The negotiations over enhaed Unemployment Benefits comes on the heels of the july jobs report. The Labor Department says 1. 8 million new jobs were created last month. That knocked down the nations Unemployment Rate to 10. 2 . The pace of hiring appears to be slowing as more states hit the brakes on their plans to reopen. For more were joined by cbs news Senior Business analyst jill schlesinger. Good morning to you. Lets get right into this. That weve seena surge insouth and west states when it comes to this coronavirus. We also see that some states are starting to slowly recover. What does the picture look like for states overall when were talking about recovery . Well, i think that the economy really did bottom out at the end of march, beginning of april, overall. We saw that with the jobs situation. We lost 22 million jobs in march and april. Then the next two months, when we look at m june,regained7. 5 mh is a huge number. Now we get the most recent data for july, 1. 8 million jobs. What does that tell us . It tells us that the pace of growth is slowing down some. But its still growth. That is good news. I think economists are quite concerned about what happens going forward, especially as things have slowed down and we see a surge of virus in the south, in the west, and now even in the midwest. I think that there are hopes that things get better, but the reality on the ground is things are really tough. We have 12. 9 million fewer jobs than we had just in february. Jill, the Great Recession lasted for 18 months, right. December, 2007, to june of 2009. A dramatically different time. Werent dealing with a pandemic then. Any idea how long this recession takes . When you look at the job growth and the economic path, it looks like the u. S. Economy will not get back to to where we were prior to the pandemic until, ready for this, the end of 2021. So we are talking like a long time. Now, the idea here, though, is that if we can control the path of the virus, the economy may d said, hey, loo at e path of the virus, that will tell you where the economys going next. Jill, a lot of workers right now are caught in this vicious cycle of being laid off and then rehired and laid off and rehired. The end of the paycheck protection program, it seems like that means a final layoff is coming for some of them. It may be good for businesses, but its not good for workers. How do you fix that . Well, there has to be some fix if you want to do if you want to help the Small Business universe. We have a survey out from Cornell University which found some staggering numbers, found that 31 of these surveyed were rehired by the payroll protection program, then were laid off again. Then wed say another 26 say they, too, they will be laid off in the future. It is grim for Small Business. They probably need help more than any other type of business, as well as their employees who need that 600 a week. Okay. Jill schlesinger as always, thank you very much. There is little letup in the nations battle against the coronavirus. More than 58,000 new cases in the u. S. Were reported friday pushing the total number of infections close to five million. The nationwide death toll is more than 161,000. The concerns of reopening the university of North Carolina have caught the attention of police in chapel hill. Michael george is in new york city this morning where classrooms will be open this fall. Good morning. Reporter jeff, good morning. This fall children will be able to walk through the doors of marine park junior high once again. And new yorks governor says the only rope theyre able to make that happen is because the states infection rate has fallen to 1 . But in parts of the country where the virus is raging out of control, parents and teachers have a difficult decision to make. At a time when the nations children are heading back to some sort of school, a new report shows more than 338,000 children tested positive as of the end of july. 97,000 of those cases reported in the last two weeks of the month. A 40 jump. More than 25 children died in july alone. Dr. Tina hartert hopes increased testing it of children will help determine what roley in transmission. The kits are shipped to the families. Theyre taught how to collect these samples. And then the samples are sent back by the families to a central repository. Reporter the pressure to get kids into classrooms has left superintendents in more than 13,000 Different School districts across the country trying to figure out how to keep children safe amidst a myriad of Public Health mandates and advisories. And also handle learning differences. In niles, michigan, superintendent Dan Applegate is depending on plexiglass to use for students with learning difficulties. Im sitting here, and i could articulate, the student on the other side would be wearing a mask. I could put my mask on. The student could drop their mask and articulate, as well. Reporter in new york city, the nations Largest School district, it was announced schools will open their doors. The chancellor and his team have worked incessantly to get this