In the east bay, the Berkeley City Councils approved a plan to remove Police Officers from traffic duty. This makes berkeley the first city in the country to make a change like this kron fours gayle ong has more on the mayors plan to implement this new program. The new plan believed to be a first of its kind in the nation is aimed to curtail racial profiling citing the names of people who died at a routine traffic stop across the country. The plan comes as cities around the United States are looking at ways to scale back on police in the wake of the killing of george floyd we and listen to the community and the call for change. And the national to demands for transforming policing. And i really think now is the time to innovate and that we must meet this moment terror to gain says berkeley is not proposing to abolish the police we have to have police to address serious and violent crime. Kron 4 Sarah Stinson reporting live from or in county she has all the details on this era. Already one of the recommendations put out by marin county officials is to push back in classroom teachings in person teachings to september 8th, this fall. And we just got a notice from this that am high school which is where we live right now theyre also responding to the countys recommendation saying they understand that with the push back in person teachings and so theyre going to do. Theyre going to do Distance Learning starting august 19th and theyll go from there with a hybrid model which will have some small groups on campus and then some online classes as well were live here weve been talking to a lot of parents and most of them saying theyre in favor of in person teachings happening this fall and that it was very difficult doing the a Distance Learning in the spring the marin county Health Department and office of education want schools to reopen gradually due to the rising coronavirus numbers both departments have created a list of recommendations for all educational institutes, including public and private schools of all grade levels. Some of the precautions being discussed are distancing between teachers and students everyone Wearing Masks while on campus using outdoor areas for teaching Guiding Movement through hallways and use the playgrounds will be limited meals will be served in classrooms or outside no cafeterias Health Screenings plus much much more the goal is to prepare students and staff to then shalee be in school full time, but with the health of everyone in mind i talked with a parent of 2 of 2 kids here at tam high she said she would prefer in persons teachings and she says she thinks theres a lot that theyre discussing that she likes. Happy with the kids were masks, i think that makes sense the distance saying, i know theres some issues between 16 4 feet in the classroom. Luckily here at 10 we have a beautiful outdoor campus and theres tons of space im hoping they can we utilize the space outdoors so the kids can have outdoor classrooms or somehow open up the we have as you can see tons of fields and possibly they could do something with tents for coverage. Im not sure how they could work it all out but i know theyre looking into it and i would be thrilled if they could make Something Like that work. So having these discussions is really helping parents like michelle you just heard from feel good about the school resuming in person this fall, but the county, a Health Department and the office of education theyre going off of coronavirus numbers and that is will what will determine when the kids go back into the classrooms or do some kind of hybrid model well be monitoring that the discussion continues today as well as next week, theres an official announcement next from tale high officials that should come out july 27, so look forward to that for now im live in marin county Sarah Stinson kron 4 news now sara while the county schools would like to in 4 in person teaching in september. Reporting in washington, im Trevor Shirley. Last night kron 4 hosted a town hall about policing in the bay area with trust issues in George Floyds death still painfully fresh with so many people we invited several locko local Police Chiefs to join the conversation about a path forward. The chiefs of Fremont Oakland and San Jose Police discuss the outrage following floyds death. It was important that we listen it was important that we allow that anger to be expressed because people are angry and ill share with you that were angry to you know what happened with george floyd is absolutely unacceptable. Its criminal. And weve all stood with many of the people in our communities expressing that same outrage we were all pretty horrified. I what we saw on national tv with george floyd and since then i think theres outrage and a really a focus on the city of oakland theres really not. Been a focus that hasnt been on policing for quite a while 17 years of oversight has led to a lot of amazing reforms in this department we will recognize really the issues in the call for justice equality accountability weve seen incidents around the country and around the world. Were individuals and india calls are actively causing violence and hurting individuals and officers need to use force to stop an individual from hurting or killing. Others that are officers have the ability to do that short of that there is prohibited to shoot at a moving vehicle but in order to save lives or officers can do that.
