served him as the secretary of defense, and im not going to undercut him in the middle of his presidency, especially the term they served with him, during. And that broke this week. And it broke because he was just fed up with what he felt was the president s divisive nature. He said that, ive been in service to the country for decades. I guess probably half a century for him, too. And he said, all president s have tried to unite us, and this one he says, tries to divide us. That was pretty shocking and i think pretty damaging to the president. Stephen speak of the president and his ability or his inability to unite us, there was some talk and this is sort of this is reporting sort of from Anonymous Sources in the white house, that the president and his team had considered giving a speech last week of unity and addressing the racial divide and the use of force by police against black communities in the United States but decided against it because, a, it stylistically doesnt meet the president , and also they dont have concrete proposals to go with it. Now theres talk of that again. Is it too late, in your opinion. , for him to do that . Hes already sort of put his marker down, that these people are violent. These people are not real protesters. These people are terrorists. Even mr. Gugino from buffalo, hes an antifa. He was secretlnblk cops radios. Has he thrown away all of his Political Capital on doubling down that these protesters and this opposition to the way that his administration has responded to this arent legitimate enough to address . Id push back a little, because i dont think he has said all the protesters are violent. In fact, he said when he made his statement in the rose garden a week ago monday, he said that im the president of law and order, and a friend of peaceful protests. But i certainly take your general point, which is stephen but while he said that, in the middle of saying that, you could hear the flash grenades going off in the background. I know. Stephen against peaceful protesters. So he has no ground to stand on there. Well, i know thats your view. Im not going stephen its my view. That is thaad actually happened if somebody says im not a violent person i dont want to be in the position of defending her, but im citing the record that the president said there are protesters, which he supports that, and then there are violent people, and there certainly have been that as well. But to get to the bigger point, i certainly think that there were plenty of opportunities over the last two weeks where the president , who has come down, you know, very hard on law and order, and even earlier this week, met with Law Enforcement officials, you know, he hasnt had civil rights leaders in, he hasnt had the family of george floyd in. He would have had a lot of opportunities to make two points, i think both of which are valid, which is that there are some serious concerns here about about policing in African American, minority communities, and, you know, some of the misconduct that happens there, some of the unequal treatment. You know, you just have to look at minneapolis, where police are seven times more likely to use force against young black men than they are against young white men. I mean, there are some stats that just indicate it. And he could have done, that while at the same time espousing law and order. And he seems and i think this is his instinct that he wanted to accentuate one and not really say very much a little but not very much about the other. Stephen do you think its just his instincts, or do you think hes getting bad advice . I know he has an increasingly smaller sort of circle of advisers because anybody who disagrees with him gets the door. I i think that as time has gone on and i agree with you that people that push back too much against the president dont have long long to live in the trump white house. I think that its more and more trump unplugged, trumps vision of the world, and trumps trumps instincts. So when hes reacted over the last two weeks as he has, whether you like it or not, i think its its donald trump. Stephen now, youve made the president mad a few times. Youve with your i believe the word is with your fact checking. You said he tweeted this about you recently. Are we really are we going to do mean tweets. I thought another latenight show did mean tweets . He doesnt have a copyright, unfortunately. Not intellectual property . Stephen no, no with the just watched mike wallace wannabe Chris Wallace on fox news, i believe hes worse than sleepy eyed chuck todd of meet the press. What the hell is happening at fox news . Its a whole new ball game over there. Does it make you feel good when this happens because fay journalist makes the comfortable uncomfortable, and the powerful a little bit on edge, havent you done your job . Yeah, i will say yes, generally speaking i would agree with that, and particularly if you make both sides mad. Stephen oh, you do, you do. Listen, i tick you off, so i just seem to be stephen im not a politician. I understand. Its on a human level that you hate me. Stephen i dont hate you, i love having you on. Stephen hey, everybody, were back with the author of countdown 45, Fox News Sundays Chris Wallace. Chris, you have a new book, which i understand is your first book. It is, and im very excited about it. Stephen why after 55 years did you write your first book . Okay, well you know what i think ill fut here. I think this is the better way. The reason i wrote countdown 45, i brought props, too, is because of the fact that i always wanted to write a history thriller. You know, one of the things that strikes me about his always and i love history but we always sort of its always written from the Vantage Point of we know what happened. And i thought this book, countdown 45, the 116 days that changed the world, its about truman becomes president suddenly on april 12, 45, and 116 days later, the u. S. Drops the bomb on hiroshima. And each step along the way, the president has to make decisions. The scientists dont know if the bomb will work. The flight crew thats going to deliver the bomb doesnt know if theyll get knocked out of the sky after the aftershocks. A little 10yearold girl is living in hiroshima at ground zero. And what i was trying to communicate is the uncertainty, the tension that they felt in that moment. And the best review i got so far, in the washington post, they said, i know what happened in 1945, but this is a thriller. And thats what im trying to do. Stephen so in countdown dency . Is tt the very beginning . Thats april 12, 1945. He stephen how did he find out . Well, im glad you asked that question, stephen. He is samaraburn, from texas msam is the speaker of the hiews and he has a room called the board of education. And he has cronies, political cronies come over for gossip or strategy or just to have a drink. And truman, even though he was Vice President , is a is a regular there. And he comes over, and that afternoon of april 12, and as he arrives, rayburn says, the white house is looking for you. He calls the white house and he says, this is the v. P. And f. D. R. ,s secretary said get over here as quickly and quietly as possible. He doesnt say that roosevelt is dead. And truman puts the phone, hangs it up and says, jesus christ and general jackson which i know you say often when youre upset with something. Stephen of course, of course, i almost said it several times during this interview. But its fine. Every time you do it, it will be plugging my book. And he gets over to the white house, thinks that hes going to be meeting roosevelt, and mrs. Roosevelt says, harry, the president is dead. And he says, mrs. Roosevelt, is anything said, harry, is there anything we can do for you because youre the one in trouble now. Stephen wow. All right, that sounds like a great read. Countdown 45. Its available today. The man is Chris Wallace. Thanks so much, chris. Well be right back. Late show. Tune in tomorrow when my guests will be stacey abrams, and soccer superstar megan rapinoe.