right. Theyve looked at examples from all over the world of what will keep the School Community safe. And theyve made a series of choices of how to do things from a health and safety lens first while also making sure we can educate our kids. Youre going to see a very clean and disinfected bus. Reporter lawrence township, indiana, is cleaning its buses with hospitalgrade disinfect ant spray. Fogging machines. Reporter here many students arent expected to get on the bus. 35 of them are predicted to stay home to learn remotely. While many School Districts have announced they wont open at all. So what does a reopened School Look Like . Well, here in new york, the specifics havent even been worked out yet. We do know that it means students and teachers Wearing Masks, increased covid screenings, and schools could shut down again if the infection rate rises. Thank you so much. For more were were joined by medical contributor dr. David agus. Doctor, so new york is opening. L. A. And chicago all remote learning. Other districts still making decisions. Is it still just wait and see for a lot of these states and cities . Hopefully its data driven. Looking at the rate of cases and the trajectory of those cases in an individual region to make the decision. You know, theres no right decision here. Kids need to learn, they need to socialize. At the same time, we need to obviously stop this virus. So the notion of opening a school with no protection, that is no masks and no social distancing, makes no sense. Opening a school with behavior changes is possible if theres not ramping cases. Thats what were seeing around the country. New york is doing that now. If the number goes above 5 in any region, that region will close their schools. What makes this difficult to track is that you have a number of people spreading the virus and dont even have symptoms of it. Can you talk about the new research thats come out regarding people that are asymptomatic . Yeah. Weve always talked about that there could be asymptomatic spread. The first study to actually demonstrate how this happens came out this week. It was data from south korea. What they showed is that individuals who are symptomatic or asymptomatic had the same amount of virus in the nose, the throat, and the lungs. The same amount of virus. And so we can assume theres the same amount of spread between asymptomatic or asymptomatic person. So obviously thats why this virus has taken off in the country. People not knowingly leave the house and can spread this virus. But the same amount of virus thats symptomatic and asymptomatic was surprising, but those are the data. On the vaccine front right now, realize this wont necessarily solve everything as weve been warned, but different drugs or different vaccines or in different phases of development right now, what are we learning about that . So there are really three big vaccine programs in phasethree studies that we are producing here in america. The Astrazenica Oxford vaccine is in phase three, started actually several months ago. South africa, brazil, and the United Kingdom looking very encouraging. We should know that data hopefully sometime in september. We have the moderna study which started two weeks ago. And we have the pfizer study which also started recently. Those three studies are really our hope in the short run that we get data, that the data see that this can reduce dramatically symptoms in the virus, and that we can get this vaccine out to people. People are worried about will the vaccine be politicized. The answer is no. I mean, its data driven. We know the criteria the evacuatvaccine has to reach. If it reaches those criteria, we will have a vaccine in the fall. If it doesnt, we wont. The key, too, is a vaccine that works. Thank you so much. And they are able to charge more for sessions, and its so weird. Why, but as a woman its hard to inpose my price. Reporter in 2018 women earned about 82 cents for every dollar earned by men. For black women, 62 cents. And for latino women, just 54ent cents. This is a driver of the wealth gap which can mean a woman at retirement age accumulates about 1 million less than her male counterpart. I think it has to do with a lot of antiquated gender norms and roles and expectations that we have around whos the primary breadwinner in families. Reporter nicole mason is the president and ceo of the institute for womens policy research. Covid19 has hit women particularly hard. Why . The sectors that were hardest hit by the pandemic were sectors where women were predominantly in focus. So the service sector, education, health services, those were hardist hit. When you couple that with the pay gap and lack of savings, economic shock like the pandemic really hurts and cripples working women, especially lower wage women. Reporter she says shutdowns across the country put working moms at a disadvantage. Theres no school, theres no day care. And women are expected to do it all. Theyre expected to work 40 hours a week and still be the primary caregiver. And its just an impossible situation for most women, especially women