There are thousands of nurses who will not be headed to work and instead to the picket lines. Im joined by the chapter president of seiu. You are not going into work. You decided to picket instead. Why is that . We have been bargaining with ahs for nine months and coming to them for years about really basic problems inner inside the hospital and clinics in this county. I work in the er here at Highland Hospital and i can tell you that im in the unfortunate position of having to send homeless patients and trauma patients out into the cold in the middle of the night. Paper pants and sock was no shoes because ahs fails to budget and provide weather appropriate clothing like the law requires. We have a failure to provide basic staffing and safety, not theres holes in the walls inside the er where i work. We have patients in the fairmont nursing home who are in hundred degree temperatures sometimes in the summer. Our workers hand out popsicles to try to keep them cold. The building next door has air conditioning. We have been baring for these things, homeless patient clothing air conditioning in the nursing home and ahs management has been rejecting those kind of proposals at the baring table. With owe are out here fighting for our patients because we are worry about what will continue to happen it if he dont. And the fact we are in a pandemic. How does that change things even more critical . Because while we are in there taking care of patients during this pandemic ahs has failed to provide testing for people that get exposed which mean that all of us know that we are going around spreading the virus unknowingly. We dont want to do that to our patients and each other. They have failed to provide basic safety equipment. Right now the gowns we use for patients with diseases say in big print on them, not for medical use. Thats not keeping us and the public safe. Ahs shut down coronavirus testing even though we offered to provide staffing for it during this strike. Thank you so much. We will be out here all morning bringing up the very latest on this strike and what it means for you. Reporting live in oakland.