who dont have the option of workingte like to two fr ting ide todo leavr job a a paraeducator to home school her children this fall. Thats definitely going to leave a gap in my resume. I dont know how its going to be going back, if theyre going to have me back. Obviously the lack of income and financial goals that has to take a setback for a while. Reporter the pay gap persists because genderbased pay description, although illegal, is widespread. Women also work in lower paying jobs and might not have access to paid family leave or affordable childcare. So the pay gap wont close. If we do nothing, it wont close for another 40 years. For black and latino women it wont close for more than 100 years, so a century. Essentially my daughter or my daughters daughter wont see pay equity in their lifetime. This conversation that were having around the pay gap and wealth building and also building an economy, more equitable economy that works for everyone, i think the pandemic and covid has really us an opportunity to think about women workers. Reporter including simone hopefully things get better. My goal is to create videos on line, on my website, where people subscribe and have access to my workouts. Reporter like so many others, shes trying to salvage her business, but plans to move out of new york city because she can no longer afford it. I want to work. Like i just want work even when i say i need assistance, i dont need somebody to give me money. I just need work, you know. Interesting to see how many of these issues the pandemic has put an extra spotlight on, including the wage gap. Yeah. Such an important story. U. S. Intelligence officials are sounding the alarm that russia, china, and even iran are trying to influence the results of novembers president ial election. President trump speaking to reporters last night downplayed the notion that moscow was trying to lean the ballots in his favor. It could be. Could be very much. I think that the last person russia wants to see in office is donald trump because nobodys been tougher on russia than i have ever. Mr. Trump, however, seemed to agree with the intelligence indicating that china did not want him to get reelected. He did not specify what if anything the u. S. Is doing to counter the suspected interference. The intelligence agencies say its unlikely that anyone could manipulate Voting Results in any sweeping way. President trump says hes ready to end the stalemate with democrats over a Coronavirus Relief package by signing executive orders to stimulate the economy. An estimated 30 million americans are trying to make ends meet without the 600 weekly supplement in Unemployment Benefits that expired last week. No new talks are scheduled. The president says hes looking to make a deal with congress before taking executive action. Theres a growing push by airline employees, their unions, and even Airline Executives to include additional federal aid in the next Coronavirus Relief package. Without it, they say tens of thousands of workers could lose their jobs just a month before the president ial election. Many have been in swing states. It is fashionable and perhaps factual to say theres never been a year like 2020. A pandemic, mast protests over racial equality, a deeply divided electorate, an upcoming election and more. It is the latest challenge for america. The largest democracy in the world and one of its oldest. This morning, we highlight the authors of a new book, four threats, that looks at the stakes involved both n a 0plus theyetars. Pas [ chants ] american politics has had troubling trends that have been emerging for years, and i think for both of us weve beenry ourt eporheve bn for decades. For them the current moment seems overwhelming. I would run into colleagues of mine who study other countries in the world and study the decline of democracy in various places, and they seem to have more of an understanding of what was going on than i did. And they would say things like, well, you know, democracies, they come and go. They tonigdont last forever. As a student of american politics i was horrified that we were thinking of the United States that way. Reporter mettler and leash plans book looks at what they believe are the four threats to american democracy expansive president ial power, Political Polarization, Rising Economic inequalities, and racism or nativism. In which direction are they trending now . Theyve all been on the rise. Reporter the book examines how these issues spiked alarmingly at different points in our history. The first crisis right after americas founding. The 1790s when Political Polarization had a dangerous level. Fueled by the warring factions of Alexander Hamilton and thomas jefferson. The clash was crystalized in the whiskey rebellion. A tax dispute that led to widespread protests in western pennsylvania. George washington sent in federal soldiers to quell the violence and was widely praised for it, but not by all. It caught the attention of a lot of people that here you had this federal government that was using its power in a way that most americans didnt think would happen. They thought that was counter to the spirit of the american revolution. What starts out as a policy disagreement really almost becomes an identity conflict between people who are affiliated with the federalists and washington and hamilton and other people who are affiliated with the democratic republicans and jefferson and madison. If you and i disagree about what the government should do about something, thats normal, thats natural, thats fine. But when tha of dispute becomes a matter of thats happening now. You feel like you cant have a rational debate about it because youre so attached to one part. And both sides saw each other as treasonous. Reporter during the 1850s, mettler and lieberman say we reached another dangerous level when the country continued fighting over its original sin slavery. That led to the next great threat post reconstruction. As the promise of equality was pushed aside in favor of segregation. Americas first moment of executive overreach, mettler and lieberman argue, didnt happen until the 1930s under Franklin Roosevelt when many of his aggressive measures to pull the United States out of the Great Depression came under legal challenges. Roosevelt attempted unsuccessfully to expand the Supreme Court to increase his support. The trend of increasing president ial power continues today. Has the expanded power of the american presidency been a good or bad thing . Its allowed for the country to meet unanticipated challenges and emergencies in ways that were difficult to conceive in the, say, in the 19th century. But at the cost of giving a single individual a lot of authority that he can use in ways that we might in the end not find so satisfying. Reporter did the founders intend for the presidency to be that powerful . In general no. Reporter executive overreach hit a peak during the Nixon Administration when the president sanctioned criminal activity to target his political rivals. From the 1980s on, lieberman and mettler believe all four threats have been growing, especially Political Polarization which they say hasnt been this bad in 130 years. It felt like a generation ago you could have a political conversation potentially at the dinner table. It was going to be fraught and maybe to be avoided. Today, if it comes up, noholdsbarred. Its bad immediately. Thats right. Reporter and everyones intransigent about it. Why . Weve sorted ourselves out in all sorts of ways. Reporter they say they wrote this book to give americans a sense of how messy and fragile democracy can be. Do you think people should leave in book discouraged or hopeful . You know, im fundamentally an optimist. So theres an opportunity here for americans to do something that we havent done before. And that is to find a way out of this crisis where we make the United States more equal and more inclusive rather than having a settlement that excludes some people, particularly based on race. I think people sometimes think that since this is the oldest democracy and the most successful democracy that it will always be that way. I think history teaches us that democracies dont last forever. And that maintaining a democracy and strengthening a democracy is hard work. One of the things that history demonstrates is that there are usually people who are willing to do the work. They dont always prevail in the way that wed like them to. Americans have not given up the ghost. Love that line. Americans havent given up the ghost. Great piece. And i think that oh. You were taken aback by it. No, really. I think clearly people are hungry right now in this moment for history and trying to understand where all of this comes from. And i i want to ask you, are you hopeful after reading that . To hear some of what they said, it was like wow. Yeah, theres hard stuff. They deal with very difficult subjects. Yes. I think i would agree with suzanne to the extent thatou know. And i think one of the interesting things they do in this book is they make it more accessible. Its not 1,000 pages, just over 200 pages. You can spend a little time with it and hopefully get some perspective on both the past and right now. All right. Jeff glor. Thank you. Thats me. The games have been postponed until next summer, and the delay, the first ever for the modern olympics, has the athletes finding creative ways to push their limits and stay in top form. Nancy chen has their story. Reporter for years, precisely choreographed routines, perfected footwork, and thousands of miles logged, are performed by athlete chasing the olympic dream. A shot at greatness as the world watches. When life can change in a moment. A moment that will now have to wait because of coronavirus. Its like getting the rug swept out from underneath you. Reporter gymnast Laurie Hernandez captured the worlds attention and gold and silver medals at the 2016 rio olympics. Like other olympic hopeful the, she now has to wait to qualify for the migae having to come down again. Reporter rescheduling means another year of testing limits to their extremes. Financially, mentally, and physically. What do you like about trail running . You know, its quiet. Reporter runner kyle merber set a world record as part of the relay team in 2015. After trying twice before, the 29yearold had been hoping to make his First Olympic Team and his final push. Definitely felt deflated at first. Everything that i do every single day is kind of positioned in such a way that i could run my best when it counts the most. And then all of a sudden, that is stripped from you. Reporter like most of us, olympic hopefuls had to adjust to a new normal, even figuring out how and where to train became a challenge. My living room doesnt really have the best beam setup my coffee table can be the beam, the vault. Reporter instead world champions lifted weights at a local park or in a garage next to holiday decorations. Teams practice by zoom. The kids play room became the gym with curiousrainin partners. Athletes in some sports fared better than others, requiring more contact. It was probably 2. 5 months with very, very limited training. Reporter fencer daryl homer won a silver medal in rio in the mens sabre match and is trying to make his third olympic team. Fencing is a sport that requires equipment, coaches, a fencing club to train in. Training partners. And youre normally in a club of 30 to 40 people, and you have the more training partners the better. Reporter in the pandemics earl earl days, homer honed his skiles from his apartment skills from his apartment. You mentioned doing footwork on your roof. Did you do that before all of this . Never. I never would have dreamed of doing that before, no. Reporter the added year will mean less money for athletes no longer winning prize money from competitions or bonuses from sponsors. Thats been really tough for a lot of different people out there just trying to make ends meet. And i know a lot of their worries were like, okay, can i even hang in there for next year . Am i going to be able to financially hang on until the olympics . Reporter dr. Leah lagos is a clinical and sport psychologist who treats olympic athletes. Can these athletes deal with so much change . Yes. Reporter she calls burnout in the next year a major concern. This is a devastating period for many of them. While theyre resilient by nature and nurture, many are going through a struggle. Reporter theres a chance the Tokyo Olympics wont happen at all. If they arent held in 2 happen i and ii. If the olympics dont happen, how long does it take an athlete to readjust and find their new purpose in life . In terms of recovery, its very individual. It can take years sometimes. And so and in particular instances to heal. And others, it can be a few weeks or not at all. A lot of these athletes would be gutted. Reporter merber has already reexamined his goals. Rediscovering his love of the sport in the meantime. In his running career, merber has completed almost exclusively in the1,500meterace andra fong d hisage. We no longer say that you are training for the olympics. Yet you are still trying to make the 2021 games. What do you mean by that . Im interested in pursuing a professional career beyond just professional running. Im interested in, you know, starting a family with my wife and just maybe taking some vacation thats we wouldnt have otherwise done. And just maybe not sacrificing every single day in the way that i have. Maybe eating a little bit more ice cream. Reporter for homer, the pause in olympic training gave him more time to devote to increasing diversity in fencing. He also participated in black lives matter protests this summer. As athletes, fencing is a global sport. Were flying around every three weeks. Its hard to kind of ground yourself in whats happening around people, around communities or in your community. Reporter as for hernandez, she says the extra year of training may ultimately help her. The gymnast had taken two years off after rio. I knew the comeback was late. This year gives me time to get upgrades and get more consistent. I want to experience the olympics again, but at 20 because at 16 ignorance is bliss. Reporter the motto translates to faster, higher, stronger, a ttes hoping to be crowned the best in the world are now developing a new kind of resilience and purpose. Now at 29, ive kind of redefined my idea of what it means to be successful. You know, no longer will i let the Olympic Rings determine whether or not ive had the success that ive hoped. I think its just the day to day of enjoying what youre doing and the pursuit of it. Reporter for cbs this Morning Saturday, nancy chen, new york. Interesting. Jericka also training now for tokyo next year. Well former athlete. Still an athlete. I was saying while the piece was airing that i always wanted to cover the olympics. Ive not done that yet. You on the other hand have done it many times. Four or five games. Always the most fascinating, the intersection of culture, economics, sports, so much to talk about. Imagine working your entire life for that one moment, right, and youre weeks away, and then youre either delayed or cant do it. Tough. It is a garden party, and youre invited. The champagne industry has suffered a major hit due to covid19. As Gwen Baumgardner reports, champagne makers lost an unprecedented 2 billion in revenue over the past few months. Reporter this year has given the champagne industry a generous pour of bad luck. Celebrations are in short supply due to covid19, and sales of the sparkling beverage have fallen flat. We are experiencing a crisis that we evaluate to be even worse than the Great Depression in terms of economy for champagne. Reporter as lockdowns went in place around the world, champagne producers were left with nearly 100 million bottles of unsold product. Dont expect their price tag to drop any time soon. To stabilize the price and prevent future waste, an official Champagne Committee is expected to put a cap on next months harvest. Meaning vineyards in eastern france will have to regulate the amount of grapes they pick and burn or dispose of any excess. One wine maker likens it to pouring champagne in the gutter. A destruction of natures gift, he says, its unacceptable. Though others are taking a glass halffull approach. Champagne sometimes sounds a little bit optimistic because we have this resilience, and we have 300 years of history of getting over the various crises and finding solutions. Reporter while the impact of covid19 will bubble over for years to come, he hopes the world can find a reason to raise a glass. Gwen baumgardner, cbs news, london. Cbs this Morning Saturday will be right back. We begin this half hour with a visit to Windsor Castle just west of london. Its where Britains Queen elizabeth spends many of her private weekends. Its also home to a stunning display of flowers and trees. Starting this weekend and lasting for the next few weeks, the public will be allowed to get a rare look at the Castle Gardens and what makes them so special. Windsor castle, one of Queen Elizabeths official residences. Home to ceremonies full of pageantry and tradition. [ applause ] including the 2018 wedding of prince harry and meghan markle. Its also known for its stunning gardens, including one thats been closed to the public for decades until today. For the first time in 40 years, the queen is allowing commoners the chance to explore her beloved gardens in her back yard. Various generations of the royal family have looked i ther road, its not overlooked. So it gives a nice sense of privacy and a bit of a retreat, as well. I nice, quiet spot. Reporter the formal plantings include clipped domes of yew trees, immaculate lawns, and over 3,500 rose bushes plant t ed around a central fountain. All the result of generations of royal influence. Its a ritual created by george iv modeled by Queen Victoria and prince albert. But its in the 20th century, its current look, was very much the responsibility of the duke of veti redesigned it in 1971, laying out the design of the rose beds. Reporter the queens own alterations were only temporary. As a child during world war ii, she and sister margaret cultivated crops in their own victory garden. The garden was completely dug over in order to plant vegetables. And there were two separate plots set aside for the young princess elizabeth and her sister, the princess margaret. And they grew sweet corn and tomatoes, beans, as well, i think. All as part of the war effort, doing their bit. Reporter it may be one reason why the area remains special to her. But at the moment, shes not around to enjoy it. After her own coronavirus lockdown at windsor, the queen and Prince Philip are at their summer retreat, a moral castle in scotland, leaving nonroyals to get the royal treatment. Pretty cool, right . Very cool. And the fact that it hasnt been open in more than 40 years use would think it would have been opened and now opening during a pandemic doesnt seem necessarily easy im sure there will be preindications taken. Soda, beer, even coffee is sold in cans and tomatoes. The wines always been in a bottle or maybe a box. Now some are rethinking that premise, and sales of canned wine are soaring. Have risen 11 thanks in part to the pandemic. One area where sales have surged is canned wines. Thats right, canned wines, up 68 from last year totaling more than 188 million. Selling wine in a can, of course, breaks with tradition. But the industry is taking note. Dana jacobson found out how two very different winemakers reached the same conclusion to sell their wine in cans. Reporter the damia no s family has been making wine for 40 years. Their bindar vineyards is the oldest familyowned on long island producing up to 70,000 cases of wine each year. It wasnt until 2019 that they went from selling strictly bottles to cans. When you were a kid around the vineyard, did you ever think that you would be producing wine in a can . No. No. That was the farthest thing we were always producing wines in bottle with a cork finish. No, i didnt think cans would be this popular. Reporter pindar damianos, whose father started the business in 1979, quickly found out otherwise. Selling every single can from the winerys first batch. Theres the finished product. Reporter what was ee to tr doing a canned wine . In long island, obviously we live on an island surrounded by beautiful water. I think the cans give you that flexibility, that convenience, to take it to the beach, go on the boat, take it to the park, without having to deal with glass and a cork and an opener. Reporter although cans were new for this generations old winery, damianos didnt want to disappoint his loyal customers. The answer take their two most popular wines and sell them in smaller, more portable cans. Can you taste any difference at all . No. They were bottled the same exact, our customers say is there a different taste, and i give a taste of both. They cant see a difference between the can and the bottle. Thats the winter white in the bottle. Reporter right. It was something we wanted to test for ourselves. Then i have the can. Reporter it is still weird hearing a pop for wine, but thats okay. Its just different. I shouldnt say weird. Just different. I like that. I like that. Really refreshing. Really refreshing. Great with seafood and other foods. Same taste. Same taste. And i basically work with vineyards and growers that are in areas that are not as prevalent. Reporter across the country in northern california, the taste comparison between bottles and cans is a nonissue for wine society. After a trip to napa valley, ohio native Angela Allison and her husband austin started the company with the plan to sell wine strictly in a can. Youre the ohio girl coming in and telling wine country i want to put wine in cans and thats it, no bottles. What was that reception like . Totally not expected. And it was actually more embracing. People were excited about it. And they realized each, you know, growers in facility that have been here so long realized that there was a made it for change in the industry. Reporter using grapes from the nearby sassoon valley and some of naps top winemakers, wine society produces cans of red, white, and rose. And the industry issoci r blend gold medal at last years Tasters Guild competition and a plat spirits competition. The highest rating for a canned wine. Your wine was a canned wine going up against bottled wine. Correct. Reporter what did that mean . It definitely changed the industry and definitely changed the perception from, you know, people who are in the judging all the way to consumers. Its helped all around. Reporter and what is it about canned wine that is working . Its existed for a while but not in the amount that were seeing now. Whats working with canned wine now . So its the price, the quality, and ton is working for consumers. Its still so new. Some people dont know that great wine can come in a can. And thats what were trying to really make apparent to the world. Reporter is canned wine a gamechanger for the industry at all . Its been the most accelerated growth area in the industry for the last few years. Reporter eric asimov is chief wine critic for the new york times. It just makes a lot of sense to put wine in cans. Theyre lighter, they save money on shipping. People tell me theyre easier to recycle than glass. Reporter does having wine in a can take away from anything, the experience, anything like that . No. Because of the kind of wine youre putting in a can you wouldnt put a fancy wine or a wine thats intended to age for years in a can. I dont think you should judge wine by the container. You know, the container is just an innocent object. You know, its the people who make the wine who are in charge of the quality. Reporter people like the damianos family. I was going to get a bottle youre getting reporter who despite the pandemic continue to serve wine to their loyal but now masked customers on long island. Thank you, guys. See you later. Take care. See you next week. Reporter as for Angela Allison, when we caught up with her last week, we learned that wine society it made inroads in an unexpected place restaurants. We never thought that we would be in sort of a white tablecloth environment. But not being able to serve by the glass, it opened it up. They still wanted that experience where a customer could have, you know, something on their table. Presented for you now this morning, the ultimate taste test. Weve got the bottle here and the can. This is, tony, says the exact same wine, right. Just put in put in different places. Lets try. This is the youre doing the bottle. Im doing the bottle. Im doing the can. Very sweet. Little tart. Okay. Not bad. Its early, so, you know, bottle being official as possible. It tastes a little different. I feel like the cans a little bit sweeter. Little bit. Youre right. It is, isnt it . Wheres the . Es monds . Come on, brian. Where are the hors doeuvres . As dana notes and the times critic said, lighter, saves money on shipping, easy to recycle. Seems to make sense. And doesnt appear to taste that much different is one darker . Looks like about the same. The analyzing will continue. I see you trying to be extra before you take it just drink it. Just drink it. I was trying to be fence about it. Its 8 43 in the morning. You dont have to be fancy. Moron.
